Ok fellers, what irons ya got in the fire for 2014?

Posted by TundraWookie (Member # 1044) on December 27, 2013, 09:27 AM:

No irons planned just yet. Have a two piece takedown longbow from Big Jim archery in the works though. [Smile] Figured if I was really going to shed weight on my dall sheep hunting pack, a sub 2 pound bow is the way to do it.

I already have a lot of iron I don't use, Fred. You'll get there. It's all about the latest version of your personal dream. These concepts evolve.

Good hunting. El Bee

I found a set of Bonanza .17-223 dies for $10 at the local pawn shop last week. I'm going to switch out the barrel on a Model 10 Savage and have myself a micro fire-breather.

I'm going to get the Dillons warmed up, going to see if I can melt some of the blue off of them. Handgun reloading first, then rifles, and lastly scatterguns. Has anyone paid any attention to lead shot prices lately? Shiiiiit....

I'm wild and crazy !!

Gonna' pick up a Marlin 336 in 30/30 probably next week.

WHOA!

I bought an old Marlin just for laughs a while ago. I think it's a Model 1883 in 44-40. No accounting for taste?

Good hunting. El Bee

PS, I'd go for the Guide Gun in 45-70 if I ever have another brain fart lever action impulse.

Love the old Marlin guide guns. Their quality has suffered since Remington bought them out, keep your eyes opened for older Marlin's if you're looking for a guide gun.

I'm searching for a Kimber Montana in 223, don't know if I could build a better rifle to suit me. I think one rebarrelled to 17-204 would be a nice toy but the 204 and 22-250ai I have now kinda do everything I need done.

Went to two gun shows today and the only thing that interested me was a Kimber SVT 22, it's a shame looking at the crap they're selling these days.

Tom, I keep wanting a Montana in 223 also. I've always been a Mauser fan so maybe that is one reason I an such a CZ fan.

I picked up a new Shilen 12 twist that is most likely going on a Rem 700 and becoming a 223AI.

When my CZ 17-204's barrel finally gives up I plan on building another one.

I always liked the small calibers for what I do. Getting them to come to me and close is the thrill Kind of like turkey hunting, calling then in and especially hearing them drum is my biggest thrill, Sometimes I don't even shoot them, I don't really care for eating wild turkey too much. However I will shoot the coyotes, because that is also a thrill for me.

Heck most of the bass I catch, I throw back also. Not so much with good walleye or crappy. [Smile]

I'm with ya on walleye, but we always thought crappie tasted a bit muddy. Sunfish, (pumpkinseed or bluegill) are more tasty, in my book. Even a nice size perch is edible. I'm not a big fan of rainbow trout, too much trouble watching out for those wicked little bones. Anyway, we have a lake out here that grows red ear's to two pounds, if you can yank them out of the branches.

Another Mauser fan, here. What's the interest in a Kimber 223? That's a caliber I have no use for. I thought I had the answer in a 223Ackley, but for $450, that extra 50fps wasn't worth it. And, an average 22-250 kills coyotes a hell of a lot better, further out.

Good hunting. El Bee

No arguments here.

My 22-250AI is a great rifle and I'm going to keep it, but it is loud. I killed some critters out by Vic's a few weeks back and my ears were ringing pretty bad. Went back to the smaller cartridge. Most of my shots are under 75yrds, so I don't think I need the stomping power the 250 has unless I planned on shooting 300 yards or so. I actually ended up putting a foam ear plug in my left ear, and one partially in my right. I have enough hearing loss already and it aint getting better.

I bet a regular ole 223 or a 222 would work for what I'm doing, but the AI just has that "cool factor" to it.

I have one in a 1-8 twist just for shooting the 75 AMAX's at long ranges and goofing off, hard to get the 75's presently, but I still have a few hundred left.

Oh yea, interest in the Kimber? Well the Kimber Montana is a lot of rifle for the price. Very light if your into that sort of thing and has a 1-9 twist which could come in handy if your state requires lead free ammo.

I only have one Kimber presently, and it is a 22RF, I sold an ole Kimber of Oregan Cascade a few years back. It was a very nice rifle. I hear the new Kimber rifles are hit and miss as far as accuracy goes. So I haven't pulled the trigger yet. Actually those little CZ's are very hard to push aside and get a Kimber over.

I have no problems with a 223, especially when twisted right but my main interest in one is as a donor for a 17-204.

But the 204 Montana I have now will have to do for now. I picked up a Kimber 22 SVT yesterday and leased another hunting spot so I am broke again. Dang 22's, I have a Kimber Hunter that shoots better than me but I just liked this one.

Got a Marlin "Outfitter" 444P when they first came out. Put XS ghost ring sights on it, was a pretty nifty little thang to carry. Dragged it around the 'Dacks a few times, trying to spook up an early season black bear, to no avail. Wound up selling it, without ever gettin' it bloody...

Tom, I put a TacSol barrel onto a 10/22 last summer and dropped it back into a Hogue stock to hunt with this winter. Squerl plinkin' & such...

How's the Kimber shakin' out?

Seems like a person needs to be knowledgable to buy Kimber? Didn't some New Yawk guy buy the company not long ago? Maybe not quite like Pre '64, but there's a difference, right?

Good hunting. El Bee

Kimber of Oregon went out and a new owner opened up Kimber in Yonkers New York. Heard several horror stories from a guy who used to work at Kimber of Oregon. (Steve Timm) from salt water soaked stocks to no full time gunsmith employed. I have never owned one of them.

