Since the firearms section has been a little slow I figured I'd let you guys know about my new gun. I traded for a Taurus pistol in a 17 HMR. I got it on Monday and since I got it I have taken 1 big bobcat, 2 coyotes, 2 jackrabbits, and one porcupine. All but 1 jackrabbit were 1 shot kills. Those 17 HMR's are great!!!!

The coyotes and bobcat were all in traps, but it is a nice little trapping gun!

The 17 HMR is no doubt a tiny little cartridge, but has a lot of bang for the buck. I would never reccommend it for predators, but in the same breath, will tell you I have shot a bunch of coyotes with it last season. 14 to be exact, and two this year. I did have a runner or two, but that was with very poor hits, I would have expected the same results if I was using my 19 or 17 rem. Hits midship with anything but the big guns will usually see the coyote making a mad dash. 9 of the 16 fell unbelieveably hard, in fact I was taken aback by several. Some spun a turn or two, sprinted 15 yards, then fell down. It's an amazing little round, with way more potential to kill than most guys would imagine. Most all of my shots have been at moderate calling distances, 15-40 yards, the longest being a straight away runner, shot her at 68 yards, aiming at the root of the tail, hoping to anchor her ass end for a few seconds for a follow-up shot. This big female, when hit, literally went end over end in a somersault....turned out the little bullet hit her at the base of the skull.

I shot all the predators in traps at 20 or 30 feet and just wanted them dispatched neatly, but I have shot some jackrabbits out to 40 or 50 yards and even though this is a pistol I am talking about I got some expansion and it seems to put their lights right out.

I have no doubt that at the ranges you are talking and with a rifle that there is no problem killing a coyote. I can't imagine why there would be with a chest or head shot. But I'm sure if you started stretching the range a little eventually you wouldn't get any expansion. I would like to do a little testing with a 17 HMR rifle on jacks to see at what range you lose the expansion and start getting a 17 cal needle hole.

I have done a bit of testing with my 17 HMR, which is a Savage 93F. It shoots pretty good, 3 shot groups of about 3/4" at 100 yards.
I shot some 1/4" steel plate at about 15 yards. Both CCI and Hornady went right through it. I doubled it up at the same range and both bullet types came to rest in between the plates with a large dent on the other side.
I shot some 2 liter bottles filled with water at 265 yards. No challenge! The hole in the back of the bottle was about a 1" square. The polymer from the tip was still in the bottle.
I plan on doing newprint tests at 25, 50, 100 and 150 yards this week, I will keep you all posted.

Got to go with Vic on this one. A friend came on a 3 day hunt recently and brought his 17HMR. I watched with amazement as he downed coyote after coyote with shots from 20 to 125 yards with that little round! Most were under 100 yards, but I saw him shoot 2 coyotes at the 125 yard range. Both had to have a second shot to put it down for good,but they went down dead. Only one coyote had to have a second shot under the 100 yard range and that was just poor shot placement. 8 of the 15 or so coyotes are also on video. Most died just like they do with my 17 Rem.! I for one was amazed.

Interesting about the penetration through ¼" plate.
I'd be interested in knowing how it handles foxes, at fifty yards.

I'll tell you how, tomorrow Leonard. Taking off to hit mostly fox in the morning, and I just put the 17HMR in back of the truck. I think it will be just about perfect for fox, but Ive formed my opinion based on what Ive seen it do, or not do, to coyotes. Hopefully I can call in several to see how the performance is.

Thanks, Jeff (KrustyKlimber) showed me this BB. I go to lots of other places and this one looks good, mostly because it is no BS.
The 17 HMR with the Hornady ammo was leaving a 3/8" hole in the 1/4" steel and the CCI was leaving one slightly smaller, but only about 1/10" smaller. I personally don't like the CCI ammo, because it was designed to "Make Weight" and not for expansion. The tip just shears off when it hits something because there is nothing to start the expansion.

If the board works for you, the reason may be that we have a very good group of knowledgable members. And, I'm just like the rest; no computer weenie, here. I hunt these critters, and like to think that I know what makes the average predator hunter tick. The focus is narrow, no archery forum, no deer hunting stuff. You can get that just about anywhere.
