Just bought my wife new 17. I'm having problums with the scope. I can't get the scope cross hairs to go down for enough to use. At 20yrds aiming at a target the bullet hits about 18 inches below target. How can I fix the proublum? I've tried 4 different scopes same thing on each one HELP!!!

It may be your scope mounts...is your base mount a one or 2 peice?If its not the mounts then you may have to use shims under the rear mount,use brass shims if you can get them.I would check your screws in your front locking lug and check rear screw to..gun may not be bedded in stock properly.check all before trying a shim.

You do realize that the markings on the scope refer to which direction you want the bullet to move? I am not trying to be a smart alec but have seen a lot of people misunderstand the directions. This is especially true of people familiar with european sights as the european sights are marked the opposite of US sights.
If that is not the trouble, you probably have the wrong bases for the rifle.

They are 2 piece mounts. The scope is a bushnel 3x9x32 they came with the scope there is no room to put any shims under it, it almost touches the barrel. What bases would you recamend? Thanks for any help guys.

Take an old pair of scissors ( Ask your wife for a pair to be safe ) and cut up a beer can into strips, so that it will fit just inside of the rear base. Between the bottom of the scope and the base. If one strip of aluminum doesn't add enough add a second.
Any chance they sold you a set of tapered bases and you have them reversed?

What gun are we talking about? What bases? Bases might have a number stamped on the underside, like 700 or 98, etc. What it sounds like is that you have a mismatched set, rear base too low or the front base too high?

In addition to all the other possiblities mentioned, if all else fails, look to see that the barrel isn't cocked. Not very common, but it does happen.

I don't like to repeat the question Lenoard asked but we need the answere before trying to give you our best idea of solving the problem.Who made the gun?Rem.,Win.,Rugar?.I prefer Rem.or Redfield solid base dove tail mounts.Before i would decide to possibly changing mounts i would check as asked above,are the mounts on backwards?

The gun is a Savage Arms Mod# 93R17 FV 17HMR Bolt Action. The scope is a Bushnell Airgun/Rifle Scope Mod# BU-RS-720039 it came with the bases. I'll change them tonight and bore sight it and see if it is on target, now it is about half way on bore sighter. If that dosen't work I try shimming it. If that dosen't work I'll try another brand of rings/bases. My wife wanted the gun for Bobcats,Coyotes and ground chucks.

Use Burris Signature offset rings. They can be adjusted to correct for 20 minutes of angle. Plus in my opinion they are the best rings available other than the heavy custom rings.

If you want better rings than the Burris Signature Zee style rings, Then you'd better be ready to cough up $200-300, for the customs.
Badger Ordinance makes some great rings, I just can't bring myself to spend $250+ for a pair of them.

Since the rifle in question is not exactly a cannon, Badger Ordinance rings might not be needed.

That's sort of what I was thinking. Used to be a rule of thumb to pay as much for a scope as for the rifle. Now, these rich guys down in AZ suggest that we need to spend as much on the rings (alone) as on the rifle!

The first new vehicle I ever bought was a 1969 Datsun pick up for $1,830.00. I bought a new 1971 Dodge Charger (wish I still had it) which cost me about $3,300, as I recall?
I don't remember how much I paid for the first Leupold scope I ever owned, but it couldn't have been more than a hundred dollars? I do remember that I sold it at least 10 years later for $95 dollars. That guy is still using it. Never should have done it. I have sold many scopes and the only one I don't regret was a 6X18 Redfield.
My advice, buy good quality scopes and never sell them. (I'm learning to follow my own advice) Man! I have sold some perfectly good scopes for peanuts!

You guys missed my point.
The Burris rings are great, and reasonably priced. I was saying that the only way to get better rings than the Burris Signature Zee rings, you were going to have to spend some mega bucks.
