So, for whatever reason, I never bothered putting up trail cams. Figured I always enjoyed the 'not knowing' of what might be out there when hunting. All that changed last month when I finally grabbed a cheapo Moultrie and set it up at the farm...

Figured I had a good crossing to cover. One way is an old log road the parallels a creek, which runs next to an alfalfa field. The other lane comes down off the hill and crosses the creek at a wide, shallow spot. That loaction is under pines and always stays cooler than the surrounding woods, so thought that might help for Summertime activity?
Anyhoo, pulled the SD card and felt like a kid on Christmas when viewing all the pics! Got a shit-ton of deer, and a few extra prize pics of coyotes... [Smile]

And another one, from later that morning!

I think it was Rich Higgins who told me that a coyote will visit the location where another one howled from?
Regardless, there's the proof, right there!!!

I don't know in what context that Higgins said that, but it's a statement that would be difficult to argue with, because you sure as hell can't prove it.

Who cares? It seems plausible? But it's much too generalized a statement intended to make the speaker seem very wise. As has been said, many times; when leaving an unproductive stand, a coyote will always show up and sniff the very spot where you were sitting....if you left your trail cam close by. And, there are probably a number of reasons. Especially if you don't consider the time element.

I'm thinking a coyote knows his territory pretty well. What if there is a boundary, will the neighbor coyote still sneak in and sniff around? One time, we camped almost all day in this nice little vale. As our evening hunt time approached, we tossed leftovers in the fire, then put it out, saddled up and proceeded down the road. The road eventually became impassable so an hour later had backtracked and passed our campground. I was on top and flashed the light around and there was a coyote ankle deep in our extinguished campfire, digging for beans and other stuff that might not have been completely burnt beyond recognition.

I think my point is that we are dealing with a curious animal and if he has a mind, he will check out all kinds of human activity and also any strange coyote sound he had heard, if not now, maybe later on? It's such a profound statement because it could easily be true and nobody will ever call you on it, even if you doubt the validity. Because, lacking Fred's trail cam, nobody can prove it either way. But it sounds, as I just said, quite profound!

It also sounds like something that our resident stick and string sage and old fart combo might say. Right koko?

Good hunting. El Bee

I just thought that was a fukkin' cool azz sequence of pics in a short time span. The whole trail cam deal is a fun & new experience! Gonna pop a few more up and see what else can be captured?

It only dawned on me later that the 2nd (daylight) coyote might very well have been surveying that area where it heard a howl earlier? Sure looks like it, as its nose it right where the howlers butt was situated?

Seeing as how I call in the snow a bit, I've seen it over & over where coyote(s) have 'inspected' a dry stand, as evidenced by more recent tracks in fresh snow. So much so, that I'll purposely spend time @ midday to check & see if/who/what decided to stop by after I left. And lotsa times, I'm only using vocals/howling on those stands...

IIRC, Rich Higgins mentioned a study somewhere at a large fenced in location. It was a few years ago already, by my takeaway from the conversation was that a coyote will most definitely investigate the howling of another coyote. Might take 12 seconds, might take 12 hrs. But those coyotes wanna know who's talking, and from where?

Based on his study, Rich seemed convinced that the visit was something to bank on. Made sense to me at the time, but again, I don't remember all the fine print. Just recall that his findings already fit my experiences, so reckon I put the shoe on cuz it fit?

Got a pic of a coyote chasing a coon, too!

I'm pretty familiar with that research facility that Higgins visited in Idaho. There was so much wrong about what that guy was doing that one wouldn't know where to start. In the first place, every single time that they tracked a collared coyote and the coyote became aware of their presence, the coyote would run away, in some cases, for miles. Of course, what would you expect when they were throwing nets on them from helicopters. They wound up with paranoid coyotes and if they investigated the source of a howl, I wouldn't think that proves too much. But, Higgins knew all this "research" was stupid.

I'm a bit miffed, Fred. You have had face to face conversations with my old buddy Rich and multiple visits to Oklahoma and South Dakota and points west, who knows where else, and yet, all I got was a measly phone call a few years ago?

Just kidding. I'm not very important.
LB

edit: but I agree with you, it was a remarkable coincidence, or could prove what Higgins said, either way.

Urine post set.
Call & howl. If the coyote comes in, shoot it.
If not..........
Come back in the morning. [Smile]

Nah.............That would never work.

Not the greatest pic, but here's the coyote/coon...
Least it looks like a coon?

Here's another couple coyotes, same camera...

As for deer, three bucks I had on trail camera hit the dirt, this season. I never saw the wide 8 pt I wanted, so my buck tag went unfilled. That's fine...time to start gettin' after the coyotes!!!

Have a couple buds flying in next month. Been laying off calling & haven't touched any of my shit, since October. Should be GAME ON!!! when they get here. Can't friggin' wait...

I've been putting trail cams out for years, 5 cameras this year and 6 cameras next year. You never know what's out there while you are gone.

In fact, I had a trail camera stolen last year. The best part is, the thief didn't see the other camera that took his picture stealing the other camera. No problems with a confession and conviction. It cost the thief over $1100 for the theft and trespassing convictions.

The picture below shows the gate to my camp with a daytime visitor.

The thief ignored 6 private property signs and still didn't think that he was wrong. I don't know what these idiots are thinking today. He can count his blessings that it only cost him money. To top it off, he was also charged with drug possession when he was arrested.
