Well, next month starts the bobcat season over in the neighboring state of Pennsyltucky. Being that I have a bobcat permit, I kinda figured I would give it a try.

So...which would be the best Foxpro sounds for calling bobcats? I have an older FP Scorpion (not the newest version with bangfox, or foxbang). I will be calling mostly at night, if that makes a difference.

Also, do I let the call run continuously for cats?

I would use bird or rodent, or kitten meows and continuous gets my vote.

Run the Call contiuosly cats stop when the call stops. I have had excellent luck with wt cottontail. (edit to add) I have never called at night.

While I have plenty of bird sounds and other little creatures, I've called more cats in with JS Grown Cottontail but the 2 I called up this fall came to FP snowshoe #3, it's beginning to be my favorite.

Call continuously.

Leonard, I have a lot of bird sounds on this machine...various turkey sounds including distress, dying crow, game bird dist, pheasant dist, male cardinal, screaming jay, woodpecker, robin, lucky bird, finch, etc. Are there any standouts in your experience?

Tom, I have #030 adult cottontail. Is this the sound you refer to by JS grown cottontail? Is that Johnny Stewart? Also, I see a snowshoe HP and a snowshoe #1 on here, but no #3.

Paul, I don't see a "wt" cottontail? Though I do have others...baybee, Cal's, DSG, cotontail #1, adult cotton, and screamin rabbit.

JS= Johnny Stewart, #102A, buy the cd and load it on your caller along with canine pups #107A.

Fox Pro sound snowshoe #3 on my caller, I have 12&3 but am pretty sure it's #3 that is my favorite. I like FP's adult cottontail too.

Anyway a good cottontail sound has produced more cats for me than any bird sounds.

49 - the FP adult cottontail will work good. I like the bay bee cottontail better.

Cranky cardinal worked well last year for me on both coyotes and cats. Thats what I called these two with.

Good Luck and stay after them

Thanks a bunch..

How loud am I going to crank up the volume? The speaker on the scorpion is small, though I do have an external I can hook up. I will be hunting in deep woods.

Kelly...nice cats.

I have talked about this before, but for purposes of illustrating what a cat will come to....

Back in the old days, we used an 8 track tape deck. These things always had problems, the tape would get wound too tight and lock up or break, but on this occasion, it would engage the capstan, it would go "errk" and then nothing. After many trials, we were no closer to finding the problem, but there had been 15 or 20 intermittent "errks" over probably 15 minutes, or so?

Well, this was at night and we were parked on the side of a road in lonely Nevada when I got that sixth sense feeling and had to stop right then and swing the light around. There, in the middle of the blacktop not over 50 yards away, was a full size bobcat very interested in what we were doing.

Of course, this created a Chinese Fire Drill situation, and I'm not going to lie to you....the cat got away, but those "errks" had called him in and who knows how long he was standing there waiting to get shot?

The point is, there isn't a sound that has not called a cat. However, if you hunt at night, and have observed cats that hang up in places that you wouldn't see them, in daytime, then you know that damned near anything will get their attention, but.

It is: what will get a hung up bobcat to move, that I am talking about, and that is.......after you try everything else, including juicy lipsqueaks; rodent squeals.

The last desperate attempt at getting a cat into position for a shot, is now and forever will be, RODENT SQUEALS. Just remember where you heard it.

Another thing. I have been hunting in a pouring rain and called bobcat using kitten mews. This, to me is a very powerful and useful knowledge. When everybody should be trying to get dry someplace dry, but stupid contest hunters are still plugging away, kitten mews have been known to work when nothing else would.

Now, you can call bobcats with cottontail sounds and jackrabbit sounds when conditions are good, but remember these go to sounds for difficult situations, and you will thank me. This is the kind of information that nobody shares, but you get it here, and you get it free.

Received Leonard..

The closest thing I have to kitten mews are kitten distress 2. The rodent squeals I have.

Thanks.

We called in an otter one day while hunting a contest in the pouring down rain. It hopped out of the creek and made it's way over to the fox pro (in it's zip lock bag) took a look and hopped back into the creek.

Knew it was a bad day for calling after that.

Had to reset my presets today and sure enough snowshoe #3 it is. I also listened to adult cottontail and it'll get alot of play.

LB, ya'll ever use your marking lazer (see I pay attention) to coax a cat out?

