Just curious as to whether or not anyone here has built their own portable varmint shooting bench? I'm looking to make something relatively light-weight and collapsable if possible and would love some ideas. If anyone knows of any websites I should check, please feel free to mention.

Thanks in advance,
Kendall

Here's one I've been using for five or six years now.

 -

It's just a plywood top, with "banquet table legs". I got the legs off a table from a junk pile. But I've seen them at hardware stores for less than $20. You can see where I bolted on some angle iron running lengthwise. That stiffened up the whole works considerably, without adding much weight. The blocking under the legs was to get more height.

Not sure what it weighs, but it's easy to carry in one hand. Takes less than ten seconds to set up. Stable enough to allow holding groups around 1/3 MOA. Killed a lot of colony varmints at over 500 yds. off it.

DAA,

What kind of rings are those? How do you like them?

They look like Kelbey's, from here? Very versatile, and light weight. What do you think of that "mural" he has on that stock? Pretty cool, eh?

Good hunting. LB

edit: if I were to build a bench, I'd try to figure out a way to use three legs, but what Dave has is a great solution, no doubt.

Yup, those are Kelbley rings alright. The 30mm variety, I've had absolutely no complaints with them. Bases are custom - milled in place on the reciever.

Leonard,

Take a look at this thread. I am thinking about making one for myself.

Shooting bench

A friend of mine has one of these.

It's 14# with a carry strap. And it's a great rest to shoot from!

Hey, I like the format of the Long Range Board. lol Never looked at it before, thanks.

Schedule 80 2½ and 3" pipe is stout enough, no doubt? But, even if you compromised, and settled for rigid aluminum conduit....hell I don't know? Lot's of ways to go, especially if you use whatever's handy. But, I get your point, they seem to like the tripod effect, huh?

Good hunting. LB

Leonard,

Len runs a good board. Lots of good information there for those who like to shoot a little further than the rest. But it's been getting a little too big the last few months. Do a search there for "shooting bench" and you should come up with plans for about 20 different styles. Including one chain driven metal bench that only costs about $500 plus shipping.

Three legs are going to be the most stable you can get. I'm going to have to get busy and build one for myself soon.
