As a friend of mine was picking up a dead coyote and an empty Dead Coyote shell, he realized he'd been using a 3.5" shell in his 3" Winchester 101. It loaded, fired, and ejected flawlessly.
I have two 3.5" guns that were spensive - and I know I can buy a 3" SPR super- or juxta-posed for under $400. Is the Remington/Baikal steel receiver loaded with the wrong ammo the cheap way to a 3.5" gun?
Do you think the a roll crimp makes a difference?
The older I get, the weirder the ideas, the more I am inclined to try them, and the more inclined to just forget and do something sort of stupid.

I'm going to call that a bad idea. Come on Gary. Especially with all your money?
Pretty basic. And, what is the perceived advantage?
Good hunting. LB

Seems like a good way to work on developing a flinch......either from anticapating the 3.5" kick or the concussion of explosive disassembly.

Kok',
LOL I thought the same thing. A cousin of mine was stretching a bungie cord and splipped up. Yep, he got the hook right through the eye.
I suppose I'd shoot a 3 1/2" shell through a 3" action(receiver...whatever) with about as much gusto and confidence as I now do while stretching bungies! SPOOOOOOOOKY!!! Mega-flinch!!! ![[Eek!]](eek.gif)

Nahuatl,
The problem I noticed when I shot a 3" shell in a 2&3/4" chamber, was that the hull did not open all of the way. This almost certainly would cause very high pressure spikes. I can see the same thing happening with a 3&1/2 incher in a 3" chamber.

Like Rich said very high pressure spikes and you can also get a wadd stuck in the barrel. Don't worry the wadd well come out after second shot but you will have a buldge in the barrel.

I witnessed a 16 gauge overunder accidentaly loaded with 20 gauge shells this past weekend and they fired perfectly.

"Well......it worked ok for a while"
Frequently heard excuse in emerengency rooms.
This whole mix & mis-match ammo thing; really bad bad idea.
Back in the mid '60s our local sporting goods stores had collections of blown shotgun barrels. This was before anybody thought to color code shells by gauge. One maker would $ell red 12 ga. & green 20 ga. Another would offer just the opposit color scheme. Nothing was standard. With large hunting families, the adults shooting 12s the teen-agers 20s & the young'ns .410s it was just a matter of time until a 20 ga. shell got mixed in with the 12s. A 20 ga. shell will slide down the chamber of a 12 ga. far enough for a 12 ga. shell to fit in behind it. The results were never pretty.
