Is it any good? I found a new one in .223, synthetic stock, 24" barrel. The only thing I don't like is that the action is made in japan. I just want some feedback before I decide.

Welcome to the New Huntmasters, coon_whacker. Glad to have you on board.

Personally, I like the Vanguard. It represents "value" about like a Savage does, over Winchesters and Remingtons. Doesn't make the Vanguard "better", it just means that you pay your money and you take your pick.

Do you drive a Hyundai or a Lexus SUV? That's up to you. You can kill coyotes with a Sako or a Vanguard.

Good luck with your choice. LB

My gun of choice would be a CZ American.

Ah yes, a classic!

(pst, what the hell is a Fairmont?)

That CZ is a nice piece of work, but probably heavier than the Vanguard. http://www.cz-usa.com/product.smallbore.php

Are you are opposed to the Jap action because it's foreign? They produce some decent firearms, barrels are no worse than domestic, in most cases.

Good hunting. LB

My father-in-law just bought a Howa which is made in Japan by the same company that builds the actions on the vanguard and some of wheatherby's $1000 plus dollar rifles. All the reviews on his gun were very positive. His a stainless thumbhole standard barrel in a .223. He mounted a 5-15x42 3200 bushnell eleite. At 100yards useing a 45gr.winchester hollow point both of us were shooting clover leaf holes. There is nothing wrong with the vanguard.
