Mountain Lion Killed After Dining On Pet Goats

June 9, 2005

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Conservation officers with the state Department of Game and Fish killed a mountain lion Wednesday in the mountains east of Albuquerque.

They said the animal had visited a couple's home three nights in a row and killed four pet goats.

Northwest Area Game Manager Ross Morgan said the department has killed four mountain lions east of Albuquerque in the past 18 months. All four cats were returning to residential areas, where they were preying on pets.

If people encounter a mountain lion, wildlife experts say to immediately pick up all children and tell them to keep calm, stand tall and try to appear as large as possible while backing away slowly.

Never turn your back to the lion or run, as it may trigger the lion's instinct to chase.

And it's not just the East Mountains officials are warning about.

In Colfax County, the Raton Range reported Thursday that a mountain lion has been spotted in the Raton area as well.

Last week, a city worker spotted a lion in a ditch between Rio Grande and Cook avenues.

Sounds like the Lion population is growing there...Do they have a hunting season on them?...I just completed my first lion call a few days ago...Sounds like a good place to put it at a test.

Yes you can hunt lions in NM, I believe the only western state you can't hunt them in is California. The lions are not the problem and never have been. The same thing is going on throughout much of the west.
The problem is PEOPLE moving into lion country and putting there pets in the food chain. Most of these people are from citys and have no clue about the outdoors except for what they see in a Disney movie.
The news media don't help matters either when it comes to the animals. Somehow bad things usually happen when channel 2/4 or 7 get a hold of the story.
Examples.... (a yearling 200 lb black bear cub was spotted out side the city limits) duh. Or a 70 lb bobcat was treed next to the city hall lol. It's funny but it's true. [Frown]

Show me a 200 lb. yearling black bear, or a 70 lb. bobcat, and I'll show you one of my columns.

How true! In the "old" days a hungry Mt. Lion would come down from the hills to feed on deer and small game, if there was no food in the lowlands the Mt. Lion moved on or starved.
With the abundance of Scruffy and Spot in the lowlands there will always be food in the lowlands.
Predators, as we know, are adaptable and if there is food available they will not starve.
