DiYi and I went for a 1 1/2 day trip. we live 150 miles apart and we don't get to hunt together but maybe 4-5 times a year. we met yesterday at daybreak and gave er hell till dark and from sunup today till about noon.
we seen about 35 coyotes but they were VERY reluctent coming in.
most refused.
the area had a recent rain last week that put a 1/4 inch crust of ice on the snow and with calm condidtions, it was tough to get into spots with them busting us. even from 1/2 mile away.
we were both shooting the 17-204's and had some long shots but they worked as good as can be.
1 shot,1 kill.
shot disatnces were 352,316,314,220,120 and the fox was about 125.

Got to say something here.Bear and I are running low on Nagel 30 grainers and I've been hoarding mine and a bit skeptical about the Berger 25s we bought.Years ago I had so-so performance only on coyotes with 25 gr Hornadys out of a straight 17 Rem.
After this trip,seeing Bear 'stone' them over 300 yds with those 25 bergers I'm no longer worried at all.What a difference a bullet and 2-300 fps makes.

Dang,forgot one thing.Maybe he stoned them at those distances cause in his efforts to squeeze out a lil more accuracy he seated his bullets deeper. [Razz]

Worked great.Nothing a wire,cleaning rod,hot water in the motel and a couple hours swearing and cleaning didn't cure. [Big Grin]

Dan. that fox is pehaps the nicest i've seen in years. correction on Dicks post. i seated the bullets out a bit,not deeper. got a bullet stuck in the bore. dumped powder into the action. a real mess.
yes, lesson learned. a hunting rifle need not have the bullets touching the lands [Roll Eyes]

I lived in Minnesota many years so seating bullets 'deeper' means into the lands.Thought you guys would know that.And,by the way,coyotes there have different noses as well but then there they eat Lutefisk so that explains the nose thing.

I understood right away, having done it.

I will say this: reliability is paramount to accuracy in a hunting rig. Therefore, if you ever have to unchamber a round for any reason, completely forget about "touching the lands". Especially with spherical powder! It's amazing how strong powder can be wedged into trigger moving parts. At night, for instance. On foot, miles from a tool, brush or cleaning rod to tap the damn bullet out of the bore.

The good news is, you only have to learn the lesson once.

well shit!!, i was thinking of a name for the new build and "Democrat" fits well........ it's never wrong (as in , can't miss).
now i must hit the bench and bump the bullets for the Democrat down a tish. [Wink]

surly don't need round #3 with the mess it causes.

Dave, how fast are you running the 25's? I haven't ran 25's in my 17/204, but I had a few "poof" on me when pushed über fast in the .17 Rem.
Just wondered how fast they'd hold together in a fresh barrel.
Are the golds still available or are they on the endangered list too?

i have some Remington 25's that won't make the target, but the Berger 25's have been fantastic so far.
i was a (lot) consere
ned about running out of Nagel 30's and was saving them only for my savage. this new build (mod 7 rem) was going to be for the Bergers as i have a good stock of them and so far, ZERO complaints.

just got done taking the fur off the stretchers.
that fox, well lets just say i think there is a chance he could be a "top-lotter".
i spent a good 1/2 hour making sure there is not 1 spot of blood,burrs and he is a good-un. [Smile]

we only have reds way up north on the Navajo res.
too far to go and a special lic. from the res. may never take one. on another note we have grays all over the damn place.

Yeah, the Navajo Res is the only place I have seen red fox, except for Canada. I sure as hell didn't know I needed a special license? There aren't that many anyway. Can't say about the Hopi? They say, you can't bring a gun into the Hopi, or else? I asked the clerk where I bought the Navajo lic. about how they handle Hopi's and he giggles and said they charge them non-resident prices. Apparently, there is some rivalry going on there?

i grew up hunting reds. was common back in the mid 80's-early 90's to see 20-40 a day.
i don't think i've shot a 1000 but bet i'm close.
