I have, on ocassion, noticed that many of the old-timers talk about "coyote" and sometimes they are talking about ONE coyote and other times they may be referring to a multitude of them just as in the case of DEER.
Younger hunters seem to add the "S" at the end of "coyote" when talking about more than one.
e.g. Several Coyote? or Several Coyotes?
I shot 4 coyote. Or... I shot 4 coyotes.
I once ate coyote. Or... I once ate a coyote.
I suppose we could simpy resort to the Latin name of Lantris Canis Stupidicous but then I would wonder if we should add two "ii's" at the end.
The dictionary indicates that both forms are correct, but I don't really like that answer. That tells me that one or the other form of the word was mis-used enough times that it became acceptable by general consensus. There's an old analogy that applies here, I'm sure. Good observation, Jay!
I'm surprised the King Hell Dictator hasn't jumped on this issue as another reason to ban his members.....there's no "we" in team; and no "S" in coyote, period!
Good hunting. LB

I know what you mean Jay. I have to contend with one oldtimer that refers to them, in the singular and in the plural, as "they're just a mangy old dawg."

Whew! I briefly thought Higgins was referring to me until I read the word "oldtimer". Woof:p
That brings up another question. What qualifies a person as an "oldtimer" anyway? Is it age or years of calling this silly game?

An oldtimer has nothing to do with hunting. It has to do with going into Denny's and getting a senior Citizen meal. If you were born July 10th 1948 or before, you're an oldtimer lol. Hope I didn't say anything wrong? ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

Some good news for you, Danny.
You can get into the show at a discount, now. Also, McDonalds gives you free coffee, or something like that...but don't spill it in your lap when you doze off! Carls Jr. gives you a free drink with purchase of a hamburger and some other sandwiches.
Was it worth the wait?
Good hunting. LB
PS I don't think these young whippersnappers know what it's like to hunt hard?

Young whippersnapper is right Leonard. I've taken some strong, young guys out after staying up all night myself and they crap out and fall asleep. When I tell them to meet me at 4AM their eyes bug out. They are soooo tired come dark and I can't figure out why. It's not like I had them baling hay.
And... When I tell them that they will repeat the very same thing the next day, I get some of the most pityful looks.
Had one fellow ask if there were any 7-11's nearby. This after we travelled 40 miles on a rough dirt road in the middle of nowhere.

lol... when people want to go hunting with me, I give them two times, 3a.m. or 2p.m. They always opt for the 2p.m.
and to answer the question at hand, I have used it both ways. It just depends on the mood ![[Smile]](smile.gif) [ July 10, 2003, 02:51 PM: Message edited by: Crow Woman ]

Now I'm really confused. Coyote versus coyote(s)? Heretofore, when I spoke of more than one coyote, I would use the term "coyotes". Then again, when I use the term "coyote hunting", as in "Honey, can I skip our anniversary dinner so I can go coyote hunting?", I (as you can see) use the term "coyote" - in the singular. But, do I mean one coyote or more than one coyote? Like,... when I go coyote hunting, am I inferring that I'm only after one coyote, and is it one coyote in particular, or am I after all coyote(s) and I'm not picky? Would I be more accurate to say "Honey, I know the contractions are only two minutes apart, but the guys wanna go coyotes hunting." Sounds kinda silly, but a guy cannot go around being grammatically inaccurate. Makes you look ignorant and insensitive to the eloquently oriented guys at hunting camp. Damn! Now won't be able to sleep all night.

Jay,
Just name the time. I'll be up and ready. I may fall asleep on the ride, but riding in a car has always done that to me. When the music starts, don't worry, I'll be ready.
Crow woman, I know the feeling. I was one of the most requested guides for a hunt last winter, I walked in one night and announced I wanted to try a new area in the morning, and said we would need to leave by 4 AM.
Lost my "most requested guide" status real quick!

Jay, that was too easy! You smoked him out, and named no names. I think the 7-11 comment is what did it.
"Just name the time, Bucko"
Listen closely: (figuratively speaking)
A)"We killed three coyote, yesterday."
B)"We called three coyotes, but two coyotes got away."
Noncoyotes hunters will invariably argue that B is more correct; but predator hunters seldom talk that way....and who are we trying to impress? Not to mention; they don't even care!
Good hunting. LB

This plural thing with animals is confusing. Just look at the names of some of the critters that I hunt/trap. These names are both singular and plural:
Lynx Fox Sheep Deer Caribou Goat Bear (though bears is used by some?) Marten Beaver Moose Musk Ox Elk Ptarmigan Quail
But the funny thing is that wolf can be plural as wolves but also as wolf! What gives?? Coyote has my vote over coyotes even though duck or ducks seems to be interchangeable the same way. Our language is a strange one at times.
Man I'd better get out in the bush as I'm starting to get serious here! Thanx Jay!!

I think I'll just drop the "s" from now on because while I'm including it, I could be hunting. I guess that over my lifetime, all those "s"'s would add up to one or two whole stands that I would otherwise miss out on.

Hey, wait a minute. I'm onecoyote, now I'm totally lost lol. Leonard, I'm happy I can say I made it. Was the wait worth it? Hell yeah it was, look at the fun we had getting here. Hard hunting? We never hunted hard. Drive 1400 miles, hunt all day and night, no sleep, no food. That was easy lol.

Dice singular is die.
Maybe one moose could become "moo".
Just so not to be confused with what the waitress writes when she can't spell "milk". Brad

Brad, dice singular is actually douse. Think about it. Moose plural, by the same logic, would be meese.

I thought douse was another word for drench.
You know what, show'em my video, if they decide I need the medication, I'll split with Leonard.

One coyote is a coyote, more than one is coyotes. Also when I look up the word "ugly" in dictionary it says "see Jay Nistetter". Hee hee

Rich. That's funny coming from a man with one glass eye and cataracts in the other. I was talking to a plastic surgeon friend and showed him a photo of your ears. He made some comment about satelite dishes and immediately cancelled his cable service.ROTFLMAO!
