Okay, yeah it’s fun to shoot at fucking gongs once in a while. But the whole trend is developing specific long range calibers with fast twists and extra long bullets. Now they got a backcountry that has a steel case and north of 80,000psi. WUT FIR?

Yes, the world of hunting has been waiting, WITH Bated BREATH, NO DOUBT! For gear capable of taking game at 800yards! Pity the poor schmuck that lays out $3,500 for probably foreign made rifle and at least 3 grand for the scope and shooting cartridges @ $8 per pop.

What are these dies going to cost? In the first place, at the current prices for components, is there any reason to hand load any more? $50-$60 A POUND for 4831? And this new cartridge uses a brand new propellant that nobody has. The pundits say we may get up to 3 reloads. They are intentionally pricing us out of the market, now it’s $80 for a box of twenty. Who are we kidding? That’s four dollars, and we will not get away with those prices. Really, EIGHT BUCKS PER SHOT!

What about primers? That is the weak link and they have got us by the peanuts! Maybe we need Mil spec primers for the new advancement in cartridge technology? Well, I say, let me shoot old fashioned brass cased ammunition and give us favorable seasons like black powder and archery? Yeah, see, my antique Model 700 is only good for 60,000psi with brass cases so I need a premium and long season during the rut. I know I will be handicapped but I like doing things the old fashioned way, with out dated equipment.

end of rant

And so it came to pass that men worshiped at the Alter of the technological addictions that we euphemize as progress.
Some things SHOULD be hard, for in the challenge resides the reward, win or lose. Is it the hunt or just the kill that we seek ????

Always about the hunt, something you westerners would never understand.... After all who came up with all these calling and hunting contests?????

Yes we did and I have nothing to apologize for. You want to look at corruption, check out Bass Tourneys. We in California Varmint callers busted our ass for fucking trophy’s. Other places fucked things up with cash prizes, and then bribed land owners for exclusive access to pristine (and locked gates) country. Sounds fair and sporting, to me? Not! Additionally, we never allowed interlopers, or sponsored teams. Strictly Club members. Leave it to easterners to fuck up a good plan.

Once again I have to go along with you Leonard. About all of it. Maybe that's why I decided to mess with that 32-20. But reloading it is 4 maybe 5 times what it cost me to reload it when I used that old gun in competition. Primers alone cost more than powder. But it is fun to play with and actually pretty accurate. In the hands of someone with better eyes than me anyways.
On the contest thing. Money really did ruin coyote contests and I did a few and saw some cheating and just told the wife it was a waste of time. When you are fairly good at what you do at calling coyotes in and you enter a contest you expect to do as well as the rest of the guys and gals and the averages of most of the teams were pretty say ,average. But the winner was many times over the average. Say most of us bring in 5 or so coyotes and the winner brings in 25. As the great sage Elmer Fudd once said' There's something skwoowy here."
New long range stuff is fine for shooting gongs for trophy's etc. but all I see is a bunch of yahoos out in the brush dinging the crap out of game that goes off and dies for the ravens, vultures and coyotes to feed on.
The vast majority of hunters can't hit the broad side of a barn at 100 yards let alone WWWAAAYYYY out there. Most hunters get buck fever and jerk the trigger and flinch etc anyways and really don't have the were with all to humanely shoot game at long distances. End of rant I suppose.

I may have that post laminated for display, Walt! I agree 100%. That’s exactly what happened to us only the winners had 23 and everybody else had 2 or 3. Something’s out of whack here?

Then we found out that those winners had deliberately hunted where other teams expected to go the next weekend, and they waved a light up and down and shot at eyes and scared every coyote to head for the hills, a nervous wreck. That’s really chickenshit, in my book. Anyways, they fucked up everything.

Look at map Leonard im in Midwest not the East or the dam south. Bass tornys was started in the south and moved there way north and then walleye torneys took over as well. As for you locked gates I never paid anyone to hunt on there land but at one time give farmer a basket of apples or 12 pak of beer just to say thanks. Coyote torneys started here maybe 5-8 years ago. Idea came from south or out west. I enjoy calling or hunting coyotes or even running them with dogs, i don't need a ego boost and don't pay much attension to numbers except of what i just put in my journal for my old keep sake. I have done a few contests though but only as a favor to guy putting them on nothing more.

