I'm seeing an ad for a Silver Dog Howler and for some reason it seems somewhat sorta familiar. Didn't someone here make those at one time ??? ![[Confused]](confused.gif)

Our old friend, Rich Higgins made a custom cow horn howler. He gave them to friends and some people prevailed on his generosity. In other words they begged, just for the status. And Rich was generous, making howlers for nervy people that asked. I have no idea how many were given as gifts and how many were made for people that just had to have something special, and had no shame in asking, only never to be used and forgotten, in at least one instance that I heard about. The one I own was a gift and I treasure it.

edit: They aren’t silver. I believe he uses chromium cobalt. He has a business making dental appliances to impressions sent by dentists. [ August 12, 2025, 10:52 PM: Message edited by: Leonard ]

Ok .................. Had to locate Jay's book. We recently had new flooring put in and all of the bookcases had to be moved. Somehow the books didn't go back in the neat and orderly way they were before. Still haven't found a book I have on Zen Poetry. Anyway ......... According to The Book, Silver Dog Howlers are / were made by a guy name of Steve Nordstrom up in Colorado and are spoken of rather highly.
We now return you to our regularly scheduled programing.

So….just a guess, as you, (ko ko) seem to monitor Ebay either frequently , or occasionally. I’m assuming this is where you saw a “silver howler”?
It was a few years ago when I heard a similar report about a Higgins howler that was either offered, or sold for $150.
I can’t remember the model that is the original, that Higgins copied? But it may have been Primus?
To use a Higgin Howler, you usually have to buy a pair of latex gloves and cut the fingers into bands about 3/4ths inch wide. certain fingers sound better than others. The thumb is not useful. And, you would be advised to have spares, they do not last long. It’s not bad though, because it’s a unique sound.

Yeah, eBay is where I spend money I don't have on stuff I don't need. Every once in a while I'll check in on 'varmint call' just to see what's listed. I also watch 'archery collectable', the arrow size I like, Frank Frazetta, archery book, etc.

You are marvelous, Amigo!
I looked at Ebay once and was immediately flummoxed by different types of secret bids and strategy. Too deep for this kid!

eBay has improved greatly and is pretty simple to use, as evidenced by the fact that even with my own remedial computer skills I'm able to use it and use it often.
The next time you have computer savvy family or friends visiting have them walk you thru the process and I think that you would find it really useful.

Brent Saxton made howlers also but that was over 15 years ago. I think (and I very well could be wrong) his were a copy off of Higgins. They were excellent howlers and used fingers from latex gloves for the reed.
I never heard of the Silver Dog howler.

Yeah, me neither? Once you do your due diligence, even Herb’s Howlers, (I have one of his originals) they all sound similar, and that’s more or less. I have a Johnny Stewart that is particularly LOUD, so that’s a feature that has some merit, until you get into the electronics that amplify pretty good.
But, face it, much about the Higgin’s effort is cosmetic, the craftsmanship, it’s a work of art, when you get right down to it, is what you have. And UNIQUE.

That’s it! I think you have identified the original, at least the concept that Higgins used. But his are all dressed up with the Chromium Cobalt casting that he artfully applies to the cow horn. This cannot be duplicated. It may not function any different than the ELK, but it’s a lot more snazzy.
PS where have you been, Tim? don’t tell me working, building roads. That’s no excuse.

As for silver dog howler its just a horn howler and little higher pitched. Maybe like a Cronk howler or spin off from it.
I did a google on this call to make sure we on same page, yep just like i remembered nothing fancy. [ August 16, 2025, 11:16 AM: Message edited by: TA17Rem ]

Makes sense ............. I hear that they have only two seasons up there in Mini-Soda; Winter & Construction.
Edit to add important insights;
He's not working at Lake Crystal ........... He's working at Camp Crystal Lake !!!!! Has ANYONE EVER seen Tim and Jason Voorhees together in the same room ???? Tim ...... How many hockey masks do you own ??? We know that you spend a lot of time at night roaming around in the dark !!!! And a heavy equipment operator !!!! What better way to hide bodies than with a bulldozer ????

Don’t feel insignificant, ko ko.
I believe you could get away calling yourself a heavy equipment operator, maybe even better ‘cause it’s got forks! lol
I’m betting that you’ve never set foot in “The Land of Skyblue Waters” ….n/mudflaps! And Paul Bunyan, and Babe, the Blue Ox.
I’m determined….wait! I was going to say, determined on visiting the land of my birth; someday! Or, determined to never set foot in Minnesota, if I can help it! I don’t need no skeeter bites, neither. Has it stopped snowing yet? ❄️ Those were the days! How does it feel to have such a jerk off governor?

If I ever win the Lotto (not likely 'cause I don't play it) I think that one of the first things I would have to have is one of those little Bobcat tractor / bulldozers. No idea why I would need one but they just seem over the top cool !!! ![[Cool]](cool.gif)

Minnesota has five seasons' boys. Have not been bit by skeeter in long time. I run Excavators Koko, 345 CAT and up. At one time I ran 6 Kalion mines for company, almost anything can be buried at bottom of them. Either they filled with water or reclaimed and fill back with dirt. who going to pay to dig one out and look for a object of concern? Hockey, never played ot or watched much of a game, no interest to me. good day aye!
FYI it takes 48-58 pounds of cement block to hold a 200 pound body down at bottom of a lake, can be little less but don't want have chance of a floater. ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif) [ August 16, 2025, 04:49 PM: Message edited by: TA17Rem ]

So ............. A couple standard cinder blocks should do the trick. Good to know if the question ever comes up in a Trivial Pursuit game.

Yeah, and Scott Peterson is taking notes! His homemade anchors seemed to work but as the body bloated and appendages wore and broke off and the body floated….he shouldn’t have picked San Francisco Bay! It’s average about 6 foot deep and the wind will drift a body to the Oakland side, where there is a walk along the shore and the same day a body washes up somebody is biking or jogging along the path. What an idiot! He used his parking stub from the marina to prove he was “fishing” for sturgeon, with trout tackle?
Scott, we love ya, man! But you be stupid! He’s got female fans, makes him a real operator in San Quentin! He might be able to look out a cell window and watch both bodies float to shore. No windows in cells? Okay, then while walking in the yard. San Quinton is a very prominent feature on the north side of San Francisco Bay. Yet, they still have boat rides to take tourists for a look at Alcatraz. Now, why is that terrific tourist attraction going to waste when they could dress it up with a fresh coat of paint and reinvent a famous prison that once held Al Capone! There’s money to be made and trump is looking in to it now, even as I type this!
So, where were we? Yes, Cinder blocks are 2 buck each. Why do that when you can cast your own in a coffee can? Scott’s on top of this stuff. Just like our boy, Brian Kohberger, who brings a knife sheath to a murder site.

As screwy as the world has become, Alcatraz could be turned into a prison bed & breakfast tourist attraction and generate big $$$$
The t-shirt sales alone would likely cover operating costs.
