Well my hunting partner, his son and I went out for squirrel, rabbit, crow and an unlucky Yote (if one were to appear) today. Had a weather front come in dropping rain mixed with snow and cold temps on us. We saw exactly ZERO squirrels, ZERO rabbits, ZERO coyotes, lots of Crows but none within range.
We did however see a Bald Eagle (pretty closely too), many many Hawks and Kestrels, and quite a few deer including one 6 point buck...I figured antlers would pretty well be shed by now, but so much for that idea LOL. Lots of ducks and geese, some within range had season been open, and a couple of Cock Pheasant one which had been chewed by a coyote...if only that season was still open I'd have some Pheasant Chili tonight!!! Lots of tracks around, several Coon tracks, more coyote than I can count, and a fair number of fox as well.
All in all it was a great outing, even if I don't bring game home it is always wonderful to get out into the woods. Next time I need to take my camera....would have had some great shots, especially of that Eagle...what an awesome bird.

I went calling for cats this weekenbd. I've never even seen one of those critters (bobcats) in the wild. I suceeded in howling in 3 coyotes that hung up about 1/4 - 1/2 mile away!?!? I was armed with only a SONY!

Man it was 15 below Friday.They say to layer but I dont have that many.Loco I put an add in the paper for bobcats but no-one has called yet.We dont have much time left.

Wow, you guys have my sympathy. It's been a few years since I puttered around Aurora and Raton, but I would think they still have bobcat in the area.
Predator Paul lives in Colorado, and he gets a few every year, even though it apparently requires stands of two hours?
One thing for sure, you have to learn to recognize bobcat habitat. After that, it's all gravy. ![[Smile]](smile.gif)

Early December a friend and I were hunting this little 5 acre wooded plot. We were walking through some knee high brushy tangle with about 20 feet between us when I heard "OH S--T!!!" As I looked over I saw a bobcat (not small either) running in front of him and it rapidly shot down a small gulley. I ran (or tried to) over to him as he stood there shaking, and he told me that he damn near stepped on it. ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)
This brush was pretty thick in this area so it's no surprise the cat went unnoticed, but I'm really surprised it didn't jet off sooner. I saw a glimpse of it about 30 minutes later, just a grey shadow hauling some serious butt off into some CRP grass.
Talk about a leemer,

, the wife thinks were going to buy a new (small) house in a real nice hood.I dont think I quite fit in.All I kept visualizing was a place to skin my critters. Im sure my new neighbors will find me quite intresting. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Jeepers, Shaggy, I went out Sunday morning, too! Was field testing (that's my code for hunting nowadays) a couple new designs of mine for calls. Called, and called, and called. My partner was up all night so he lasted about two setups and wanted to go back to bed. Long about 11 a.m., I was two sets into a setup when a nice 'cat popped up at about eighty yards. Haven't had a chance to point that new 25 ought-6 at anything but paper, so I thought 80 yards might be a low-trauma shot. As soon as I get the crosshairs between those little black marks on his forehead, he drops out of sight and I see ears moving along a terrace from left to right. He pops back up at about 60 yards and gives me the bad-eye. Same thing -get the crosshairs on him and he dives. Ears from left to right and up he comes. Just starting to squeeze the trigger and he dives into the sandplums that connect where he is with where I am. Had he appeared again, he'd have been at about twenty feet or less - much too close for the rifle without vaporizing the poor booger, so I just mark the new calls up as good to go and call it a day. Haven't seen many critters around here for weeks. Spring's a-comin'!

Patience, grasshopper. Got my dad working feverishly at the lathe as we speak. He's having a good time doing this since he's retired for medical reasons and just loves working with his hands. He did turn a couple out for me from tulip wood, which I had never heard of. They're very pretty! When I got enough done to offer, I'll let you guys know.
