I officially started my predator hunting this morning. Had a few hiccups but still had a good time getting out there.

Walked down to call from the edges of a few hay fields of my mom’s neighbor’s . Haven’t been down there in a couple years. I knew the old guy that had owned it for years and he always put up hay on 2 of them and brush hogged the lower 10 or so acres. It was always cut down good enough for a guy to see a long ways. Well, he passed away several years back and his only daughter and her 2 sons own it now…and I learned this morning that there hasn’t been anyone maintaining it, ie, haying in a while. Still some big round bales sitting here and yon in both hay fields.

This morning my plan was to get in there at daylight (which I did) set up my decoy, ie, job my arrow (w turkey feather tied on) in the ground and walk back, plop down in the fence line against a tree and wait a bit and then start calling.

Hiccup #1 started with my decoy. The fishing line that I tied my feather on my arrow was rotten and broke after getting snagged on some brush on the walk in. No extra fishing line with me.
It didn’t matter much because when I got to my spot(s) …

Hiccup #2 was the grass was too tall for my decoy to be visible anyway.

Hiccup #3 was the wind direction in relation to my first planned set up. So had to ditch that spot and head to the next. Got to this spot and no way to see in a sitting position so had to step back into the trees along the fence line and stand.

Stayed on this stand for a while and worked my calls but no luck today. Wile E. 1, Saylor 0.

First time out this season, and I learned a few things.
Side note: my grandpa always said “Some people live and learn and others just live.”

Even though it was already hot and humid here this morning, it was good to get outdoors and sit a spell watching and waiting.
I’ll stick some new fishing line in my bag for next time. My kit bag (chest pack) worked well in carrying a lot of my stuff, calls, etc. It was good to get my camo gear out and try it all out today. Will be better prepared for the next time out hunting.

Started trying to call coyotes in the daytime back early 2000’s. I never hunted them regular like most guys here on the forum and I would still consider myself a beginner at it. I haven’t got out there the past 3-4 years and just starting to have some time to get back.
I’ve killed coyotes, just not the numbers you and others have. As far as weapons used, I usually hunt with a .223 but have also killed ‘em close range with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Nothing wrong with that, considering you probably don't have the coyote populations or the open public land like we do out this way.

But ........... .223 !!!! Gasp [Eek!] [Eek!]
That will never do around this place.
Tell ya what to do.
Take a bit of polish and shine up the pointy part of your bullets. Then .... you can rename them ...... The .223 Saylor Improved. [Cool] Now, THAT has panache !!!!

Plenty of coyotes in Mo. but keep in mind you not only hunter out there. Plenty of guys that run them with dogs as well. They still come to a call just make sure they was'nt chased around same day or 2 that you plan to call.

Thanks for the laugh Koko. And thanks for the insight Tim Anderson. Like I told Leonard here a little while ago, I’m not a total newbie but still consider myself a beginner at it and don’t have big numbers of kills. But that’s why I wanted to join this group after just reading posts over the years…now I’ll be able to share some of my own experiences and get you guys to pass along some advice or tell me what I may be doing wrong. Lots of folks here that I hope to learn more about techniques and anything about predator calling/hunting.
Hope I didn’t give anyone the impression I was some know it all coyote killer. If my story or stories bore ya, just say so.

I imagine a lot of guys only post of their “successful” stands and not about those that don’t go as planned or come up empty. And it’s the internet so who can honestly argue? Me? I’m the guy that’ll give ya the good and the ‘not so good’ days, ie, hunts.

Who's joking ??? With the right marketing, people will buy anything. [Big Grin]

You mentioned a problem with tall grass obstructing line of sight.
Have you considered a ladder ??? A couple of guys I've run into use them regularly. A little expanding foam up & down the frame, some camo, and back it up against something with shade. If you have 'regular stands' you can even leave one on each stand.
Wear a Ghillie and stay still. Sit on the top or just go up a rung or two and use the top as your rifle rest. Grab ladders cheap at swap meets and yard sales.

And .......... speaking of setting up regular stands .....
Pick up a walker at a thrift store (cheap). A little camo netting, a couple of foam pool noodles to rest the .223 Saylor Improved on and a milk crate to sit on and you've got a ready made blind.
There's a couple of them in Ore. that some quail hunter has probably found by now and wondered 'How the HELL did some guy that needed a walker get ... here????' [Big Grin]

I have actually used a ladder when calling at night in the same area I talked about. Better visibility, but again, came up with zilch.

Besides, kinda tough walking 1/2 mile in, toting an 8’ ladder along with your usual gear. Much less moving to another spot another 1/2 mile.

When I used the ladder at my home place, I only walked out 100 yards from the house just as an experiment. Most times I night hunted in my neck of the woods , it was from the back of a pickup bed but that was much easier and much more mobile.

For daytime hunting it helps to locate the coyotes before you start calling them. That means get out at 0dark thirty and do some howling. Otherwise you are cold calling and it's hit or miss. Mostly miss. At least that the way it goes here in my area. If you already have them patterned that's a different story. They like to hang around cow pastures, cut hay fields, chicken houses (the big ones like Tyson), horse barns, etc. Where ever the food is. Hunt behind locked gates where pressure is lower if possible. Everybody and their brother has a Foxpro it seems.

Grass to tall get a Bog-pod with death grip and shoot from standing position. what I use mostly for night calling. at night locate coyotes and call them to you long as you not standing next to the truck and don't have to walk far just get it out of site.

Mmm, well more to the story. When I walked out of the house before daybreak, there was a chorus of howling from the south. Problem was that the neighbor to the east has “guard dog” llamas plus…even if I sat and called…the highway divided me and them.

Ok gents, went out and made a few stands this morning. Was blowing the Deuce (a split reed open reed call made by Mark Andes) on my first stand and saw one coming in from 200+ yards but he hung up. Stopped. The wind wasn’t right where I was at. Blowing from me to him. He bolted about the time I shot and I missed him. I had my Fusion e caller setting out and I tried playing a pup distress but no go…I pretty much educated him. I let things settle down a bit, then got up and walked a ways to another place (borders my friends place) and set up and called for about 30 minutes off and on.
Nothing. Headed on back to the pickup.
