I have a Browning Gold 12 ga, and I want to shoot some #4 buckshot out of this thing. I believe the Brownings are backbored so I guess that throws a different unknown into the works.

Anyone shoot this, or got some good ideas?

Dan,
Take a look at the Buck Kicker Xfull http://www.kicks-ind.com/ASP/buckkicker.asp

This tube shoots good patterns with lead BB , Lean #4 Buck and Dead Coyote T's. Be sure to pattern your gun before taking it hunting though.

Before you go out and drop serious coin on a specialty tube, you may want to sit down with beverage and think on your average shot distances. If most of your shots are in the 20 to 30 yard range, a plain old full choke that you likely already have should work. 30 to plus 40; yeah, it's time for a tube that patterns tight. If you're trying for coyotes with a shotgun out to 60 & 70 yards, you may want to consider a Mini-14 instead.

One thing to consider; as the pattern tightens up, the shotgun goes from a 'point & shoot' weapon to a 'aim & shoot' weapon.

Try test patterns with the tubes you already own before you spend any money on more. I know of one individual that found he got the best patterns with #4 buck with a modified choke in a Bennelli. This person is Gary McCraw who was 1/3 partner in the video Maximum Predator Control. I cannot be positive about this but I believe he mentions this in a lenghthy piece of side footage that comes with this video. I frequent a gunshop that Gary works at and he has told me this in person.
Try it with what you already have and go from there first.
Good Luck

Hi DanS and others,

I'm in the same situation...brand new Browning Gold 3.5, 24" barrel. I patterned the Hevi-Shot with the Xtreme Turkey that came with the gun and at 30yds, ~ 10 pellets in 30" circle. An older Invector Plus, full choke offered about 15 pellets. A little disappointing.

I will try the modified during the coming weekend, but curious as to what DanS finds out.

Shotgun barrels are fickle animals. I have an 870 with a modified barrel(fixed choke) that patterns tighter than any other barrel and choke combination I've ever tried. That holds true only if you are shooting shot sizes larger than #4 (not #4 buck).
I bought the gun at a time when the thought of coyote hunting with a shotgun was about as foreign to me as the thought of voting for Hilary so I never really patterned it with large shot.

I found out how tight it patterned the first year we were forced to use steel shot for waterfowl. One of the guys in the blind with me had crippled a duck and it was setting on the water at about 55-60 yards out. The other three guys in the blind with me emptied their guns on the thing with no apparent effect. I pulled up and shot and completely ragged the duck. I don't think that I'd be exaggerating if I said that my pattern was only about 1/4-1/3 as wide as the other guns.
One of the other guns was a full choke and one an identical 870.

Put some #4 buck in that gun and it works good. You could even make a fairly strong argument that it is a bit too tight for some shotgun applications.

Moral of the story - try some of your more open chokes before you spend a gob on the premium ones.

Hi JoeF,

I've read the Invector Plus choke FAQ's and they indicate that Hevi-Shot should be treated as steel shot. If this is the case, the modified will provide a full choke pattern. Your advice seems 'spot-on' in regards to changing to more open choke. Go'n to try this out over the weekend. Thx.

Damn, that buckshot is some expensive stuff...
I about fell over looking at prices for the hevi shot and others.

I got a load for some #4 now and will be trying out some reloads. I did pattern out a few chokes. They will work out to 40 yards, so that should work for me.

#4 buck ehh....a little big for those Mo bobwhites ain't it?

#4 on Bobwhite's, [Smile] those things are like gold around here. Besides I have to use my 20ga on something to justify it.

Out in your neighborhood, I was tempted to use a darn pellet rifle on 'em, seemed like they were everywhere, running on the ground.
