Krustyklimber prefers the bunny hugger pronunciation: ky o tee Member # 72 posted February 24, 2013 10:27 PM                    I finally made myself a call; It's made from the mesquite wood Bob Addy sent me, beautifully figured, though it had some cracks in it that I had to stabilize with CA (super-glue). The bell is so thin that I can't, in good conscious, let it go (*since I don't think it could be engraved without blowing through it). Or squeeze it too hard. Or, change out the battery compartment. One thing I will say; mesquite is possibly the best choice for a predator call. Good hunting. It would be cool if it worked. Sitting on it would definitely kill it. So what is it about mesquite that makes you like it best? Lonehowl, Thanks. Hey I have a small piece I would like to have made from delrin. Kokopelli, I was considering just having it engraved, and if need be filling it in with inlay, but I already finished the call. But, I am interested in finding out if a finished call could be protected, from the vaporized material put off by the laser, by using a layer of blue masking tape. No better call, than one I intend to keep anyway, to sacrifice to the cause... so I'll do it. Thanks for the encouragement. Smithers, I'm not thrilled with the reed set I made for this... but I can always change it. Having not hunted much over the last few years, I can't seem to find a distress sound I like, on stand, so I'm struggling a bit. I bought an E.L.K. howler last year, and I like it, but I need to buy some thicker nitrile gloves to make new reeds for it *than the cheap ones I bought at Harbor Freight for finishing calls. The few coyotes there are, in this part of Virginia, are every bit as silent as the ones back home though, so I am also struggling with whether or not howling is beneficial to a stand. I spent the better part of a month attempting to locate, by howling, and never got a single reply. Foxes don't seem to care, if I howl of not, though, so I definitely don't see it as detrimental... but I wonder (*and I still tend to over-think my predator hunting ...way too often). For many years, Weatherby used mesquite for their stocks on the Mark V. I think it is the most appropriate for a predator call, me being a traditionalist whenever possible. Good hunting. Thanks. Marc, I'll e-mail a pdf with a drawing of what I need... it's a "shroud" for the end of my airgun barrel, to cover up the ugliness that was hidden under the hooded blade front sight. I put a scope, on low rings, on it and the hooded sight caused the scope to blur (or flare if the sun shined on it) so I had to remove it. Let me know what you need for it. Bear, All the calls I intend to keep get a coat of clear sealer/stain and then a coat or two of polyurethane, per usual, but once that's dry I rub them down with fine steel wool. I hate super-glossy calls. Tim and I have created more than enough internet fodder, to last a while... and Tim is obviously more than willing to continue to carry that torch. To get their hands on this call, like one other call in the past, one would have to make me an offer I can't refuse. Tim cannot make me such an offer, ever again. "Fool me once, shame on you. With the old loose band, I could get a real nice wheezing, frantic sound that appealed to me. The tighter band cleaned the sound up too much, for my taste. The sound with the tight band was crisp and clean, instead of raw and dirty, like with the tired old one. It sounded like a half dozen other open reed calls I own. So, I changed it back to loosey-goosey. It's the little things. The coyotes are looking for raw and dirty, not crisp and refreshing. Quite a few seasons ago the `Yote-Buster` was my favorite'est call in the whole wide world. The coyotes in S.E. Ore. seemed to like it, too. Then one day I noticed (Gasp) the end of the reed was cracked & chipped and not even close to factory spec. Long story less long, I got some new reeds and that call never sounded quite `right` again. By the next season I had a different favorite'est call in the whole wide world. -------------------- And lo, the Light of the Trump shown upon the Darkness and the Darkness could not comprehend it.
