Jerry,
I have been selling reed material... I had to buy a large lot of it (still A LOT cheaper then the CritR Call replacement pack) and I have a fair share of it left.
If your buddy gets ahold of me, I will give him some samples to work with. When he decides he needs a larger supply, I sell 6" x 6" sheets (in several thicknesses and materials) for $1 each.
I'd also be glad to help with the building/tuning proccess too, like I said over on the other site... any friend of yours, is a friend of mine!

Krusty, don't worry, I was just poking at you. I thought you were still on probation? (more poke)
Around here, I can think of at least four sources for thermoplastic sheet goods. Lexan, UHMW, polycarbonate etc. I could dig through their dumpsters...come to think of it, I have! Some stuff is a lot more durable than others, I suppose you would have to grind the shape, rather than cut with a razor blade? Then, it's all experimental.
The call that Krusty made for me has a double reed, and he keeps them separated with small dimples. Interesting.
Gerald Stewart told me once, that he was having some trouble with reed material for his howler, made from flat stock. I believe he now injection molds his reeds with a taper? Another interesting solution, not available to most of us.
Good luck with all your hobby projects, LB

Leonard,
It's all good in da hood! I was poking some fun of my own....
Ya know, I figure I am pretty much on probation on any site I visit... at any given time I can "go off" on a subject or topic, feverishly enough to get banned from a lot of sites. I am just me.
I finally got tired of skating thin ice, and I don't post so much anymore... but I am still a ticking time bomb. LOL (I got a couple things festering in my craw right now *snicker).
The double stacked reed system is not my idea, nor is it new. Waterfowlers have been using the doubled reeds for a very long time, and I adapted it from and old P.S. Olt D-115 voice I converted into a predator call (just as am experiment). Without the dimple saliva would "glue" the reeds together, and kill the sound. The pair of reeds is actually super glued together at the stop end, to keep them aligned and from being lost/seperated.
Major Boddicker recommends sanding a taper into the tip of the reed, on some of the materials he sells in his replacement packs (there's some interesting stuff in there, but not much of it that useful).
I make my reeds, no matter which material by cutting it with scissors and sanding them to final shape (many times, until I get the pitch I am looking for, then I do the topreed). Cal taught me, that a tiny bevel at the edge of a reed helps it a lot, it allows the air to sneak back under the reed during oscilation. And way back when Brad and I learned it was also a safety issue, when I cut my lip on one of Brad's early reeds. A razor cut leaves a sharp edge. A piece of 400 grit sandpaper is perfect for the task of cleaning up a reed, after final shaping is done.

Ya know Leonard... it really is nice to know I can talk freely and openly here, without having to pay $50!!! I mentioned I make calls... ![[Eek!]](eek.gif) [ May 23, 2004, 11:19 AM: Message edited by: Krustyklimber ]

One thing I have in common with the "black board" is that I don't accept commercial advertising. Every call maker, even the most obscure, has equal access. The system seems to work. So far, no one has abused the privilege, in any catagory.
