There was a guy deer hunting with us one time who had on one of those blaze orange snowsuits that you unzipped down the front. He unzipped it,squatted and crapped in his hood, then stood up and put his hood back on.He hadn't lived it down yet, people still call him poophead [to put it nicely].

I tried to let loose a nice dry one once but it came out a bit on the wet side. I had to strip the overalls off, clean-up with snow, and free-ball it for the rest of the day!
EEEEW!!!!! We did kill 2 coyotes and a badger that day. Almost a terd, ERRR, I mean a third!

The funniest thing about coyote hunting is that there is a group of people who (I'm not kidding now) think the .17rem is too small to hunt coyotes with. HA HA HA HA.

Dang-nab-it,it's on now ain't it boys ?
I for one don't have the experince to compare caliber efrectiveness on coyotes, but I intend to buy a 17Rem barrel and remedy that situation at some point.
What I was thinking of when I posted this, was maybe a yote hunter falling asleep, and a yote biting him in th **s or something like that ?

I read where a guy took his buddy calling and a coyote ran up behind him and bit his ponytail. I took my younger brother night calling, a fox came in but stayed well out of shotgun range. We were right inside a field gate about 400yds.from my grandparents house.I eased out onto the road staying low then ran over the hill to the house to get my 6mm.My granny wanting to know what hurry is,and I'm gonna bust my heart running like that..Get my gun and couple of shells head out fast hearing you better be careful[I was 19yrs.old and smarter than everybody].Ran that big heavy barrel back, loaded a round, and my younger bro.insist that he get to shoot. He won't hold the light the way I'm whispering to him.I guess the little ruckus in the fencerow convinced the fox there really was a rabbit being killed. So he runs in to about 40ft.that makes for a hard shot when-- your light man is mad--you just ran 1/2 mi.and your heart is about to "bust"--with a 12lb. rifle/10x scope. As my Papa told me whenever I missed, you made the fur fly but the meat went with it.. HAH! He soiled his hood and put it on? Now that's funny.
The best one I can come up with is my friend and I were hunting deer and he had to take a #2 so he went over this hill to go and he never came back. I came in about lunch time and I said "well what happened? Did you cut tracks and follow for a while or what?" (because it had actually snowed on opening day of shotgun season. very rare) He says "Nope, I squatted down to sh*t and forgot I had lowered my COVERALLS and took a nice dump right in the middle of my coveys." On the inside mind you. I had a good laugh over that. I don't have any about predator calling, but I'm sure the coyotes around here have some funny stories about me trying to call them in .."...And then the guy lets out this godawful howl that sounds like my aunt pearls tea kettle going off! I just had to roll around and laugh. What a maroon." lol

About two years ago I was out calling in the sand dunes using a JS 512 with a super bird tape. I immediately had a yote come in,,,,hard. Couldn't get the volume turned down ,, had the machine sitting away from me a little. Anyway this yote came so fast I lost him in the scope, looked down the barrel and he was maybe 6' away. Just pointed the gun and ....MISSED !!!!!! Missed the next several shots too at him !!!!! He had me so rattled I just sat there and died out laughing. That ended my ET calling and broke out the Tally Ho. Haven't looked back since. Much more control over the calling and the animal. That one evening taught me a bunch. I was wondering about that myself. My 223 bushmaster varminter weighs about 9.5 pounds, guessing at it,with the mildot scope and 27 inch harris bipods [ see how bad I need them shooting sticks,P220 ]. That's a lot of weight. In addition If I have to hoof the e-caller a mile back in there,we're talking another 10 or 12 pounds. I was thinking I'd be better off just carrying all my hand calls,I've got about 12 different ones and a slydog howler, think that'd be enough ? Mostly cottontail calls, one fawn bleater,3 mouse squeakers [sceery special coaxer and a couple of others].
I've read you should change up calls, so they don't get used to one sound ? I thought that applied to each stand only. In my area, since it's so thick,I'll probably only move 2 or 300 yards between stands. Should I then change calls,or keep using what I was using ?

Seldom Ever how is that new howler? Have you got a handle on that Primos? I have started to keep a log of my stands. I write down the date, time, temp, wind speed and direction, setup, what calls used, success. I also have draw a crude little map that way depending on the wind can I hunt that stand and where do I setup at for that wind direction. It keeps me from wasteing time by going to the stand and haveing the wind all wrong. By watching the weather chanel or logging on to the net to get weather info. I also write any thing about that setup I would change if and when I hunt that stand again.

Hey Manieac, you know I never did get the hang of that open reed thing ? I blew till I ruptured one of my lips and the other one was threatening to go AWOL on me, so I quit trying .Now the slydog closed reed howler is a whole different ballgame, I made the right sound with it the first time I used it! I really like it,and I'm trying to find a way to get me one of those Higgins howlers as well!
I've been thinking about that log book stuff myself,I believe I'll be doing it too.Fortunately,up North where I hunt in fall, there are literally dozens and dozens of clearcuts to hunt/call the edges of,in case the winds not right.

Sounds like a clarification is in order. It should not be necessary to change sounds or calls when moving from one stand to the next.
That seems more like advice for calling those areas that have been pressured before, where a slightly different sound might make the difference.
Another reason to change sounds is if the animal hangs up, and needs coaxing.
I'm a firm believer in certain sounds, and may use them for all day without changing anything.
When things slow down is the time for solutions.
Good hunting. LB

SE, I travel light. I carry two calls, a TH and Tweety. I have my sticks nestled inside my soft seat and a rifle. Sneak in quiet, call em, kill em.I don't like bulky camo like some. Dull colors that kind of blend in work great. Too many stickers and stuff around here for one of those Ghilly suits.

Well, you've just about got me talked out of using the ghillie suit anyway,it's a bit heavy to be toting for long, even in a turkey vest .
And I will definitely only use the e-caller at places that are fairly easy to get to for setup. I guess up North I'll be traveling light myself.

SE don't give up on that ghillie so soon. They are a good tool to have there are definate time when they are benificial. Just like many of the things in my tricky bag, just cause I have it doesn't mean that I use all of it on every stand.
In the area that I live in if it ain't farmed it's wooded. Where it's wooded dang it's thick. In the potatoe fields (this time of year) a basketball sized rock is awsome cover. I have a couple farms that I hunt that the woods surrounding are just too thick to hunt in and my best vantage and shooting spot are in the field calling into the woods. Right now the farmers are just now getting to the fields. Most have them plowed. Here in the rolling hills, not very many breaks, terrace rows, ditches, or other cover in the fields. It seems it's to open or to thick. That ghillie is awsome.
And when ole fat boy can plop down on that hill and be a bush. And start makeing those the John Deere just ran over my foot, snowshoe hare, come over here and eat me Mr. Coyote blues. I can be a good day.

Yeah,I'll use it around home probably, but hiking in with it up north,it might get a bit heavy ? I don't wear it till I get on stand. It's full body in mossy oak.If you're laying down or sitting up in the woods, you just kinda blend in and disappear. Usually I just roll it up and tuck it into my vest game bag.

To carry mine I use my military issued sleeping bag cinch. It is a peice of cordura about 12in X 12in with straps on two of the sides. It has d-ring in several spots and connectors for a alice pack. You know when you roll up a sleeping bag it has those two strings to tie it up, something like that.

I like it because it gives me support for my back for offhand shooting.I'll bet it will be even nicer when used with shooting sticks or bipods.I can just lean back and take it easy.Just got to be careful about falling asleep. [ May 18, 2003, 06:34 AM: Message edited by: Seldom Ever ]
