I was told today that I have to have a passport to enter Mexico. Supposedly it is a post 9/11 thing.
It looks like just another gov't money grab to me. $85 for a passport that is only good for 10 years.
The US is a free country, if you can pay for it.

Jack,
You can travel up to 26 Kilometers into Mexico with out one. At that point, you need a Visa for both yourself and your vehicle. It's a Mexican rule, not US. All I've been ever asked for when I come back across is my drivers license.

Jack, I don't know about now. I've heard it depends on how long your going to stay and how far you are going to go past the border. I had a passport when I was hunting Mexico, Baja and Sonora but not when I was fishing it, I only had a visa. It was good for 6 months and I could go anywhere I wanted at the time. If you need a passport to go to Mexico, it would kill places like Ensenada, San Felipe and many other towns just past the border. Jack, I agree with you a 100% about this is a free country, if you have the money, Good Hunting

I'm not certain about a passport being required under U.S. law, but at my Post Office, our clerks are advising people to apply for and have one to cross into either Mexico or Canada, just in case. It was my understanding that neither required one, but that by having it, you may very well avoid a snafu that would ruin an otherwise great trip. And yes, it's a post-9/11 thing.

I admit that it was before 9-11, but I couldn't get them to look at my Passport, all they wanted was a birth certificate, and this was way down in Manzanillo(sp), Colima. I don't think I paid over twenty bucks for my passport.
There are many people that travel to Ensenada with very little in the way of documents, and no visa.
But, that's the thing. Trust Mexico to cloud the issues and confuse everybody. It's best to stay away, folks.

I was in the Dominican Republic for 10 months back in 1989. When I was coming home, I showed my passport to the folks at Customs (Immigration, or whatever it was) and they tried to detain me anyway. It must be my Latino good looks or something. They asked me who the President of the USA was. I'm ashamed to say, all I could answer was, "It's either Bush or Quayle!" You don't get real good media down there. LOL

Was there a taliban back in the 70s and 80s? I was fishing Mexico back in the late 60s before I ever hunted it. We only had trucks full of beer, bait, ice, food, water, fishing gear, extra gas and alot of extra Mexican money. Never seen a raghead taliban back then and if we did, I'm sure the Mexicans would have used em for shark bait, they don't like em either.

The wife and I were trying to get into a 10 day trip down the copper canyon. All arranged through the Great Basin College Art department. Excellent price and great itinerary. We would even get some undergraduate credits for it. (about as useful as the single glove I found in the desert yesterday)
Looks like it is not going to happen unless somebody cancels, and our passports arrive early.

Jack, that's a train ride I have thought about for years; really sounds interesting, if you have a lot of time, which I never do!
If you would have told them that you had a specific date, they are willing and able to shorten the lead time, happens all the time. If you can call now and explain your plans, I don't know, but, maybe?
Both times I have applied for a passport, I was sweating it, and told them I was concerned that it might arrive too late for my travel plans. They were confident that I had nothing to worry about, and I got it with almost a week to spare, in both cases. I think they see deadlines routinely, and know how to deal with it. But, I do think it helps a lot if you make them aware of your situation.

For $60 extra they will process a passport in 3 days. That is after the center receives it. For additional cost, you can have it sent to you overnight express.
I didn't spring for the extra cost because we are unlikely to get 2 cancellations for this trip, and the passports may arrive in time anyway.
