I got out of San Antonio this weekend and headed up to a friend's 5,000 acre ranch near Robert Lee. My calling partner, Jay Travis and I went calling for bobcats Monday. We called in three and took two, all between 1:00 and 3:30 PM. According to the "experts" you can't call cats during the day. Jay got a great 27lb. tom and I got a very nice 17lb. female. The third one never gave us a clear shot. The interesting thing is that the two we took were totally different color phases. Jay's was an "orange" and mine was a "brown". They were taken on different ranches, but only about 15 miles apart. We have called in eight bobcats in the past several weeks around the Robert Lee/Water Valley area. Life is good.

What “expert” ever said that you couldn’t call bobcats in during the day? Statistically you will do better at night if you are in cat country but I don’t think I have ever heard anyone ever say that it couldn’t be done. Every bobcat I have ever called with the exception of one was during the day. Because of our low bobcat populations they were just incidentals while coyote calling. All of the top guns that I know of work the night shift when they are serious about taking cats.

To expand a little on your comment about experts, and Quinton's difference of opinion, I really think I know what you mean. But, of course, it's completely possible to call cats in the daytime. It helps to have cats in the vicinity, if they are around, they will come. Don't know if you had long stands or not, but that's about the only difference, it seems to me? At night, they seem to come in a little more directly.
I agree with Quinton, the number of coyotes in the area will have something to do with your success on bobcat in the daytime. And, as a matter of fact, I've killed just as many cats in the middle of the day as opposed to early or late.
There is no doubt that cat hunting is far more productive at night, maybe that's why you have heard that it can't be done on the dayshift?

Leonard...I agree with you. A lot of folks say you can only call cats at sunup, sundown, or at night. I too have had excellent luck during the middle of the day. I don't target cats unless I am in good cat country. I always plan on a 30 minute stand. Somtimes they come right in, sometimes they stalk their way in, and sometimes they slink in and have a seat for a while. They are fun critters to call.

All my cats are called between sunup and sundown.In my state we cannot call cats at night.The best time for me is just after sunup or just before sundown.Noon will be productive if cats are in the area.Our cat season starts in Nov and ends in Feb.
Whats the largest cat you have called in TX?

I haven't killed very many cats in Texas, but they were all fair sized animals, I'd guess between 24 and 28 pounds?

The largest I have called in here is 33lbs., followed by 27, 25, and 24lbs. Randy Watson up in Midland has called in one that ran 38lbs. He may have called a bigger one that I am unaware of.

Nice going Bob !!! Like to know who keeps putting all these myths about cats are only nite time critters. My last four were well in to the daylight hours. Kind of shocked me when they showed up. Which way out of RL you hunting?? I do a little bit down that way south on the SA hwy near the Meta Peak Ranch.

Bob,
I have been hunting near Edith and Water Valley for the most part. We also call a smaller ranch just outside of Robert Lee and an 18,000 acre ranch just outside San Angelo on HWY 208.

Your weights on the bobcats are right on. I have been using my Brass Rhino and WT Caller with the Flemming Hare and Cottontail Distress sounds.

Bob 30.6 is my largest cat.Most toms will top out at about 26lbs.I have read of 40 lb cats in TN.

I did mount the cat.My wife is ok with everything except snakes.A diamond back or timber rattler would look great on my mantle.
Is anyone else forbidden from mounting anything?

Leonard, my favorite call is a Tally Ho. I've called in my cats with it more than any other. But I use it the most too. I've been using the Tweety more lately. Got my last cat up with it. Way I see it, if a cat is around he will come in to about any call. Most folks don't sit on a stand long enough to get a cat. But, I've had two come within 5 minutes from the time I called to the shot. All with a Tally Ho. Calls are like guns, depends on what I pick up and go with and make it work. These are two 30+ lb cats called in with the Tally Ho and each in very much daylight.

But seriously. I agree with you. The sound of any call is generally overrated. It's like fishing lures, they mostly appeal to fishermen. I use whatever is in my pocket. I have favorites, shape's important, but you can call a cat with a wide range of sounds. The main thing is to have a changeable sound if you need it, and that is seldom. But, a backup is nice to have, without walking back to the truck. ![[Frown]](frown.gif)

I carry two calls in the pocket, TH and Tweety. I like their size (small) and tone range (huge).Once I see a cat comeing in the calls stay silent and start lip squeeking. So far so good.
