Gerry Blair was the first name that came to mind. Since he retired I've really missed his articles.

I've always like Bill Austin's articles a lot too. Slim Pedersen, Craig O'Gorman and Vern Howey write things I enjoy also.

You know what? I wasnt even thinking about predator hunting or trapping guys when I started the thread.I kinda had gun writers on my mind.I was just thinking about an article Bob Milek wrote years ago and thought Id throw the question out there, but yes I would include Gerry Blair and Craig O gorman in my stable as well, and go ahead and put Ross Seyfried and Craig Boddington in there too on the gun writer/hunter side.

First on the list would be Jack O'Conner. John Wooters a very close second. Gun writers today just dont have the punch that these guys had. Too much advertizing this and advertizing that, gets in their way today. These guys could tell a story as well as knew what they were talking about. All they ever pushed was hunting and maybe Jack pushed the 270 Win and John the 308 a little!

The Burnham Bros used to write very good calling articles. A.L. Lindsey could too. Russel Tinsley was also a very good writer. Major Boddicker still writes some very good calling articles.

Fred Bear and Howard Hill could write archery stories like no other.

As far as trapping writers, Charles Dobbins, Craig O'Gorman, Johnny Thorpe, Vernon Hopkins, Herb Lenon, Raymond Thompson, and the all time greatest was the great Bill Nelson. No one could paint a picture in your mind like Bill could. All of these men I have been very fortunate to either have taken personal instruction from or had personal correspondance with. I believe Herb Lenon was the only one I didnt. I wish I had though. Got to spend a week in the Adirondack Mtns with Johnny Thorpe. What an experience! Bill Nelson gave me my first trapping instructions. Dr. Robert Wendt used to write artilces in Fur-Fish-Game in the 60's that were very good as well. I have taken instruction from him and also had the good fortune to trap with him on several occassions and in a couple of different states. We both started trapping for a living in the same year. I moved to AZ and started my calling business after the fur boom and Doc still traps for a living to this day.

Elmer Keith, Fred Bear, and Russell Annabel were outstanding writers and my personal favorites. I gotta agree w/ Steve that the commercialism surrounding the hunting magazine industry has really led to a decline in the overall quality of writing found. Boddington and Towsley write some pretty good stuff. As far as trapping: Dobbins, Butcher, Dailey, Thorpe, and Noonan are all great reads.

The guy I've been enjoying the last few years is Wayne van Zwoll. Also John Barsness, Keith McCafferty and a guy I can't find writing for the last several years G. Sinton. Plus all the others big names you all have mentiond.

Of all time, well Capstick is the best storyteller. He could make you set on the edge of your seat while writing about golf or knitting. LOL My favorite is Robert Ruark. His descriptive writings will put you in Africa or behind his dogs or anywhere he wanted for that mater. He was a true linguist. Today I am not sure who is top dog. I enjoy most all of the writers of the “Sporting Classics” magazine. Ron Spomer is very well written and would probably be my favorite. Steve is right. The modern trend in writing is pushing products. I don’t mind product reviews as long as they “are” product reviews. It is the general articles that try to push products that annoy me. I get a real kick out of the “posed” pictures where the guy is standing head to toe in brand X garb with the logo stamped all over him looking off into the sunset with a shiny new varmint rifle in tote and a couple of dead critters at his feet. The moral of the story is always that if it were not for the fantastic camo, the deadly accuracy of the new rifle and the outstanding performance of the latest ammo the hunt would have been a failure. In one particular magazine the whole story is basically told in one flashy picture. LOL Oh well if they are selling them then “mission accomplished” I guess.

Good hunting.

Q,
