How old were your kids when you:
1. first took them out? 2. first let them shoot? 3. when they first carried a gun and actually hunted?

I had 2 girls and 1 boy. Oldest Girl don't hunt.
1. As soon as they wanted to go.
2. Started mine off on BB guns at 6 years old
3. In Idaho they have to be 10 to hunt small game and 12 to hunt big game.
But if it were up to me; just as soon as its leagle to let them hunt with ME at all times till they can be trusted and are responcible.
Thats just my thoughts on it. Slydog

Mine didn't really show an interest until last year when he was 13 and killed his 1st deer. He had (I've got it now) a BB gun until he shot it through my window into the neighbors. He was 9 or 10 when he pulled that stunt. After I whooped his ass I took him next door and with tears and all made him apologize.

I got my 5 year old daughter a low power bb gun this last chistmas. I've also let her shoot my .22 a few times. I think she get's more of a kick just doing something with me than from what she is actually doing. She is still a little immature in her approach to shooting, so it is only under heavy supervision, and she knows if a rule gets broken, the gun gets put up. I think she can unload my .22 semi faster than I can. It's easy, just don't aim at anything. She hasn't shot it since.

I believe that a youngster’s curiosity needs to be satisfied early. The sooner they realize the damage that can be done by a firearm the better. I’m not saying hand a fully loaded firearm to a 4 year old and say tear it up. But maybe allow them to pull the trigger while you steady and control the muzzle. In my opinion if you can change curiosity to respect at a young age the child will be less likely to be involved in an unsupervised accident, regardless of whose home they are in.
Now I’m not a father and have not put this opinion to practice. My nephew’s parents do not necessarily share my opinion. I must respect that. When my nephews express a desire to go hunting I will take them, with their parents permission, at whatever age they are when the desire is expressed. I won’t go too far from home though.
After they have passed hunters safety and can legally hunt, I think it is twelve years old in Utah. They will be invited to go with me.