Okay, a quiz. Is it Pop? Or a “Coke”, or Soda?
Where I grew up, it was Pop. When I got out here in SoCal, it’s always, Soda. Back in Georgia and So Carolina and Florida, (in the military) they call everything, “Coke” and Carling Black label was the beer. When I was stationed in Texas, it was Pearl, or Lone Star.

Pop but we also have soda as well which has more fizz. Here you ask for a coke and thats what you get a coke, ask for pepsi you get a pepsi. I think we have a cream soda as well. Beer? Budwiser or Busch.
Not real current on drinks as i stopped drinking long time ago except for glass of wine or peach schapps on ice.

In Minnesota, it was always Hamm’s, the beer refreshing! This was back then. White Castle was really BIG! That’s a weird Burger joint, if ya don’t know. How they ever got famous, I will ever know; but that’s Minnesota for ya. Stuck in a friggin’ TIME WARP! But, they’re cute when they are little.

PS Mudflaps rule!

Hams beer? I think they stopped selling it here when you went south. White castle not sure we have any of them left either, but a few places make the little burger called sliders, nice quick eating burger and most of it ends up in your stomach and not all over your face or the floor. Mudd flaps? We call them rock guards now days, saves on the pickup paint. we don't build unpaved roads out of sand we use gravel thus need for rock guards. You know in Minnesota we actually have roads that take you somewhere rather than Cali where you just go around in circles to get to neighbor's house. We can also watch a nice sunset with clear sky verses Cali. you have to put up with all that brown haze or what ever its called.

That's what politicians see all the time. Brown, and they smell shit along with it.
Where I'm at now they call shopping carts "Buggy's" and another thing I noticed about here in this part of the south is WHITE landscapers,No really they are lilly white rednecks on those zero turn lawnmowers.
Hard to believe if you're from the west.

Just called carts here or shopping carts if you talk with someone with some sort of degree.

Land scaping is where money is at these days for a young guy to get his start. The higher ups want pretty lawns and willing to pay for it plus we have a lot of houses going up all over the state so you need someone to build the lawns and make everything pretty. the cities all have a ordnance that you must have a nice yard.

Not sure what you mean by coloreds??? But if its what i think it is we have one in town and the rest are hard to come bye where i live , need to go to the twin cities to see all that sort of stuff.

Where is there some reference to “colored”? But when I was in Augusta, that was a common term. I did see signs, bus stations and water fountains, where colored had a separate accommodation. But we could buy moonshine in just about any bar downtown, in used whisky bottles; and it was never cheap. Georgia wasn’t what I ever imagined, lots of pine trees and a type of ground cover like Ivy where you couldn’t see where you were walking! Always concerned about Eastern Rattlesnakes, which are a hell of a lot bigger than western Diamondbacks that are usually less than 4 foot. We were close to South Carolina, Aycan? Something like that? Deep South blacks in shanties sitting on the front porch, never spent a time there after dark. But, Liberals have changed the name of Fort Gordon because he was a Confederate general. But that was a peace offering, all the military installations were named after some southern hero; and Liberals are doing some retro shit. Southerners never had a problem, WOKE easterners did. Where was I? Who cares?

Leonard was referring to Walts comment white land scrapers.
Zero turn lawn mower was invented first in Minnesota called "Grasshopper"

Just north of me is a Plantation, only one that existed in Minnesota far as I know. It's a museum now. No colored folk in that area either so not sure who worked the fields back then. Gilfillan is name of plantation; it has a big house and hand full of smaller houses and outbuildings. (Barns and sheds)

There has never been any cultural phenomenon of consequence in the state of Minnesota; and for good and well known reasons! And the fishing ain’t so hot either, unless you like lunker carp? But I’ll quit ragging on my home state, but it’s so much fun! Then you have a couple weenies like the governor and Mpls mayor, now that’s a pair to draw to! Criminally liberal!

LOL. The fishing has been at its best but it depends what lake you go to or river. I had my boat in for tune up last fall and will try to have it on the water on Labor Day weekend. Right now the Iwegians are up here getting their share of Bullheads.
We have over 10,000 lakes and each is noted for certain type of fishing or species to go after. Farther north you go bigger the fish and more variety. Hits the rivers for big Channel cats and flat heads and some lakes are stocked with blues. I'm not into bass but we have large mouth and small mouth bass close to home. For me its not about the size of fish but numbers you can catch for a meal and just time on a lake with nice summer breeze..

