Here is a picture of my new DPMS Prairie Panther in 223 caliber. So far, it looks like it is going to be a real shooter. It has a Vortex Crossfire 4-16x50 scope with Vplex Wide Illuminated reticle, 20" target grade barrel, 1 in 8 twist, 2 stage match trigger. Didn't have a bore sighter, so I had to shoot at 25 yds to start, taking 8 shots out the truck window to get it halfway right at least, and then back to 100 yds with my bench, etc., and it took 12 shots to get it almost there, one more adjustment, and 4 shots exactly where I wanted them, easily covered by a dime. I think I'm gonna like it, but the coyotes won't like it a bit. :laf: :laf:

Just so anyone is interested, take the upper off the lower, pull the bolt carrier, prop it up on your bags and boresight away.

Don't feed the troll.

Saves a lot of time and ammo.

Bearhunter, that rifle is a custom order. Took about 2 months from submitting the order. Steve Esping was a big help on the details, great guy.

As for boresighting, I did a real quick version of what was mentioned here. I thought Bud's Gun Shop, where I got the scope, would have one of the laser bore sighters, but since they didn't, I did the quick version. It was on paper at 25 yds, which worked out, but it would have been closer with the laser unit.

Just trying to be helpful for a change.

Tom, I never thought anything else. I just wanted everyone to know that method will work. My "Assuming" Bud's would have a boresighter was my bad, so had to improvise.

It's too bad the name, "Prairie Blaster" was already taken.

Yeah, and proper zeroing isn't all that important when effective spray and pray tactics are applied. I envy my fellow machine gunners who aren't limited to a 5 round magazine.

And then there are us poor souls who carry 2 in the belly and 1 in the chamber..LOL

Yes, almost laughable. Keep on keeping on.

Leonard, I thought your "Prairie Blaster" comment was pretty damned funny, but not enough to merit a double post. [Smile] Maybe calling in critters with a Prairie Blaster and folding their tent with a Prairie Panther would be too cool for school. [Wink]

I hope you did notice that I have the clip that holds 4 shells plus 1 in the chamber. [Cool]

I believe you.

I modified a twenty round magazine once, when I sallied forth with my ancient Colt AR specifically for slaying shrimp AZ coyotes. I soon found that the five rounds came in real handy for killing those spinners that I never saw before while using an adequate bolt gun. Yes Siree. Five seemed about right?

Just kidding, good luck with your new gun, Al.

Hey I have a 5 round magazine, in fact 2 of them. I get to use them deer hunting here when I don't want to destroy too much meat with the 223.

They're actually Colt blocked 20's.

I just used a piece of wood the correct length inserted down the middle of the spring, worked flawlessly. Works like a dowel in a shotgun, known as a "plug". I think the regulation is stupid and intended to placate ignorant gun haters.

Those "people" think that if you have twenty rounds, you intend to use all of them just to make sure Bambi won't be going anywhere and is completely dead. Kinda like what I did with those "spinners" that weekend long ago.

But, all this talk about machine guns, I may order one from Dan Carey, if he will give me a deal?

This particular rifle comes with two 20 shot clips standard, but I would never need them. Steve Esping was nice enough to send me one 5 and one 10. Around Kentucky, I doubt that I'll ever have the 10 shot clip in. In fact, more often than not, I'll put the clip in with 4 shells, leaving me with 1 in the chamber and 3 in the clip.

The AR platform is getting so popular that I have some concern that some of the inexperienced hunters would take one of the 20 shot or 30 shot clips, and start cutting loose at a running coyote, and bad stuff could easily happen.

As long as we're being concerned... they're called magazines!

That's why we need a guy like you proofreading every word for accuracy, and now you get to do the spell check, too.

And, I was kidding about ordering a machine gun. lol

I'll get right on that spell check thingie.

I'm shocked, you had me fooled, I thought there was hope...

Actually, you're pretty predictable. Commiefornia legal AR's are pretty lame anyway.

I have three at my disposal, while my grandson is deployed in Europe. They are stacked way in the back, I just can't generate a lot of interest. Must be just me, they seem awkward, but great for missions, etc.

I can't believe you found three coyotes that patient Jim! [Wink]

I think the semi-auto has its advantages over other actions in very specific circumstances... circumstances most predator hunters never encounter.

Yeah, and I think I saw part of a ladder?

When hunting alone Jason, I don't have to worry about any dog hogging partners. That allows me to bide my time while watching coyote #1, and allow coyote #s 2 and 3 come on in. THAT'S when the machine gunning begins. [Razz]

Yep, ladder. Without it, there would only have been 2 posers.

I swear, I am going to try a ladder. I have brought one with me a couple times, and never actually used it. I think it was because of stuff being in the way, or having to lower the tailgate? I'm cautious though, since professor Irwin Corey told me he fell off of one while shooting a coyote. I don't think I have that level of concentration, but falling on a barrel cactus would ruin my day.

...and then some!

I've made a few unscheduled dismounts, but only one resulted in landing anyway but on my feet. I caught a foot on the way down that time and landed on my knees. Luckily, no rocks or cactus.

If you try it, it's very important to test it every time you take a step up. Rock the piss out of it. If it acts shaky, move it and start over. Make sure the back legs are sunk in well. Stand on the back and bounce if you have to. The center of gravity changes as you climb. You can be sitting there and the back legs will sink slowly so you don't notice until you get to the point that it tips.

I don't want to die of exposure after breaking a hip, but I suppose it would be fitting.

I was thinking of some sort of fold up outriggers for that real soft stuff with the unnoticed squirrel holes. Then, the jury is out on how far up to go, some advocating standing on the first step and others sitting on the top. It's times like this I wish we could hear from a REAL expert.

gh....lb

Not that you are not, of course. With more time in grade than most. But, I have a tip.

I took a rickety wood six footer that I had given to my son and he thought it was suitable for kindling and gave it back. I took a couple days, tightened up the hardware, and used gorilla glue on every junction point, top and bottom. Result is the sturdiest six foot ladder in town, bar none.

Leonard, I think we need a pic of you up on a ladder, wearing the Elmer Fudd hat & toting your Colt AR! Not holding my breath for it though...

Tom, I was trying to scan through two magazines when I called those magazines clips. I had just watched two or three video clips on top of that. Life in the fast lane is so confusing. [Wink]

I forgive you.

It is pretty stupid on my part but it annoys me and I have a pard that calls em that just cause he knows it does.

Friends don't let friends use "clips" while hunting. You know, those removable things that you have to load?

Sorry about jumping in on this thread so late, but I just saw it. I have a couple of AR platforms, and my next upper will probably be a 6mm WOA. White Oak Armament has a great reputation with the high power shooters and their upper prices are real fair. That little extra in bullet weight and diameter would surely put an AR over the top in killing power for coyotes IMHO. With the 223, shot placement is real critical and my AR10 in 308 is a little heavy as a calling rig. If I ever do go this route it will be the first time I've ever gone to a custom cartridge. Everything else I shoot is standard stuff available almost anywhere.
