Spent a week in Phoenix, Scottsdale, area. Wedding and time with my son. Did some golfing, baseball game etc.

While on the golf courses, early morning, I was amazed at all the wildlife. Rabbits, lizards, Roadrunners, gophers, quail, snakes, coyotes, food stealing ravens, crows, blackbirds of some kind, doves, etc. There wasn't a hole you played that you did not see some sort of wildlife.

I am sure the availability of water etc had a lot to do with it. Green grass, shade in 110 degree heat.

Traveling on the highways etc it sure looked like a different type of calling etc. I doubt you all see the coming from a mile or more away stuff like we see here.

Looked like a back your butt in a bush and get ready type of deal.

We did make it out one evening and do a little howling right around our resort, we found coyotes at every spot we stopped at. A much higher tone of howling than I was used to hearing.

Some fields of corn nearby I would assume these coyotes go to for shade??

Anyhow it was very interesting and very hot in the city on all the cement etc. not nearly so bad once out of it. I liked the extended forecast on the local weather channel, 108 for a high and 84 for the low just about every day with sunshine. Same forecast different day

Being blonde and blue eyed I was the minority. Not to mention fair skinned!!

Randy,
That pretty much sums up my first trip to the Scottsdale area too. I had no idea of the amount of wildlife there until I visited.
What really struck me was all the quail running through the neighborhoods!

When I was out there we saw rattlesnakes, Bighorn sheep, bats, and bobcat.

I was calling in the desert one night with my wife. We had a bunch of coyotes howling. Then we heard another animal noise, which you could tell was coming closer in the dark. Mrs. 49 asked if this was a coyote also. I gotta give her credit for being aware. I didn't know what it was so I thought it would be a good time to get her out of there.

On my recent trip to New Mexico we saw some mountain goat (or possibly a female sheep), elk, turkey, and we had road runners cross the highway in front of us. My buddy, a fellow hunter, didn't want to believe they were road runners.

I was surprised the goats / sheep hung around in the area they were setting off explosives demonstrations. They must be used to it?

49er;
In the towns of Clifton / Morenci here in Az. one can often see Big Horn Sheep on the hillsides or on the road. We just take it for granted, like some of the towns in Col. that have elk in the City Parks.
Right now, the prolonged drought that we're having is really hurting a lot of animal populations. Nothing like it was 25 years ago. Too bad that our POS President won't build a pipeline to pump some of that mid-west floodwater out here to our empty reservoirs.

Edit 2 add; If you want a real treat, come back in about another month when the thunder clouds are putting on a lightening storm. They can be pretty awesome.

Koko I wish I could come back. Maybe someday.

Right now the little 49'ers have to got to college, so that's where my money will be going.

You have a beautiful state. I am still hoping to retire out your way.

I live in Tucson, and I have video taped bobcats and coyotes run through my side yard...

And I'm in the freaking middle of town!

Water from lawn sprinklers.
Food from pet food & pets, plus rabbits & songbirds.
Cover from landscaping, freeway right-of-ways & dry washes.
And did I mention No Hunting or Trapping???

Scot could probably tell us more about urbane versus rural versus wilderness animal populations but I would be surprised if predator population densities aren't the highest inside of most city limits.
So long as a predator maintains a somewhat low profile, it's livin' the good life in town. The average city slicker can't tell a bobcat from a house cat or a coyote from a half grown German Shepard. (And these are the same voters that took away my trapping rights.) [Mad]

I spend one year in Lake Havasu City April 1999 To April 2000. Working for Layne on a collector Well. It would produce 40 million gallons per day.
There truly is a lot of wild life in Havasu we were partying our ass off any way.
The fishing is good down that way and the boating is good as well.
I saw a lot of gray fox or at least kit fox driving back and forth. It's a two hour drive from my neck of the woods. They have it all as far as wild life go's. Big horn sheep coyotes lions and so on. Can't say I saw coyotes down there. But I know there are coyotes east of there.
And most of the folks down that way are from Cali and seam like good people though.
I was down there for a base ball game a few weeks ago and it was hot as hell even at 7:00 PM over all it's a nice town. Good hard working folks.