In the news today I see Cali. is going to vote on a Bill to put a daily bag limit on coyotes. LOL only in Cali. [Eek!] [Eek!] [Smile]

You know, must have been at least 15 years ago, maybe more, but no matter. I had a house full of guests and had just been fishing and that’s what we were going to feed everybody. I had some Largemouth bass and some Calico’s and a perfect opportunity to compare the taste and surprisingly, the Calicos were far more tasty than the Largemouths. These were the Florida strain introduced into southern California lakes and reservoirs. The Calicoes are offshore southern CA and the local islands like Catalina and San Clemente. For me, when I was SCUBA and snorkeling and spearfishing; the Calicoes were by far the most difficult, compared to everything else that you run into, from Moray’s to Sheepshead’s. Anyway way, I thought that was interesting, there is a 12” minimum on Calicos, easy to catch with anchovies, but chasing them with my 4 band Arbolette was a different story.

So, I know that everybody in Minnesota thinks that the Walleye Pike is the best tasting fish, bar none. I guess so, but it’s been so long ago I don’t even remember how outstanding was the taste? I know this much, catfish might be the greatest but I’ll never know? They are so ugly, I won’t eat them. The ones we had in Minnesota were called “Bullheads” and they were generally black, with a yellow belly. So far as I know, they never get real big, a 3-4 pounder is the biggest I ever saw. But we had a lot of them, I used to catch them by the dozens on nightcrawlers. But just toss them on the bank, they were over populated in the lakes around Minneapolis, basically a trash fish and that’s all we had, suckers, carp, sheepshead and Bullheads, all trash fish. Oh we had panfish too, what we called sunfish and Pumkinseeds, but everybody else calls Bluegill, or Brim. There is such a large variety of fish here in California, it’s hard to compare with Minnesota which has basically Northerns and Walleyes, in the northern half of the state. There, boring, I know but that’s the fishing report for today. lol

I've eaten most every freshwater fish that swims, but can take or leave them....Just not a lot of flavor? They all could be classed as tilapia as far as I'm concerned.
Much prefer saltwater species for table fare. Comes to think of it, I bet it's been 20 years since I've cooked up any freshwater fish?

THERE YA GO! This AZ guy seems to know his poop!
No really, I think my favorite eating fish is Swordfish, if you can find it and Halibut steak, not the filet. Grilled. I got a Wahoo down in Cabo one time, and it’s sure a fine eating fish, but how often do you see it on the menu?

Anyway, my taste in seafood runs to King Crab #1 and lobster over fish, you know, with fins? King Crab is possibly the sweetest tasting “flesh” I know of, it’s just phenominal! Anyway.

But King crab is getting a bit pricy. It’s been two years ago at Costco where I saw it offered by the box, frozen for $250. What it is now, I don’t know?

So yes. I agree. Ocean saltwater fish is a lot more tasty than freshwater anything. And landing a Dorado is a show, while reeling him in, (a bull) it’s like nothing else in fishing. They flash all those electric colors, it’s really unbelievable. And difficult to describe.

PS meant to comment and trash trout, in particular! First of all, the bones make it so formidable, you have to inspect it very carefully and then chew it carefully because you can easily miss one and you are looking at a trip to the EMERGENCY ROOM! Stay away! WTF is all the talk about salmon? Never liked it, don’t know what all the hype is about? And way overpriced!

Koko I got a bag of craw dads in the fridge with crab boil included. Just nuke them in microwave for 5 minutes good to go.

Fresh water bass is not what i call table fare, they mostly for catch and release up here or contests.
Walleye is a poor man's lobster in taste. Sunfish are ok depending on how you clean them and come in like 4-5 different species, and some do taste better than others just don't remember which. Bullhead has its own flavor as well, and catfish as well depending on which one you cook. I like the channels and blues.
I don't much care for northerns or pike but not bad if cooked in a beer batter.

Ocean fish is fine, but problem is getting fresh fish here and if not fresh not worth eating in my book.

King crab is awsome along with southern king crab. Southern king crab runs little cheaper in price. Problem with king crab is there is a shortage of them and limits to how many that can be taken do to some die off they are having so they run higher in prices.

