I am looking at upgrading my howler. I am satisfied with the sound my Elk Inc.Power Howler makes, but have trouble being consistent with it. I am very consistent with open reed howlers. I have a Critter Call Standard that I use some and a Primos Li'l dog. I just dont think that they sound quite as realistic as I would like. Who makes a good cowhorn or buffalo horn open reed howler. I have looked at the Tony Tebbe howler and like it. Does anyone have suggestions? It doesn't have to be a custom made howler, just very realistic. Let me know your preferences and opinions.

I have a good cow horn model that I have had advertised on California board for awhile. 65.00 includes postage.

It wont let me see the pic without registering....

It amazes me how may predator boards there are? I only know of 4 and one I refuse to even go to. Although LB says I have to if Im going to be a certified Humpmaster. [Big Grin]

Those horns I got are about a foot long and have a curl in them. Pretty cool looking. I dont know how functional it will be? But Im going to shine them up and maybe do some design on them, not sure yet. I dont know if I want to use a reed like you do or a power howler like Higgins does? Gotta think on that a bit.

Anyhow, if you got a pic, post it here.

Andy,
If you have been to P.M. in last few years, I'm sure you know that there are a LOT of guys in to call making now. My competition is unbelievable.

I know Rich, I was just being a smartass. Seems everyones a callmaker these days. Few do it well. IMHO

Im not going into business. I just thought it would be neat to make one or two. Something to do on snowy days in the man cave.

Now THAT is the gosh awful truth. Brad Holzer makes dandy howlers from buffalo horn, and Jerry Hunsley has some dandy little howlers he has injection molded. I can't honestly recommend that anyone go to those other guys for howlers because I have not tried them myself. Tony Tebbe probably makes a halway decent howler by now also, but since I haven't tried one---- well you know what I am saying. You being a smart ass? Naw, that couldn't be. [Big Grin]

Yeah,I've been using Jerry Hunsley's "Wileyone" howler for a few years now.I love the high pitched howls it makes.Very realistic sounds for sure. And a great price to boot.I am probably going to get one of his open reed jack rabbit calls real soon too...

Mr. Cronks Howlers have no competition. They are simply the best.
Bearmanricks are good, Higgins are good, lots are good. I really like bearmans BUT
I am sorry to say because of hurting anyones feelings however,
There is no substitute. You must learn to use a Cronk, but once you do....

I've got to admit, I've got an OLD Cronk howler, it's damn near as OLD and UGLY as it's maker. It spent the summer out in the desert sun, rain and heat, but still work perfect ! [Big Grin]

Tim Behle,
I had forgotten about you leaving that howler out in the weather like that. LOL How many years ago was that? If I ever decide to do television commercials, I will need your old howler for it. Sort of a Timex type commercial ya see. [Big Grin]

Forget it OLD man, they may put the Howler on TV, but they would never put two UGLY OLD things in the same commercial !

Hell, they'd break sixteen lenses trying just to get a shot at you ! [Big Grin]

Andy,

Your Krusty Krier is somewhat unique, in that it has a single reed.
Most have double-stacked reeds, which aren't really suited to howling (in my opinion).

And, while I send a spare single reed, I don't feel the trade off of losing the distress sounds one can make with the double reeds is worth it.

Baldknobber,

Like Rich, Since I haven't tried any of Tony's work, I won't express any opinion of it.

I've also never tried an E.L.K. howler or mouthpiece driven horn howler.

Bofire's got a buffalo horn Cronk howler, that's the smoothest and best sounding howler I've ever tried.

BradH is another that I really like, excellent sound, and FLAMES!

Many call makers use Yellowdog's toneboards, and those are excellent choices (*I'm not sure if Lee himself does any work with horn, but his "YD somethin' er other" howler is definitely worth a look).

"My competition is unbelievable."

Rich,

That's one of those great lines, like when Vic says "that's incredible"...

It could be interpreted so many ways. [Big Grin]

Andy, Just do like Carlton does; buy calls from Bodicker & put your own logo on them.
You do have a logo........don't you?? Can't be a star without a logo.

I've been called worse...much worse. Frequently. In fact, according to some sources, you just gave me enough reason to ban your ass! [Smile]

Just kidding, of course. But, of the three or four that have got it recently, they all know exactly why. I'm not looking for sympathy, but it is obvious that they are. tsk tsk
Oh, just remembered one, oodles of wit and charm but mainly, just plain UGLY.

Don't worry, although you are no beauty queen, I like your style....for some reason? [Smile] (must insert smilie for google)

Good hunting. LB
