Cal, would you mind telling me a little bit about your 6/284? Mainly, I'm interested in what barrel length and twist you have, along with what powder you are using and what velocity you are getting. If I remember right, you're using the 68 Bergers.

Got a 6/284 on the drawing board and getting ready to order a barrel. Like to get as much current real life info as I can from those actively using their rigs in the field at this point in a project.

Thanks!

Dave,
I have the 1 in 12 in my 6-284. I have the same in my .243 just because I only shoot the lighter bullets. 80 grn or less, and I never figured on shooting a deer bullet in them. My 6-284 barrel is a full 26 as is my .243. In my .243 I get the 68 grn Bergers to 3650 fps with H414. The 6-284 does Ok with 414, but I can get a little more out of RL22 or 4831. I gain about 150 to 200 fps with the 284 case vs the 243 case. If I had it to do over again I think you can get awful close to the 6-284 with a 6mm improved with the light bullets. If I were going to shoot heavier bullets I would stay with the 6-284. But I haven't played with the 6-284 enough to really have all the answers yet. I also have a 25-284 and love it. In reality it's the same as a 25-06, but I like that shorter action.

Sounds about right to me Cal. I'll be doing a slow twist too, no plans to shoot heavy bullets. Might even do a 14 twist.

You're right about the 6AI too. I've got one with a 12 twist and I really doubt that I'll gain much if anything in velocity with the light bullets over it with the 6/284. I'm shooting 75 Vmax at 3800 fps in the 6AI, with a 12 twist 27" barrel.

The short action I'm using is just barely long enough for the 6/284 with light bullets though, and just barely too short to extract the 6AI's loaded with 75's. That ought to be enough of an excuse for the 6/284, shouldn't it? LOL!

Really, when you get right down to it, the plain old .243 gets 'er done just fine with these light bullets. I've safely loaded several .243's to over 4000 fps with 55's and 58's. My partner Tim has a Model 70 with a 22" barrel that spits them out that fast no problem. I only get about 150 fps more than that with my 6AI. It's heavier bullets and longer barrels where these larger capacity cases really start to shine.

But, I've always wanted a 6/284 and by gawd I'm going to have one, LOL!
