I have a JS512, and when I put a tape in it, the red led light starts to blink, and the tape will not play. I suspect I need new batteries, but do any of you know what this is?

I had that happen in my old one a lot. It meant the battery didn't have enough power to turn the tape, or the tape was stuck. Will it work if plugged into the wall, or with a different tape?

My 512 is getting on about eighteen years old and has sat in the corner for about fifteen of them because of the very same problem. I figured that the battery was shot and just never got around to getting a new one, and good thing I didn't. Because that's not necesarily your problem. I recently stopped by a guy's shop where he was cussing his 512 (same thing). he put in anew battery and the problem still existed. They tested his old battery and the new one - turns out the old one held charge better than the new one. Long story less long, there's a bunch of little doohickleys in there, one of whih puts tension on the tape when it plays, that gets out of adjustment. My friend took mine, tweaked it here and tyhere, and tested the battery. The battery is fine and now it works like a champ, exceptin' for a slightly loose belt. If you know someone that knows how to adjust a tape recorder's guts, I bet they can fix it for you in less than thirty seconds. If not, I'll try to get with my buddy, take a pic of the guts and point out what needs what done to it.

Bruce, does the light on the machine blink when you fast forward to get to the end of the tape so that you can turn it over for the next stand? I think they can be a little fussy when you push the tape down.

In any case, I'm sure that you can send it to Gerald and he will turn it around very quickly. In the meantime;

Leonard, just in case of things like this, I have a second JS512. The thing of it is, when I put the remote on this unit, it will not play. Take the remote off, and a tape will play. I moved the remote to the second unit, and all is well.

It almost looks as if there is not enough power in the batteries to run the remote and the tape player.

Heck, I don't know. [Big Grin]

Take care.

That might be something different, Bruce?

I'm thinking that there are a few dip switches inside the remote, and they can operate on different frequencies. Did it work properly, before?

Hell, I don't know, either? LB

Leonard, yep, it worked great before. I moved the remote to the 2nd JS512 and it works just fine.

Take care.

Bucksnort, it usually means that you need to apply the charger to the unit for a while.

If it plays with out the remote, and not with it, one might wonder if it is a cross wire challenge...

I know someone that applied the remote, but couldnt get any sound... duh... plug the speaker wire in!!!

Good luck

Now Norm, my good friend, duh, duh, I do know how to plug the speaker wire in, as I have been doing it for several years. If I can get the 2nd unit to work, I should be able to get the 1st unit to work. [Big Grin]

As always, I do appreciate your help with more words than I can describe.

Take care.

Bucksnort; I was not suggesting that you would have your wires crossed or anything... nor was I suggesting that you may have not made all the connections...

I was just offering some experiences that I have seen in years past...

Norm, I have had my wires "crossed" more than I am willing to share. [Big Grin]
