OK I'm lookin for some imput/thoughts on both of these new chamberings.
The one that interests me the most is the .223 WSSM. They are billing it as the one that will out perform the 22-250 by 200 fps or better, with less presure and a 1/2 inch shorter bolt travel.
I spoke with a friend who works for Randy Brooks at Barnes bullets this afternoon. He's been testing the chambering and says that they are one of the most accurite rounds that he's tested in the last 5 years and he told me that he is building one on a Rem mod 7 action. He will come up and hunt with me after Valentines day and said he will have it up and runnin by then.
What are your thoughts guys? and don't sugar coat it either... LOL

Well, you know, sly. Those chamberings are so new to me that I haven't actually handled either of them. I will say that there is really no vast need, and as they say; firearms is a "mature" market. Meaning that everybody that wants one, already has one, so you have to convince them that they need a brand new model, if you want to make any money.
The shape reminds me of a 22PPC and 6PPC on steroids. Short and fat turns some people on, but others like long and tall. They would say less feeding problems, but the short fat crowd would counter with bolt thrust and efficient burning, less stretching.
Personally, I don't mind a medium length action, especially when some manufacurers use blocking in the magazine, and the action length is the same.
I hope it turns out to be revolutionary, we need a great new introduction or two.
Good hunting. LB

I think they are going to be good cartrdiges. Personally, I'm more excited about new shorter actions than the cartridges themselves. But I kind of doubt Remington is going to make any new actions for them, so...

Dave, I reread what I wrote, and it doesn't convey what I was thinking at the time. What I meant to say is that I don't like a short round in a medium length magazine. They are either too sloppy or too confined. As with Winchester, they block the magazine in the rear, so that you still have to work a full length medium bolt. The bonus you might expect, the ability to seat heavy, long bullets (properly) without sacrificing case capacity, isn't possible.

Leonard and DAA,
Ol'Grandad always said it will come out in the wash. I think it will take a hell of a cartridge to beat out the 22-250 and win over the die hards. My 2 cents is maybe after it proves its self (if it can) as a contender, and only then, as I see it, will the big three redesigh or build new actions for those chamberings.
I'm with you Leonard, in that I like the long and tall chamberings. Just because, I was wondering if you have shot or played with the 20 cal. stuff, and if so, what do you think.(truth) I know you like the 22-250 and so do I, but eversince I shot my 1st yote with a 20 they are what I reach for all the time now. I truly am lost without'em, My only complaint is that there ain't no bullets out there. The 33 v-max and the 36 Berger and thats it for now. I do know for a fact that there are some comming out real soon. Anyway I just wanted to pick yer brain a little and I value your input greatly. Do you ever get this way or have you thought about getting lost for a couple days to Smote a Yote up in Idaho? Just drop me a e-mail and I'll take ya anytime, for sure and certian.
I live to Smote the Yote

I understood you Leonard. I think maybe what I was thinking didn't come across as clearly. Agree completely with the cartridge length vs. action length.
As far as new actions being designed and built for these cartridges, that is already a reality and that is what I was referring too. Browning/Winchester has been saying all along that there will be totally new shorter actions to go with these new rounds. I've got nothing "against" Model 70 actions, I own a couple and they work very well. But, they aren't the platform I'd choose for a high performance varmint rifle. And I really do doubt that the other mfg's will be very quick to follow suit with new actions of their own for "somebody elses" new cartridge. On the other hand, Rem. already has the Model Seven, with a magnum bolt face, and I'm not too big on factory barrels anyway. But then you have the issue of feeding, could be a real bugaboo in actions not purpose built for the WSSM's - they have a geometry unlike any factory offering we've seen before. A lot of guys have been building very similar wildcats for years, using shortened Jeffrey cases, but those are all single shot only propositions.

Dave, I follow your line of reasoning, completely.
Sly, thanks for the invite. I do get up there once in a while, never know when?
