What powders you fellows like in the 22-250 ack.? I am going to start out with 55 grain and experiment up from there. Anyone now where you can get bergers in Canada?
Rich I noticed that you get 4127 fps out of your gun This has peaked my curosity.
Thanks again every one.

I have always like the 22-250 AI, and felt is was possibly the best all around coyote rifle/caliber combination out there. Plenty or reach, with flat trajectory, and have taken some coyotes with it "way out there". Mine started life as a Ruger varminter, so I of course trimmed down the stock dimensions, and sawed off six inches of barrel. I neve got the high end velocities the cartridge is capable of(55 grain bullet @4,000fps+) but I could scoot the 50 grainers at that speed. I used RL15 quite a lot, then had best results with H414. A couple other fellas here have one or have owned one, Im sure they will give their pet loads.

Albert, I don't know where you can get Bergers in Canada, I do know that if you come down here and hunt with me you can buy all you want over in Glendale.
I did some research before reloading for mine, just as you are doing now, and read that shooters were getting extraordinary velocities from VihtaVuori N 550 which is a clean cooler burning powder. It is the only powder I have used because I hit the jackpot with the first loads I put together. The fellow I bought the rifle from worked up accuracy loads with 4064 and the targets he sent along with the rifle were impressive. None were quite as good as the .197 I shot with the first load I tried with the 62 gr. Berger. How's that for painless load developement?

I can't help with the light bullets.
If you want to "reach out there" you need the high BC bullets. My favorite in the 22-250AI is the Sierra 77gr with VV N165. In my Krieger barrel it is more accurate than any of the 80gr bullets, Berger, Sierra, or JLK.

Thanks guys I have been trying to get my hands on some VV powder for a while now finally located a supply I hope to have some by this weekend.
I have my ack. in my hands now and have just started to try and develop some loads I have been working with RL 15 basis the nosler manual, it is showing some promise. I am a little leery about using ball powders because of our extremes in temp. Velocity should be good because at the smith suggestion we added extra lenght to allow for set back if needed.

"at the smith suggestion we added extra lenght to allow for set back if needed."
This could be a good thing, or a bad thing depending on what we are talking about.
Extra length where??????

Jack I believe that a some was added to both ends of the barrel the shank end is I think 5 inches long before it starts to taper plus when the barrel was fluted he started 2 inches further away the overall lenght of the barrel is 29 inches. The idea is to allow rechambering. The barrel is a heavy varmint contour.

N-550 is the ticket for 55 and 60 gr. bullets in mine too.

Seems to me, you have fired mine, have you not, Albert?
If you don't remember, it's a 1 turn in 14", and I use H414 exclusively. I can't stabilize 70 grain bullets; 62-65 is exactly right, in my barrel. Also, we don't get the low temperatures you do, but I have never had a problem, down to the low digits with ball powder.
I think you should ask these ^guys what bullets they have tried, what gets the best accuracy, and what twist they are using.
I will offer my opinion that if you intend to use 55 grain bullets, you may not show much improvement over a standard 220 Swift, just much better case life. The case design can handle pressure better than the beefy Swift, which always needs to be trimmed when running it maxed out, because of the shoulder angle.
So, I suggest that you should find a heavier bullet that suits you, and leave it alone. Endless load development will leave you with not enough barrel life. If you can shoot the heavyweights, you are better off.
Think long and hard about your twist; it will dictate the bullet weights you will eventually use. How many hunting bullets are available in .224 that are over 55? If you decide on a target bullet, you should have a clear idea about the terminal effects. Ask everybody you know; who is using what, and especially their MV and twist. If you have to start a search from scratch, it can be a prolonged ordeal.
So, with that in mind, I have only two bullets that I have used, on predators. A Starke 65 and Berger 65. The Berger has a MV of 3925 and the Starke is 3950. You would be happy with the terminal performance of either of them. Oh yeah, forgot, the new Berger is now a 64 grain, but I haven't used it. But, I'm told (by predator hunters) that the performance is the same. With this cartridge, I'd be careful about using MEF or V-Max type bullets
Good luck. LB

Leonard: I would have starkes or bergers already except since 9/11 you need an export liscence to or gun stuff though the mail. In this case I have just taken the easy route and am going to try the 55 first I see that Rich uses 55 b.t. and Q uses 55 B.t and B.K in his swift which seems to perform at the velocitys that I am expecting.
P.S. I thought your gun had a 1 in 15 twist.
