Shourds Decoys? Since the newspaper business, I have had the great fortune of meeting and becoming friends with the great-grandson of Harry Venuckson Shourds, who still keeps in the family decoy heritage. Until recently, I had never heard of Shourds decoys. Then after meeting Ross, the great-grandson, I did some research on the computer. Such rich history and the stories are still told and kept alive by Harry's grandson. I even got to see up close one of the original decoys. I was just curious as to what all you know.

Hi Sherry,

What are we talking about here? Is this carved waterfowl decoys? I hear the antiques cost big bucks?

Good hunting. LB

Yes, carved duck decoys Leonard. One of his great-grandfathers decoys just sold at an auction house for $25,600.

Ross was a fascinating man to interview and write about. He has many talents and loves to talk about his heritage in the decoy business. He is currently working on an order for someone that actually wants the decoys for duck hunting.

He's so multi-talented. He talks about when the other kids wanted to go out in the fields and play, he headed for the wood shop and sat with the old men and carefully studied the art of carving setting around an old pot belly stove. He also said some of the stories that the men would tell wouldn't be gentleman of him to repeat to a lady [Big Grin]

Come to find out that his parents still live in New Jersey where the business first started but Ross just lives 9 miles away from me.

Several years ago, a friend of mine on the Eastern shore of Maryland died and the IRS appraisal on his decoys was over $500,000. He did not have all that many, but many predated WW1.

wow Jack! That was interesting facts [Smile] Sorry to hear about your friend though. Some days I just hate the reporter business and then there are times like this that I just can't seem to scoop up enough info to satisfy my hungry mind. The Shourd's date back to 1877 starting the business.
