While out shooting the 222 today this strange hole appearred. I was shooting a pretty nice group when this bullet hole cropped up. The bullets I am shooting are hornady 50gr SX. Fired 10 more rounds after this that was basically one ragged hole. Make ya stop and wonder.

You key-holed it. The end of the barrel moved just as the bullet base was leaving the barrel causing it to tumble. Did it make a buzz sound?

Usually only see that with barrels that are either shot out, or horribly copper fouled. Also see it with too slow of a twist, but that sure ain't the case here. Deuce isn't known for wearing out barrels, or loading up with copper, so my WAG is a bad bullet. Now that I think about it, a wild pressure/velocity event might do it too. Did the shot sound different, any trouble opening the bolt or anything?

My first WAG is a bad bullet. But, they should all do the same thing, if the twist were a problem? The SX has velocity limitations that you would probably not exceed in 222.

How many rounds through your barrel?

I think Jack Roberts might know what's going on? It may be that your barrel is toast, and this is the first of many?

Good luck, LB

It is usually a bad barrel, either worn or fouled, or too long a bullet for the twist. However in this case, my money is on a bad bullet.

The same thing DAA and Leonard said.

I concure with Jack. This is a Shilen barrel that has lots of life in her, no where near shot out. The group I shot with it will attest to that. I am thinking that the lead core in the SX was missing or not complete. Just enough to get the bullet unstable. Nice conversation piece. I started with a very clean barrel and this was the 4th bullet out. Fired 15 more, no problems.

14 good shots from a proven barrel. I bad.

Not the crown.

Not the bore.

Not the load.

My 2 cents. Bad extrusion on one bullet. Most likely a cavity, Sending in into a yaw when it left the barrel.

What Ronnie said. LB

PS send it back! [Smile]

More seriously, though; I'd not use any from that box of bullets for hunting. A long shot, but for the price, and the fact that those are primarily hunting bullets, I'd be leary.

A few years ago I had the same problem. The gun shot perfect until the box of bad bullets. All the jacket was thick on one side the other side was .001- .002 thick. If you looked close you could see the lead on the side of some of the bullets.I cut and polished the bullets and returned them to the factory. They made it right.

I'm kinda surprised that it even stayed on the paper w/ a tumble like that going..
