Made ya look!
No, I haven't bought it yet, but when I do, I need solid advice from you fellas that are using a seventeen on coyotes. Standard 3X9? Seriously.
Good hunting. LB

Hi Leonard
I have a straight six Leopold on mine I feel that it works real well. With a Seventeen you can get away with (need) more magnification than say with a bigger cal. as you probably shouldn't be taking any shots at running coyotes. With a seventeen if you don't hit them in the chest you probably won't be picking them up. If you are into variable I would start with 6 on the bottom end.

Nice to hear from you, Albert! I heard that you finally got a lynx! Lucky you! No wolves, this year?
I had a straight six Leupold, once. I loved that scope. Stolen.
You should check out the thread above; in firearms: 17 for coyotes. Seems to me that you quit using your 17 Remington because it was ripping hides too much? Something like that?
Good hunting. LB

Considering the effective range of the .17 all you will need is a front sight and a pair of bifocals. LOL HE HE He he he.
Good hunting.

Hello Leonard,
I hardly qualify responding to your question but I do have for the last year a 17 Remingtion which I got primaraly for bobcat, fox and coyote, in that order. When I got the 17 I set it up with a 3-9x B&L. For me hunting in Southern Arizona I don't need or want any of the variables ending with 12, 18 or 24 power for a predator rifle. In fact, a lower power of 2 wouldn't be bad. I just can't bring myself to go with a 1-4x 1-6x. I expect most shots for bobcat and fox will be relatively close. My primary coyote rifle is a 22-250, M77 with a 3-9 Leupold which I'm comfortable with.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, "Lucky" Bill. I remember having a pleasant conversation with you, one afternoon in Globe, where you proudly showed me your custom ladder for hunting predators.
You mention a fact that sometimes gets overlooked, when discussing gear; be it calibers, or optics. Where you will hunt, and those conditions you see, will have a bearing on a properly set up rifle.
I think some people have the wrong concept during these discussions. We are mostly interested in conducting a poll as to what various and sundry members think . We are not, (necessarily) reaching consensus, and announcing the results.
I just find it interesting to know what others think, and sometimes I'm able to apply what I learn. If someone wants to know how I do it, or what I use; I'm happy to accommodate.
I also agree with your reluctance in buying scopes that start with a "1". Somehow, it doesn't seem like I'm getting my money's worth?
Good hunting. LB

I belong to the school of Leupolds and then there is others!! I like 3x9, but currently shoot a 3.5 x 10 Leupold. I like varibles, low end for calling/hunting and a high end to work up reloads. I know its not a 17- but just picked up a Rem 788 with light Douglas 6 x 47 barrel, waiting on dies and supplies now. Think of it as a big 17! I agree with you, Richard. That 3.5X10 Leupold is about the most useful all around scope for western hunting; period. Your 788 is a damn fine coyote gun, although I have never used that chambering.
Good hunting. LB

Leonard,
Thanks for the welcome, I've been watching the board even before the "new" Huntmasters was created. You"ve done a great job with it.
Yes, I remember our meeting in Globe, it was a pleasure to meet you. I've long envied your ability to hunt throughout the western US even though it certainly would be draining.
