I am looking for a new GPS for my truck. I want to be able to insert the maps of other states like NM with the BLM and other gov't/public lands shown because everyone knows all the coyotes are gone from AZ, I think Vic killed them all.
Seriously, I am wanting to hunt some closer areas and just experiment in other areas. Anyone have any fav's they want to share? Not really looking for a handheld model, but won't rule them out.

Two years ago I spent $100 on a Garmin nuvi 225. It's been a great basic GPS. Last fall I spent the same amount on a Hunting GPS Maps micro SD card for it. Mine's the Montana version with all BLM, state, forest service land with land owner names (within the last year) on the sections they own. Together they're the best money I've ever spent.

The one I use, has been discontinued for awhile, I think. It's a Garmin 276C.
Which, was marketed as a marine chart plotter, not a vehicle GPS. But it suited my purposes best of any GPS unit on the market, at that time.
I haven't looked into current offerings in a couple of years and these things change a lot, so I'm pretty clueless on the state of the market. But I'd probably start with the Garmin chart plotters again.
Things that matter to me most - buttons. I like real buttons. NOT touch screens. Buttons are way easier to use while moving over washboard at speed. And touch screens always end up a greasy, finger print stained, dust gather, dust scratched, ugly mess.
Good maps are the most important. Don't know the current state of affairs. But as of a few years ago, this meant Garmin and really nobody else, for my area of operations. I really like the Lowrance HDS GPS units, but when I was last shopping, their maps for my AO sucked ass...

I have limited access now and for most of the summer but will weigh in a bit cause I use these tools a lot. I'd agree with Brad and go simple.Stay with Garmin and the Nuvi's are very hard to beat in a vehicle.I now use the Nuvi 1450 with assorted chips from various companies. The best I've found for the States I hunt come from http://www.koutdoorproducts.com/ These show all public land, owner info in some States and are EXCELLENT and spot on for the most part. They are color coded as well.If you have Q's you can call the owner,Steve Hirsch and he'll walk you through any issues. He's also a BIG Garmin fan both in handhelds and vehicle models.I use his chips in my vehicle and handheld models. Some States, unfortunately mine,South Dakota, will not provide the info to private companies in an easy format. In those,or at least some like South Dakota, one can get a download from the State Game/Fish Dept that will give you the same land info with annual updates.South Dakotas is very good and again the simple Garmin Nuvis handle it well. When hunting in Canada,it's been a different thing for me.There, for assorted reasons,I use a Lowrance hand held ('I Finder' Hunt model)with 'Freedom Maps' which are area/Province specific. These topos are excellent and spot on from my experience. The Lowrance 'plotters' mentioned are still excellent but are unnecessary in a vehicle IMO.With the simple Garmins you can still mark spots(waypoints etc),navigate, whatever. In a boat,a much different deal.I have 2 HDS plotters on my boat. The maps, satellite overlays, aerials, etc available there are frankly unbelievable. In just one of my HDS models I have much more info and computing power than the battleship Missouri had when it carried McArthur to Tokyo Bay to accept the Jap surrender. I'm at Lake Of The Woods now.One million acres,65,000 miles of shoreline,14,000 islands and lord knows how many thousands of underwater navigation hazards. When I learned it 40 yrs ago,we barely had maps. Now,with Navionic and Lakemaster 'chips',99.9 % of even the underwater hazards are marked and show as you travel.(unfortunately making idiots feel like pros and cheapening the whole experience IMO) The thing to remember though, except perhaps for satellite imagery,is all of this info is stored, positioned, packaged by man. Thus there are errors!!!!For instance on Lake Of The Woods, some hazards are NOT marked, some that are,are mis- marked and occasionally while 'navigating',the plotter will show your boat crossing an island. Not good if you don't 'know' where you really are. Cause man is involved, carry compass, real maps, and common sense. Also,if a 'Smart phone' person, one can likely do all of this with that unit including satelite imagery with GPS overlay either via internal options on the phone or 'Apps' such as that available through 'Scoutlook'that will even tell you where your 'scent cone' is going based on your stand position.Welcome to the F ed up 'new world'. Good hunting!

I bought 2 garmin nuvi 50lm in Nov balck Friday sale. They have been perfect w/all my land use SD cards & big enough to see/read vs the 4" ones. I also have a 276t 4" garmin, older & disc. but its still going strong and I like that I can remove all of them and carry out in the field.
