Next week we go to bear camp...

I wanna know if you were calling bears with an e-caller would you use a continuous calling, on for ten minutes and quiet for ten, or 30 seconds or so of calling and then a few mintes of silence?

Thanks in advance, I won't reply unless anyone has some questions of me.

Leonard, I have heard the same about bear calling, keep it going. Years ago when I worked at a pack station, I called in a couple bears with hand calls. Don't remember much about it except I didn't want nothing to do with em lol. I've been thinking about trying that bear cub distress in the local mountians this fall. Who knows? it sounds like it would work, Good Hunting.

If cold calling call continuously. If spot & call you can play the off & on game depending on response. Bears seem to loose attention fast if there are long sound breaks especially if you are using prey or food calls. If using a cub in distress then anything can happen and be ready for a wild time. Tends to agitate the critters. Atleast that is what I've experienced.

Down there how are the meat & hide this time of year? We don't usually mess with blacks now as the hides are not in the best of shape though the meat can still be fine if it isn't too hot. Usually a fall/spring thing and our season is open year round with a 3 bear limit on blacks. Grizz unfortunately does have a season and is closed in July/Aug in my units and is closed right now.

Good luck & have fun.

Leonard,

The song we have in mind is a recording of one of the custom bear calls Mr. Cronk recently made (I am waiting to hear back if we have permission to hunt over it, it was sent to me so I could attempt to make a call that sounded similar)

I have no idea how he went about getting that sound from a call, I can make em, but I don't yet have the skills needed to produce a custom sound like that.

Danny,

I will be sure to let you know how that sound works for us... I am glad I'll be up in a tree! [Wink]

John,

I hope I am ready! [Eek!] I'll make sure I got clean shorts! [Big Grin]

As for the fur I dunno nothing about it, but it has been an unusually dry and hot summer, I can't imagine they are prime.

Down here we get two bears (only one from eastern Wa.), both over the counter tags, and we have an Aug. 1 through Nov. 15 season (with a short spring season (application) on the far side of the state)

Thanks one, and all, for the help.

Krusty,
You have my permission to use that sound if you want to. Just don't blame me if you end up getting ate by a bear. [Smile] I send disclaimers out with each of my BEAR calls.

LOL Thanks Rich,

But the sound I have, I got from the owner of said Cronk Call...

I am still awaiting permission from him. [Wink]
But if you wanted to send samples of what you have I'd be glad to compare, and mix them together.

As always you'd be entitled to a copy for your own use.
Lipsqueek Duet is one of the other sounds I will be using, I hope to hunt for coyotes too, when I am not watchin' Red's back.
We saw a lot of coyote sign when we went scouting last week.

Krusty, the man with the screen name: "Rich" is the REAL, the one and only, Rich Cronk.

He gave you permission, son. Don't mess it up.

Good hunting. LB

Leonard,

While Rich is the real Rich, and the maker of the call that made the sound... he did not make the sound I have right now...

The young man, up here in Washington, who consigned RC to make him the call is the one who sent it to me. [Wink]

You guys wouldn't believe how awesome the call sounds! I get the willies just hearing it... it has got to rile 'em up good!
Rich's talent at coming up with a sound upon request, is what seperates him from the rest of us amateur call makers!

P.S. I was surfing on my boss' time... your call is in my pack, I worked on it at the bus stop this morning...

Bo,

So glad to see ya here!

Not hiding... just this is the only board left that doesn't belong to someone else, or they haven't asked me to leave...

It's all the best guys here anyway, and I didn't have time for a bunch of BS... we leave for camp soon and I just wanted answers, not a giant flame war...

I think you'll make an awesome addition to this board Carl,

Have fun & Good Luck!!!

I have been so busy fighting the flame wars to post to this, but I had a GREAT trip! Despite the fact it ended early (for reasons I will not go into).

I was able to hunt with an experienced bear hunter, who does not use calls yet himself, and actually called a bear to our stand... he went on to tell everyone in camp I was a "master caller" for the rest of the day, even though he never got a shot off on the bear. I've actually got the baby bear sound down pretty good with one of my new custom calls...
The biggest thing I learned from him, was that I am not the crashing through the woods greenhorn I fancied myself... he was supprised to hear I just started hunting last year.

It turns out the sound I had recorded on tape was a pirated version of a Johhny Stewart tape, and I did not have authorization to use it.
Not even ol' Mr. C can give me that permission!

On the very first stand of the trip we had a coyote pup come right through the stand before we even started calling... by the time I realized it wasn't a dog, she was gone, it was no more than ten feet from me when it went by, in my ghillie hat and mask it never knew what I was (even though it looked right at me), but it shot about a foot up in the air peddlin' for drive when it seen ol Red's ugly un-masked mug... then throwing itself into the hemlocks, at the back of the roadgrade, Red was perched against.
She went right through so close we had a crossfire situation the whole time! And Red had his bear gun... that woulda made a big mess!

