I just purchased a new Winchester Ranger 30-30. I bought the rilfe for maybe some hunting donw the road but more just to shoot... i always wanted to be a cowboy. Yes please laugh at me I have put two 20 round boxes down it over several days. however i had some rounds that did not fire.
Now I can think of two mistakes that i already have made
Number 1 When i was shooting the first box i had some i had to refire i did not bother to check them thinking that i was not holding the lever done enough to allow the rifle to fire. So in the end all of that box went down the barrel. Secound boxes i relized that some of the bullets were not firing even though the primers did have indetations. So we do not know if the first box was having the same problems
Number 2 The ammuntion may have not been good. It was (i may have this wrong) UMC that was bought at a gun show. So it could be bad ammo. When i inspected the ammo at the show it looked good however i do not really know much, I am a young college kid, and mostly self tought when it comes to shooting.
I heard that Winchester was bought by a Japanese company and the quality of the rifles have gone way down but i might be wrong. So Help please was it probably the Ammo or is something wrong with the rifle. Thank You

It is most likely a combination of factors.
Your best bet is to send the rifle back and hope for the best.

Darn i was hopping it was just the ammo. I have a couple of boxes of good stuff should i see how that shoots first.
The rifle is at home and i am at college so time delay and anziaty is going to kill me. lol.

It sounds like the rifle is doing it's job if the primers are dented. Maybe you should compare the indentations to the bullets that fired. UMC is pretty okay ammo... if the primers aren't seated all the way or improperly they would do that. What happens is the firing pin will strike the primer and push it the rest of the way in, but it would not set the primer off.
I would definitely take the rifle into a local smith to be safe and explain the problem. But it really just sounds like bad ammo.

I've had trouble a few times over the years from old or cheap ammo. Now I only buy new Remington, Winchester or Federal. (Some rifles are more accurate with certain brands)
Also, a safety reminder, missfired cartridges should not be handled for at least one minute, as they could still explode, and wear hearing protection so you can hear your grandchildren when you are old.
