In light of the 'racist' immigration bill that we just passed here in Az. it's interesting to look at what Theodore Roosevelt had to say back in 1907 about immigrants and being an American.
"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt 1907
Bear in mind that he was refering to legal immigrants.........not the 'Law abiding undocumented aliens' (who's first act in this country was to enter illegally)

Great find! I remembered TR saying that in something I read a while back. I was going to try and find it, but hadn't had time.
He summed it up perfectly!

Nothing revolutionary, that's always how I felt about the subject. I'm tired of catering to foreigners that only have one foot in this country but their heart and allegiance is to their home country, and most of them are Mexicans. I'm sure they think we are fools and idiots, all the money and consideration shown them, which they will take like accepting valuables from someone who is touched in the head. And, that's what we are, soft headed. Give them aid, we already do, all kinds of it, and it sure as hell doesn't trickle down to the peons, but when they come here and demonstrate, act like they friggin' own the place, waving their Mexican flags, my pity has run dry. They should be rounded up and put on busses. And, build that friggin' fence! At least the girls can't get over it and they are the one's with the anchor babies.

Fixing the illegal immigration problem is simple. End the Welfare State, and those who don't want to be Americans, will leave on their own accord.

I think that in the future, as our country begins to recover from the damage being done by the current administration, Teddy Roosevelt will be 're-discovered' and recognized as one of the truely great men our country has produced.
His comments are also profound when viewed in the contex of the Muslim community in this country that expects us to honor their Sharia Law.