Two more bears responded to calls I made, one (too small) showed within 15 mins of starting to call (with the first open reed call I ever made) and another never came out of the 15 foot deep thickets of berries, but circled around before leaving.

Bofire/Carl and his brother Tom, treated us like part of the family... and the group they assembled was one of the finest and funnest/funniest groups of guys I have ever shared a camp with... I really needed a good laugh or 200!

I always here almost mythical talk of "Elk Camp" and how much commradery there was... but this blew away all description of such events!!!

If these gentlemen ever invite me to anything again, wild horses couldn't keep me from it!!!
I hope when it's all said and done I am half the man either one of these men are, their honor, generousity, and integrity was impressive!

Thanks for asking,

Beargod in training,

Jeff -

Hey hey Beargod, sounds to me like all you need is more time in the woods where the animals are. From what you are saying looks as if the calls are working and the man is working the call right.
Go to it and get your first!!

As far as I know Jerry must be the first to succeed with a KK. Or was someone else first??

Bill,

A.P. Jones of All Preadtor Calls has the honor of being the first... too bad for me he didn't take a camera. And Just like Jerryboy's by the time he would got back there wouldn't of been much to photograph.

While in camp I made many contacts with which to go lookin' for coyotes, and we found some good looking land over there... we actually saw two coyotes cross the road (in two different places) on our way into the area Thursday night... they were the first live coyotes I have seen since I started hunting for them last fall... that was a good omen...

Fall is going to be here soon, I can't wait to just go do it.

Copied and pasted from some of Krusty's above posts.

Krusty said: "The song we have in mind is a recording of one of the custom bear calls Mr. Cronk recently made (I am waiting to hear back if we have permission to hunt over it, it was sent to me so I could attempt to make a call that sounded similar)

Krusty:" But the sound I have, I got from the owner of said Cronk Call...

Krusty:"The young man, up here in Washington, who consigned RC to make him the call is the one who sent it to me.

Rich's talent at coming up with a sound upon request, is what seperates him from the rest of us amateur call makers!"

Krusty later makes a post where he states that he was trying to get permission to use a Johnny Stewart recording. So what is the real truth here?
I have never pretended that any of Johnny Stewart's sounds were mine. Just curious.

OK Rich,

Here's the story... start to finish...

You got a request from a young man here in Washington, to make him a call which can do a convincing bear cub sound...

I followed along as the thread about this call evolved... talking about said call, and how uterly effective that type of a call can be.
Then I get invited to go hunting for bears with some really great guys, who have some experience at it.
I jumped at the chance.

So I write an e-mail to said young man, and asked for a sound sample from his call, so I could try to duplicate that sound.... he eventually sent me a sound back, without ever explaining he did not exactly meet my request.
I assumed I had gotten what I asked for.
And by the time I got the sound bite, I didn't have time to try and make a call that sounded like it... and I truly don't believe I have the skills you do, to be able to "custom match" a sound like the paint guy at the store can a color... I honestly find that ability most impressive.

So I said: "The song we have in mind is a recording of one of the custom bear calls Mr. Cronk recently made..."

Which you then said I could use. I politely and humorously set that aside as a misunderstanding/miscommuncation. No biggie.

I really did get the sound, I now have on tape, from the young man who ordered the call from you... but not the sound I asked for, or thought I recieved.
Apperantly you got the same sample I did, when he requested you make a call that sounded like it.

So I found out just days before leaving for camp that he just recorded the sound from a tape he had and forwarded it to me.
I had real mixed emotions about the karmic implications of hunting over a "pirated version" of any sound (You Mr. Cronk should know this, I have asked for your permission before actually hunting over sounds you have published on the internet, because I feel permission is needed before I use anything that's not mine... tools, guns, motorcycles, etc...), and I wasn't really sure of this sound origins by any stretch of the imagination...
Until Friday morning in bearcamp!

When we got up and got to breakfast Bearmanric had a big box of calls and his e-caller... we started comparing calls, and tapes/MP3 sounds... I mentioned I had a bearcub distress tape, and Rick said he did too... he hits the play button on his e-caller and out comes the very exact same sound I got! I am now horrified, I know where the sound came from, and realize I am a thief (or at least in "possesion of stolen goods") and vowed at that moment to record over the tape...

I woulda smashed it in the campfire, as a sign to the Hunting Gods... but it's a brand new tape.
I did the next best thing I could think of, and threw the whole e-caller in my crate of gear, and left it there all weekend.

I didn't mean to be dishonest about this thread, or the pirate version of a Johnny Stewart tape (which I spent a considerable amout of time cleaning up, removing the "kick the bucket" sound that was looped into it, and making and changing around two other loops to remove some of the monotony of it).

I am sorry if I seemingly mislead anyone, or dragged Mr. Cronk's name through the mud... That was far far from my intentions.

I guess I just let the enthusiasm of the coming hunt get the better of me...
I hope this clears up any confusion, and dispell any spot to Mr. C's honor I might have caused.