But I bought my first Yonkers Kimber, a 22 Hunter and it shoots 1/4" 5 shot groups with Eley Tenex. I then traded a machine gun for a Montana in 204 that did 3/4" groups with factory ammo and started killing enough critters with the 6.6lb gun that nothing else came out of the safe. I bought a 243 Montana and never fired it, just had a 22-250AI barrel screwed on it and haven't hunted it yet.

You always read how they are a crap shoot but they're like most other guns in that they might need bedded or sometimes the mag box will ride too far into the stock or the mag spring is weak, (noted problems). But what you wind up with rivals any custom gun I've seen for my uses anyway. Sure I wish they'd pay more attention at the factory but I've sent back 2 Remington 700's that were screwed from the factory.

This new 22 will shoot, Mike (Prune Picker) loaned me a 12x Leupold to try out and it did pretty good but I just tried several brands of target ammo and you really need to run several rounds of one brand down a clean bore to get the best accuracy. The gun functioned fine and did 3/8" groups in high wind at 50 yards but I need a different scope and am waiting on that before I decide how to mount it.

Right now I've just put it aside and am looking to see what I really want on it. It's a keeper I think.

Got a new Micky to build on the other day. Found one in stock, since McM is onnabouta 6 mo. lead time for new orders...

We're doing something silly with a 40° improved shoulder. With a 40th birthday coming, doing an Ackley Improved build seems justified [Wink]

That PT&G detachable bottom metal uses an AE single stack 5 rd magazine, no angles for the case to navigate when feeding from staggered feed mag. Hoping the sharp shoulder of the Improved case design pops straight up & into the chamber. Gonna be a bad mamma-jamma...

Fred, what did you think of the "ghost ring" sights ?

Posted by knockemdown (Member # 3588) on January 11, 2014, 02:52 PM:

Dave, they were a noticeable improvement over the factory irons.
Check out Skinnersights.com, too. Got one of them on my 94/22...

Thanks Fred, kinda what I was thinking.

I'll try to give the factory irons a whirl in the morning, not expecting much, and know that going in. If, I can hit minute of paper plate @ 50 yards, I'm good..Lol

Got alot to do tomorrow headed to central Oregon on Monday, for about a week=vacation..Yay [Big Grin]

Anderson Cooper has a new build going.Yahoo reports he payed 1.4 million last night at a 'benefit' for a 'sculpture' to be made from Sean Penns' 65 'discarded' firearms.
Gonna be tough to beat that this year.By the way, sorry to say I think bidding is closed if you were interested.

Anderson Cooper is a sodomite, or cake boy for the more sensitive ones here. Everyone knows they aren't normal.

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on January 12, 2014, 09:57 AM:

Yes, obvious. And, I don't see him as a "TOP MAN" either? He would be the one getting drilled.

Good hunting. El Bee

edit: there are sensitive one's here?

edit: and no, I have never been in prison.

Coopers, a fag pure and simple..Asshole !

Not that, I'm angry towards him, mind you. (edit) Yeah right !

Anyway being a small caliber guy for years, the recoil of a 30-30 is punishing..Damn [Big Grin]

Yeah, it's the way they are built, lever actions. Can be brutal. And yet, a pipsqueak cartridge.

Dave, that 444P was minute of stew can @ 50yds with those XS sights, and I was plenty pleased with that!
Sold it before our deer hunting AO became rifle legal. Otherwise, it'd have been a pisser hunt with in the woods. Hope ya have fun with your levergun!

Fred, minute of stew can is some pretty good shootin' with a lever IMO..

I think, I'll get 'em ordered up next week. I was minute of paper plate @ 25 yards last Sunday. My shots were also stringing horizontaly to the left, that's gotta' be me, might have to get a tighter front bag, to accomodate the narrow forend.

Dragged it with me on vacation, my brother has an old Winchester, so went out to the hills one evening and we were both minute of cardboard box @ 40 yards freehand Lol..

These things take some gettin' used to, but damn you feel manly with one in your hands.. [Big Grin]

First rifle I ever had was one my grandpa gave me...A Savage 99 in .300 Savage. Has the checkered stock, Schnabel forend, cartridge counter on the side. Weaver 4x scope on top.

I love those rifles. Lever actions are bad ass.

Yes, but that's a hybrid. Actually able to handle modern pressures. I like them, myself. At one time, when lefties didn't have much choice, a Model 99 was and still is a great choice. My cousin had one chambered in 284 Winchester, just about the pinnacle of lever action performance.

Good hunting. El Bee

Agreed. My dad had one in 308 but newer than mine. Rounded forearm with lighter colored wood.

Model 88?

Posted by Dave Allen (Member # 3102) on January 19, 2014, 12:11 PM:

Ok, went out to the range this morning, foggy and 26 degrees..Brrr..

Damn, I hate the fuckin' fog !!

Anyway things are looking better, put three into a ragged hole & one a 1" or so to the right and one a few inches high. About a 5" group @ 50 yards. Yeah nothing to brag about, but this rifle seems like it might have potential, and, or I'm gettin' used to it.

I think milk jug shooting sessions, might be in order from here on out.

Gotta' watch some football, my three favorite teams play today. Broncos-Seahawks-49er's.

Peace.. [Smile]
