got a trapping tag this year. spent the last 4 weeks buying wolf trapping gear and getting things prepped.
season started on the Nov 30 but i headed up a day early for a scouting mission. conditions were about perfect when i got there. very light snow and roads were in great shape but that changed in a MAJOR way. deep snow came and the temps dropped down to -29. had to pull 1/2 my line as there would be no way to get to some of it.
beat the crap out of my truck and myself but got it done yesterday morning.
got this smaller female out of a pack of 6-7.
i was hoping i would not get a black as they seem to be of a lesser fur quality but the way the weather/conditions were, i'm just glad to be done.
got a few coyotes and fox to help pay for gas.
had a coyote in a trap and the wolves found it before i got there and there was nothing left but fur.
also seen where 4 wolves pulled a small bear out of its den and killed and ate it. was a heck of a scene(blood-bath).

A dead wolf is a good wolf. Love seeing them in photos like this. Congrats on successfully taking one out. Now come on over to Montana and fill up the back of your pick up with them.

Way to go Dave, thanks for the story and photos. That's interesting about the bear kill, can't say I've seen that one before.
Do you live in that area you're trapping, or up at a cabin? Do you plug in your truck at night, or just let it idle all night long? I'm just curious how you deal with the temps. I plug in, or carry the Honda Generator and plug it in if I'm off the grid. Last year I just let the truck run straight for 5 days solid, only shutting it off to put some fuel in it at a pump.

not sure what the $ market is but this one will just get tanned for the wall. i was hoping for a big silver but ended up with this odd colored one. not uncommon around here.
due to the cost of wolf specific traps, i oppted to just go with Duke brand #4's. i did some mods to them like better chain,swivels and base plates. i also ran some snares and did have a wolf in one but he chewed out.
had wolves at sets 5 different times and missed the pans by inches. i believe i should have had the traps bedded a bit farther back and offset to the sides a bit more. lesson learned for next time.
trapline was about 130 miles a day.
i tried quite a few different lures but have no real evidence than 1 preformed better than another. used coyote urine on most sets also. was a fun run but brutal conditions. them Alaskan trappers must be some tough sonsabithches.
Dick. that pic was taken after a 1 mile walk on snowshoes to check a trap. -45 with winchill. had to many clothes on and the steam was pouring out of me. just for that comment, i will refrain from building that 6' sled we talked about. i'll just leave you for the buzzards!!!the gotta eat too..same as worms ![[Wink]](wink.gif)
TW. stayed at a buddies place while up there.
hot shower felt damn good after those cold days.