Dying crow has always work well with cats for me. I have used that sound at lot. Once had a large tom that I saw over a mile away. The cat was running down this long straight dirt road, pick up the movement as he came over a small rise, he would stop every once in a while, but keep coming. I thought it was a coyote for the longest time. Shot that cat at 10 to 15 yards still on a dead run to the call.

The same crow sound called in a triple of cats to one stand. I have never had that results again. But three cats came to the call, 2 from the same canyon, one male and female, and another male from the open area from the opposite direction. Also what interesting I shoot all three on top of each other. Shot the first one, the second and third got the first cat scent and stop going to the call and circle to the first cat. The two cats were shot as the were smelling the first cat ass. Always wonder what they were thinking at the end.

Interesting post, Tom. Interesting because I would never of thought of using dying crow, in the first place? Might even try it.

My son has called bobcats with a home recorded house cat sound, sort of a meowling that sounds like it has some distress to it.

Good info on the mewling kittens and rodent squeeks. Thanks.

The new FoxPro Cagie Cottontail and Lil's Cottontail do the trick for kitty cats. Fox don't seem to mind the sound either.

The biggest one in the batch was right at 34lbs. They're pretty long, but skinny guys with big feet. Got the big one in the front and small female in the back on the same stand. Fun times.

Kelly & T.Wookie, you guys are giving the pussy cats pure hell. Great pictures!

Those darned lynx are sure built for that climate with the long legs and big feet. Wow, what a beautiful pile of fur. Good $$$$$, I'll bet.

Kelly, did you shoot that one cat right in the nose or mouth? Fine shot wherever, and great calling. You are truly Cat Daddy Cold.

Those are excellent photos, guys!

Nick, of those sounds mentioned for cats, turkey distress, Shoeshoe HP and nutty nuthatch have worked pretty good for me here on coyotes, too. And I've called in a few greys on the New Cagie cottontail before their season opened...

And I've learned to not use too much volume in the woods! Start low & ramp it up until you just can barely hear the full range of the sound & let it play. I'm 1/2 deaf, so I get th volume set to where I can just barely hear anything at all... [Smile]

Hope ya get a cat!

Thanks for the volume tip, Fred.

For lynx, I play it LOUD and non-stop. If they decide to sit down or stop coming, I find a really busy sound and let it play. One that's worked good for getting a stopped cat to move again has been FoxPro's Lucky Bird. Something about the up and down pitches in that sound really get a lynx moving if they get bored with the rabbit. I've had lynx walk right up to the CS-24 playing on volume level 32 before and look at the thing, waiting for that rabbit to come out for the chase.

Leonard,
Do you have a recording of that "ERK" sound you mentioned? You know, the one that called that bobcat out into the middle of the road.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on December 11, 2011, 09:28 AM:

No, but I could hum a few bars for you. (not really) Don't even know what it was except it was an 8 track cassette.

gh....lb

edit: imagine a 33⅓ record player, turned on so the speakers work but you put your hand on it so that it doesn't turn. Then, move it an inch or so, and pause, and then another inch or so, etc. What you will hear is an "ERK" and it doesn't much matter what the song is about; Blue Suede Shoes, or Cottontail Blues.

Leonard,
Is this close? http://www.cronkpredatorcalls.com/sounds/ERKARK.mp3

Kinda, sorta, but lower pitched and much less frequently, like 30 second pauses between ERK's.

What you have there sounds a little like the Budweiser frogs. But, I have no doubt the sound would call a bobcat. And, that was sort of my point, that almost any sound can call a bobcat, some better than others.

Seems like I remember Danny writing about calling a coyote with a Hank Williams CD or some other CW singer? And, I don't think he wasn't exaggerating. Like they say in Texas, you can call a coyote with squeaky brakes.

That's why it amuses me somewhat, that 49 wants specific sounds programed into his caller. Just about any bird sound will work. Just about any rodent squeal would work. And just about any cottontail sound would work, real low volume or blasting it. This stuff ain't rocket science.

gh....lb

edit: make that at least one minute pauses between ERK's

I don't have much experience in cat calling, but I understand that they prefer "busy" sounds. My first bobcat was called with a Burnham cottontail duet. I was hunting with Murry Burnham at the time.

I have not inquired as to what they prefer, might do that sometime?

Who's Murray Burnham? Ya know, sometimes this shit don't work.
