i had a new 17-204 built this summer and just recently got around to playing with it. its a model 7 Rem with a Lilja barrel. shoots very well with 25 Bergers. as of today, i've shot 16 shots at game and have not missed yet. now i ai'nt claiming to be the best shot in the world but this rifle just has "it". the fox on the right was #16. the other fox was called in on the river and shotgunned. just about had another red but just as i was getting set up, he dove down a den. he'll have to wait for another day.

It looks like it's pretty easy on the fur too. Have you had any blow outs?

Let me know if you use that load on any coyotes. I've run out of Hammett 25 grainers to load and am looking for the next best thing. I'm only a straight .17 rem out of an AR and had really good luck with the Hammetts. Since the CG forum is gone, I'm looking for info on what is the next best thing. Most of the time I use 55g Vmax out of my 22-250, but the mange is kind of letting up here and may use the .17 after this cold snap as the mangey ones will be thinned out. Thanks in advance. JBM

tundra. so far, the 25 Bergers have been excellent on fur. i've only shot 5-6 with it and so fa,so good. they also work very well on coyotes. i'm not sure on velocity but guessing 42-4300. jbmartin. just in case you don't know, .17 cal bullets (good ones) are about impossable to find right now. Berger quit making the jackets for them and since most custom bullet makers used them, they are shit-outta-luck. Berger did agree to make a special run and i got in a group buy. .not sure if its 2 late but check over at Sabier.com and find the thread on it. you may get lucky if you HURRY. good luck.
edited too add:. if you can find a forum that Tim A has'nt been banned from, send him a p.m. he's got a stockpile and (may) help you out. don't count on it though ![[Wink]](wink.gif) [ December 21, 2013, 05:00 AM: Message edited by: the bearhunter ]

I built my 17-204 just to shoot 30gr bullets and luckily I still have enough left to toast a couple barrels. I really like that cartridge, and I have killed some neat animals with it.
In the 25gr arena, I still use them for the 17 Rem and smaller cartridges. I have had the best accuracy with Berger Match but use the 25gr Hornady HP's mostly since they work very well on coyotes and I generally shoot them around 100 yards or so.
I know there are some here where the 17's don't fill the bill for them, but for a sport caller like me, who only kills a handfull each year, it is a fun cartridge.
Unfortunately, I get very few fox and don't have much to go on there. Interesting seeing the results your getting with it. I have shot some cats with the 17's but I think fox are smaller and more fragile. I kinda think the 17 HHornet may work on them quite well. [ December 21, 2013, 06:28 AM: Message edited by: DanS ]

Thanks for the reply BH. Talked to Hammett and got the skinny on the jackets. He still has all the machines to make bullets if he could get them. Was hoping since Berger had the jackets that they would start to fill back in to the market with their own bullets. Being a .17 and all I guess it would be a "should we make .17's today" or "should we make what sells the most today (everything else)" If a guy had to choose between the Hornady 25g hp's or 25 vmaxs would you have an opinion on them? i would NOT shoot a coyote with a .17 vmax. too much respect for them. jbmartin. did you find that thread on Saubiers?? not kidding here. if you need bullets in the future, find that thread....
Smithers. i see anyone chasing a critter with a sled, they will get turned in pronto!!
edited too add: got one fox/1 coyote today. just when i open my mouth about how good the 25 work, i zipper open both. low hits face on. the fox was about 200 and the coyote was, well, in the next time zone . seriously, he was laying on the low side of a snow drift and i only got to about 500ish??. he sat up and stared while i got set up. i held way high and sent one. he started flipping around ,ran a few yards and tipped over. hit was low in the chest and zipped him open bad. just got done skinnin/fleshing. now for the sewing. I looked around over there and didn't see what you were referencing. If they have a new thread there about what is current, please put the link here and I will look. I kinda figured the vmaxes wouldn't be the deal. The guy that I got the Hammetts from a long time ago told me to get with Berger and tell them I wanted "hard" bullets for the .17 but since they aren't making them, oh well. Just looking for something the will even come close. JBM

I'm not registered on that site. If it's like many sites, you can't PM someone until you post X number of posts. If somebody here is ordering some of those .17 caliber bullets, I'd gladly send you the money to get me 500 or so of them in the 25 grain. I'm shooting up my last 200 or so of the old 22 grain Walker's, so those 25 grainers are probably the best or closest I'm going to find that's comparable. If somebody here is ordering, just email me and I can send you the money anyway that's easiest for you

Thanks for the info on this bearhunter. I'm out on paying that much. Near as I can tell, they had to make 100,000 jackets for this order. Don't know who will end up with the overrun, but will wait and see if Hammett or some of the other custom makers get them. Thank again. JBM

This is where they got started on the order. I guess you could read it two ways. One, they are charging for the jackets and not making them for the order. Two they are going to run 100k jackets and someone will end up with them. This was posted back on 11/6 when they started putting the order together. I still think I will wait and see. Thanks again! Hi Bryant,
I apologize for the delay in response, I had to check with production for pricing and availability. They indicated to me that right now due to the market conditions and the massive amounts of backorders that it would be near impossible to schedule a custom run of bullets anytime soon. He indicated that to add this onto his schedule we would have to place you behind all existing backorders for designs we have, which would delay the production of this run for at least several months if not past a year. In order to produce these, we would have to order specially sized copper and lead as well, so we would require payment when the order is placed.
Since we require a minimum jacket run of 100,000, and 10,000 jackets would be used towards the bullets, this is a rough estimate:
10,000 Custom Bullets: $2900 +90,000 Custom Jackets: $8000 +shipping (roughly 128 lbs shipping from ZIP 92707) +sales taxes if shipping within CA (8.75%) Estimated Total: $10,900 + shipping and taxes
If you are still interested even with the delay on production, we can work up an exact cost with shipping and taxes included.
Thank you,

Ran into the local Sportsman's today getting a couple Christmas presents for people. Happened to check what little bit of bullet stock they had and low and behold they had a few boxes of the Berger 25grainers for $50 per 200. Not the cheapest, but they should last me quite awhile.

Wook. my guess is they are the "varmint" type. berger is still making them. its the "match/target type that are the fur bullet. the varmint kind are terrible for saving fur.
