Topic: Badgers??

I was talking with a local rancher a week or so ago. He has a big ranch up in Idaho that holds coyotes and badgers. He can tolerate the coyotes, but hates the badgers. He wouldn’t mind to see a few coyotes gone but would love to see the badger population drop dramatically. Has anyone targeted badgers, or called a few in by accident?

I've only ever called one in.Last November just before dark.I see quite a few and always call to them but they just look my direction and go about their business.I was using a Crittr Call at the time but I dont know what to reccomend.Probally a spotting scope and an accurate rifle[spot and stalk]might be a good approach.

I call one in on accident every once in awhile. Not really enough to say with any confidence that it is anything but cooincidence, but they've all come to woodpecker distress - might be the high pitch that gets 'em?
I've also targeted them on purpose a few times - spot and shoot, as was just mentioned. Fairly successful that way, in areas I know they are plentiful. Not quite the same thing as targeting a specific ranch though. Where I've done well, there's a lot of country to look at in a day.
Usually, I don't shoot them at all anymore. No real reason. I just like them I guess.

I have a cool video of Barry shooting a badger at 175 yards.
That guy can't miss a coyote running at 35 mph at out to about 200 yards; but put a badger out at about 100 yards standing still, and that boy will nearly poop his pants. (Or was that me in a nice pair of camoified overalls?!?!)
I called in a badger and shot it once using a lohmans wooden bunny distress call (the internal plastic reed one). and shot it at about 8 yards.
I also have a badger coming to the call from about 1/4 mile away to about 200 yards where dummy Danny starts talking to the camera and the badger stops over a PD hole. I shoot, and still cannot tell to this day on video if I shoot him and he falls into the hole, or if I miss low and he dives into the hole to escape. He appears too fall into the hole. But could it be that he knows gravity pulls him into the hole faster than he can dive??????

Okay, one more badger story...I have this one on video too. This badger runs across the road and into a mound and commences to dig a hole. I get my video and run to capture the action. I see the critter digging away and I am no more than 3 feet away watching him on the video, flinging dirt 14" - 20" into the air behind him. The next thing you see on the video is the badger turning around in the hole and then you see skies, dirt, sideways trees, as the camera is turning summersaults because I am fleeing for dear life with the camera in tow!!!

By the way, I want you all to know I don't talk to badgers lol. I have taken a few badgers in my life but have never called one in. The CVCA records show I have taken 20 or so badgers but I've seen alot more then that killed, most were out of Nevada and a couple were California.

Locohead, Sounds like you got him to me, but just the same I don’t blame you for not going in after him. LOL ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) I have chased a badger to a hole with a video camera before too but by the time I got there all you could see was the dirt moving as he filled the hole behind him. Your story is much better. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)
A combination spot and stalk hunt with some stands using higher pitched distress sounds with potential coyote responses as a bonus doesn’t sound too bad. Maybe even sit down overlooking the meadow like you would a prairie dog town for a while in the evening.
