March 1983, 500 miles into the Baja peninsula around Laguna Manuela. Surf fishing for white sea bass we caught large 30 and 40 pounders. We were camped out on the beach, relaxed and living the good life in some of the most remote country that you can find in the Americas.

The area is composed mostly of dirt, sand hills, sagebrush and rock. At the time, only a handful of old time surf fishermen knew about this place. Having been a fisherman for more than 50 years and having guided countless fishing excursions, I have knowledge of the pacific coast that most can only envy.

Anyway, my partner and I were having our camp ravaged by a pack of coyotes. Seemed like they were stealing everything they could get their jaws around. Even some of my shirts and pants were found ripped to shreds. Why they wanted my socks was beyond me as they'll knock even a buzzard off a shit wagon.

Obviously, we had a problem with these pesky critters. How were we to rid ourselves of these unscrupulous bastards? We didn’t have any guns, traps, snares or poison so what could we do? Ah ha? I got an Idea! Why don't we try fishing for em'? Just so happened I had my shark fishing outfit with me.

I took a 9-0 hook filed off the barb (making it coyote friendly) and tied it on to my 40LB test with a foot of 100LB steel leader. Stuck a whole bunch of fish guts on it and laid it out about 50 Yds from camp. I slipped the clicker on my Penn 4-0 on and laid down to go to sleep knowing that the bandits would come for a nighttime visit. Sure enough, just before daybreak I was awoken by the sound of my clicker singing.

That's when all hell broke loose in our secluded little fish camp! Imagine standing with a Penn 4-0 in hand fighting a crazy, enraged, growling coyote. This coyote was kicking up sand, dirt, and rocks, jumping over bushes and through sagebrush, flipping in the air and biting at everything in his way. This was better than any 200LB yellowfin tuna!

After about a 1/2 hour or so the coyote was gettin' a little tired and I had him pretty close to the back of my truck which was parked next to camp. My partner was standing next to me and leaned over to ask, "Do we gaff him or maybe net him"? Hell! I don't know? How the hell do you land a snarling, vicious coyote? Really, there was only one thing left to do. Cut him loose.

I do believe in catch and release you know! Interesting thing about this is that after this we never did have problems with them again. This technique is not recommended if you are fishing for coyotes in bear, lion or bobcat country - for obvious reasons!

Happy Trails!!