And one more thing I was on a job in Arizona Hi way 68 from Bullhead City to Golden Valley in an area that's holds a lot of Arizona's Big Horn Sheep. It was a job that involved a lot of blasting and the big horn sheep never did seam to roam to much. Not so sure sheep are all that smart just see very well and stay to the high ground. I saw a lot of dead rattle snakes on that job no live ones. I thank God for that I spent a lot of early mornings out there picking up pre warning signs and siting them up. There are lions in that area for sure.

Jim, it was a family thing thru out, would have luved to spend some time with some of you Az. guys but I did not want to take away a minute from time with my son or wives family.

If any of you ever need a hunting partner down there I have a son who would luv to go. I know he misses it. He's a good kid and can help ya with your golf swing, it is his profession. He kicked my ass.

Sure had a lot of haze, smog like stuff hangin in the air??

Never thought there would be any amount of row crops like there was.

JW, Golden Valley must have been wide open and back then. The back county is still wide open and wild.In not even sure a person can even drive up Secret Pass any more. Bulkhead is not even as wide open as it was back in the day. Fort Mohave,Mohave Valley,Topock are still all the same and Needles. Needles must be the arm pit of the world huh so who cares any ways right. It,its hot as hell right now but the stripers are biting good.

I will say the Talking Stick Resort we stayed at for the last part of our stay in Az. was very nice.

The host hotel, Renisance sp? by the football stadium and hockey arena was very nice also with an area filled up with great bars and places to eat kept this redneck entertained.

Could see a Cabelas from the hotel. Wife had an outlet mall to shop in. Very relaxing.

I would have been happier with much less and huntin the coyotes with my son, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

You ever heard the saying, if momma aint happy nobodys happy!!

It was very nice and I am lucky to have the means to do it every once and awhile.

Randy, if you were doing your howling out by Talking Stick, you're probably fortunate you didn't get into a jam. That's all reservation east of the 101 out there and they don't take kindly to palefaces recreating on their land, unless it's inside the hotel or casino. I fantasize about calling out there every time I drive by. Coyote paradise and I bet they've never heard a call.

I'd be surprised if Higgins has not called there? Nistetter, too. Oh, and how about that gold dome place just north of 101?

Good hunting. El Bee

Jim we were inside the resort complex, a lot of signs etc telling you to stay the hell out.

I do think they liked us in the hotel and casino, especially my wife, although she did do very well in the casino.

It looked like a great place, a honeyhole for sure.

My son works at a course called The Foothills, coyotes all over that course also.

Something different for sure and it seems these 80's and 90's here are nothing anymore!!

80's and 90's would constitute a cold snap. It's been just plain miserable here for the last week or so. The afternoon thunderstorms are starting to pick up, so hopefully, the 118 temps will drop off. Of course, the humidity will make up the difference. It ain't for everybody, that's for sure.

When I was a kid, Ahwatukee, was just desert on the south side of the mountains. Now it's an exclusive community to some. To me, it's still just desert.

Haven't played golf in 10 or more years but had my two and only hole in ones at the 'Foothills'
Lived nearby in 'allwhitetukee' the worlds largest cul du sac. Absolutely no hunting and no end to coyotes ,bobcats , rattle snakes and rocks.
Always felt a little on edge there , one way in one way out.

Jim,
My father-in-law, who lives in Carefree (I think, he used to live in Scottsdale and I haven't been to his newer place), finally threw out his psycho girlfriend. Her and my wife have been at war for years so we haven't been there in a long time.
Anyway, now that she's gone, I foresee an Arizona trip in the near future. When the time comes, I'd sure like to hook up for a hunt!
That bitch was absolutely certifiable! My wife smiled for a week when she got the news. I couldn't stand her either.
On a very long list of the crazy crap that woman did, this is one example and the one that sealed her fate with me...
I was on a 3 day motorcycle trip, and she had one of her girlfriends call my wife and pretend that she was some chick I'd met on the trip and that I "hadn't told her I was married", and that "we were supposed to meet up that night".
Why? No other reason but to just be hateful.
I really felt sorry for my wife! Imagine yourself in that predicament. Your wife's gone on a 3 day trip and some guy calls and tells you that crap! That one was unforgivable for me.