I love a good rainbow trout if you can get ahold of some fresh ones. Oh and i just tried smelt for first time last week, not bad but i need to find a better way to cook them not up to par on that yet.

Ocean fish are cooked up little different from what i have had and melted butter and garlic with lemon makes all of them taste good i guess.

Sushi is also pretty good if you can find good restraunt that can do good job of making it and also keeping it fresh..

SHUSHI? I tried it once. Do not understand it! And these idiots can easily blow a hundred bucks and it’s about as filling as a bagel. Not a lot different than oysters, another “food” I will not touch! It’s all a stupid trend, a fucking scam, as far as I’m concerned. Put’s lead in your pencil.
SMELT! Used to be a big deal when I was a kid in Minnesota. I think they were netting them up in Lake Superior. About like a smelt or a grunion. I remember they used to have dried white fish stacked in barrels, on end and dried. Who the fuck eats dried fish? That’s Minneesota!
You never hear about Abalone? We used to get the Black abalone, but further north they had pinks which are about twice as big. You need an Ab knife, like a small tire iron to pry them from the rocks. That’s if you could catch them unawares, if they know you were around, they will clamp down and you cannot stick a knife between them and the rock. You have to slice off the black foot and then separate them from the shell. Then you either slice them in steaks or tenderize and deep fry. But they are excellent, like prawns but better. Many years ago you would see abalone shells scattered in gardens as decorations. Not any more and I don’t get it? REGULATIONS!

Leonard we have walk in freezers now in Minnesota so the smelt don't need to be salted and dried. You get them frozen in zip lock bag. Deep fry, frying pan or cook in oven and coat them with some cornmeal.
Smoked oysters every week, yummy!
Smoke and semi dried salmon pretty good as well.

So you are trying to tell me that Minneesota isn’t a time warped backwater where time stands still? Okay, if you say so? I haven’t been there since I was twelve but those are some pretty strong remembers. Of course, I know some things must have changed? As you said, they have renamed mudflaps, and that’s a step in the right direction. Still got ICE FISHING AND KNOTTY PINE. Right?

They still got cornfields, and 10,000 Lakes? I heard years ago that Florida has 18,000 lakes but ten thousand is still a lot, no doubt.
But what about skeeter season and DOG DAYS, where you can’t go swimming or risk getting polio? And, they are all friggin’ Democrats! That ain’t changed! Stuck in the Wendell Wilkie era. Who was that Minn. governor that ran for president of the United States 20 times? Does Oreville Freeman ring a bell? Nope ain’t none of them, but I can’t think of the actual perpetual candidate. Whatever. Those were the days!
Ever hear of the Foshay Tower? Me and my buddy used to take the elevator to the top and throw water ballon’s off the top they even had a hose connection on the observation deck to blow up those balloons. Zero security. Of course, you couldn’t hit anything besides to lower roof. It used to be a big deal to wait every afternoon when they would turn on the weather balloon. It was a big lighted ball at the very top and it would be a different color, red, white or blue and that would predict the weather for the next day. Big event! Everybody waited at evenings as the sun was going down to wait for the weather ball to light up. People would actually wait, staring towards downtown until they lit up the weather balloon. No shit, that was Minneapolis in the 50’s

Only big building or tower is the IDS building.

Yeah we got corn fields, soybean fields, sweet corn, sugar beets and few carrot fields along with potatoes. Old Dutch potato chips is out of Fargo.

Yeah we still have ice fishing, nothing like it. And half inside of my house is Knotty pine.

Oh todays fish houses are built like campers, can live on the frozen lake for days and weeks if you have a mind to.

Paul and Babe the blue ox are still around yet.

Yeah, Paul Bunyon. Trying to think of the town! It’s like just past Lake Millac. Birmidgi? Must be the biggest town between Duluth and Mpls? Anyway, that’s where you can see Paul Bunyon and Babe the Blue Ox. Sorry, it’s been a long time ago. Did I mention that my mother was born in St. Cloud, where they hanged all the uprising Injuns, I think it was 39 of them.

They were Sante Souix, I think? But all the Souix were originally from Minneesota, they were late comers to the western plains, and promptly kicked out the Crow and I think Blackfeet? But were asshole buddies with the Northern Cheyanne.
