Hey all!
A friend from work brought me on my first hunt today. He brought a .243 and a .270 ... We hunted where Hwy 15 intersect the 138 (here in CA).
There was a lot of burned brush from last year's fire. He had brought an electric call as well as a range-finder. It was HOT out there, even though we set out at 6:30 am.
We called 4 stands at about 20-30 min each. Most of the time was spent hiking. We killed nothing today, though we heard a coyote behind us run off into the brush. I guess the coyote came in from behind our stand and winded us ![[Frown]](frown.gif)
The .243 is a Remington 700 BDL and the .270 is a pre-64 Winchester 70. Both had wood stocks and Leopold's Vari-XIII 2.5-8X40. He told we that he had the triggers worked on to break at 3 lbs.
I can't believe the acuracy form these two rifles! With the .243, I was able to hit grapefruit-sized rocks at 250 and 400 yards. I split another rock of the same size at 450 yards with the .270. He said he had the rifles set to shoot 3" high at 100 yds.
From a previous thread, I was thinking about a 22-250. Now the .243 is gnawing at my conscience and the .270 is wanting a piece of my mind....
Both rifles seemed to have recoiled alike, that is, the difference was not great.
Are there any out there that hunt coyotes with these calibers? If so, how do you like them?

Cool Neil! If you want a dual purpose(game/varmint) rifle a .243 will serve you well.If your looking for strictly a varmint rifle Id go with the.22-250.
You can get lightweight bullets for the .243 though (55-60 grain)that will really sing.

The .243 is definately more versatile. I've shot deer, coyotes, badgers, prairie dogs, a blue grouse once, and even a cute little bighorn sheep with mine.

But then again, I suppose anyone could of used a .454 on any of those critters if he'd been so inclined to. Yet the .243 is a very big "little bullet", I mean a very little "big bullet."
