So looking for shooting clubs and ranges here in TN. I came across a rimfire club and range that shoots 22 benchrest. We don't seem to have anyplace to shoot around here unless it's in your back yard.
I was interested to check it out as it is the closest range to where I live now. One other range I found was an hour something drive and this is 20 minutes away.
They shoot semi and bolt guns. I got an old 10-22 so thought maybe???? Went to the big match they have this year, a championship, to check it out.
Well...nobody shoots semis and the bolt guns were as expected. Not cheap. But the factory class sounded fair to try out.
Now I can't afford a CZ , which was the most popular, But I think I could swing something like a Savage to play with. All the Savages I have owned actually shot very well and I figured their barrels had to be fair to middling .
The match they ran had targets kinda like what I shot back in my 4 position days and x's do count.
They shoot 50 yard at this club and 50-100 at other clubs they told me about. It looked interesting enough for me to save up a check and get a simple stock toy to play with..
Some of you I am sure have had some formal bench shooting and would like to know what you think of 22 in particular.

Well ........... I'm more of a 'twang' guy than a 'bang' guy but I think that the most important things, in no particular order are;
(1) Get out of the house and go.
(2) Have fun.
(3) Enjoy the camaraderie and bs.

I used to shoot the Postals years back you could shoot anything you wanted in the stock class. I used varis center fires.
nothing wrong with 22 l.r. matches using stock rifle, you be up against roughly the same class. Savage is fine and better yet if you can find old savage BR. 22 or sako. Long as gun shoots your choice of ammo and you have good glass then have at it.

Well, go ahead. Get a rifle that qualifies and join the fun. I have many different shoots with my club and have not entered anything.
If you happen to mention your history, these guys will be so jealous. “How many coyotes?” The numbers will not compute, in Tennessee.
I’d spring for a CZ or Sako, or check the used market. You might be surprised.

I have been looking at used guns and maybe I can find a decent one. Looking at the prices of what I used to own and shoot are double crazy My custom 52 and my old Anschutz are worth a fortune,to me anyways. I just need to be patient and have a wad of cash ready.

Yes, Walt. And maybe even pawn shops. Sometimes those guys don’t know what they have. Maybe I’m kidding myself, maybe they know exactly what they have? But, you never know where a nugget will turn up. Remember years ago, we actually used to see guns for sale in want ads.
My cherished 6mm in Model 600 Remington, I bought in a little hole in the wall gun shop in down Town Pomona. I had just been burglarized when we lived in La Puente and what was stolen, among other guns was an almost new Model 660 Remington in 6mm Remington. So, this one had been worked on, no vent rib and no plastic trigger group. This was in 1975. I don’t remember what I paid for it but it was the handiest little walking around rifle I ever saw. I also put some work into it, and it’s a smooth handling little rifle that I have used for everything from day stand coyotes, to hogs and mule deer. I took it to Africa, intending on using it on Jackal, but what happened is that I never fired my 300, after sighting it in. I killed everything from Warthogs to Kudu and wildebeest with that little tricked out 6mm. It wasn’t intentional, just the way things turned out.
I am off topic and apologize, but my point is that this rifle was a serendipity situation, just happened to be killing a little time wile driving home from work. And, I have some pretty fancy rigs, but nothing I value more than my 6mm. I’ve actually owned three of them, but had one rebarreled.
Good hunting. El Bee
