On a 5-2 vote earlier this evening, Commissioners with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism approved an historic change in Kansas hunting to allow coyote callers to hunt with the aid of lights, thermal and infrared in a special season running from January 1 to March 31.
On the heels of a historic record-setting harvest season in 2019-20 when Kansas trappers and hunters documented in excess of 175,000 coyotes killed statewide, combined with the fact that coyote population numbers have tripled in the past decade despite increasing pressure, opposition citing the possibility of overharvesting Kansas coyotes to the point of threatening the species' stability were roundly ignored and rejected.
At this time, only coyotes can be called and taken at night. Speculation was made that raccoons might be considered at a later time due to the fact that the past three years has seen harvest numbers drop by an estimated 45,000 animals (below the ten year average) each year due to fur price reductions and fashion trends, as well as significant increases in damage caused by marauding coons to agricultural property.
Other features of the new regulation include the prohibition of using motor vehicles while hunting, no hunting on department/ walk-in access properties, and the requirement that each sportsman or woman who hunts at night must purchase a special $2.50 permit that enables wildlife officials to track and monitor the popularity of the new opportunity. There are no restrictions on which firearm types can be used.
This has been a great month for me. Spent 4 months ahead of the Aug 4 primary getting one of my best friends elected as our sheriff, and tonight we won this ten year long battle.

For strictly animal control, and numbers, it's hard to beat August or September.

WOW, good news is always a welcomed thing. And a game commision that actually listens to facts instead of emotions is also good news. Now if other states would follow.

LB, the commissioners realized that there would be some benefits for control, but they placed an emphasis on placing it when pelts were prime over control concerns. More and more of our cattle producers are going to September fall calving over spring calving partly to reduce coyote concerns. Also, whitetailed deer influence a lot of things in Kansas hunting. Kansas is a destination state for trophy whitetails and in order to even get a look, we had to take into consideration the concerns about poaching. As much as there is no data to indicate that poaching will be a concern, in order to clear the opposition from the road way, you have to make certain concessions. I seriously doubt we will ever see a year-round night season for coyotes as the deer people will draw their line in the sand long before that ever happens. We consider ourselves lucky to have gotten what we have and the state will be monitoring quite a few different things to collect data about expansions that can be made to the project down the road, i.e.,
high racks.
