I did alot of pre-season scoutting when out after ducks and located as many den tree's or possable den tree's as I could and also checked out some of the other den tree's that produced in the past to see if they were active...
I got all my gear ready Fri. night and loaded up into the truck for Sat.s coon openner for a rifle I had along my Magnum research 22-mag. and a rem. Model 550-1 semi-auto for just incase..
I like to set up in front of the den hole or just off to one side so I brought along my gillie suite for camo cover to blend in..
Caller of choice was my WT and sounds used was anything from Vole mouse to rabbit to bird along with coon vocals and distress sounds..
I started most stands with a prey distress sounds and then switched over to coon vocals or distress to finish off a stand if needed.. I also spent a little more time on most of the stands as I found out from previous hunts that some of the coons just take a little longer to get going.. Once in awhile I would get a peaker that would take a look and then pop back in the hole not giveing me a decent shot so I would tease them with a little vole mouse distress or some sort of bird to get them excited and out of the hole...
Some stands were slow going with one coon comeing out of the hole at a time and then another stand they were fighting to get out of the hole and get to the sound source..
Most were shot comeing down the tree before they hit the ground and just a couple made it to the ground before meeting there maker..
I was useing Win. 22-mag H.P. ammo for the hunt and had some poor results with it so I may give CCI or Rem ammo a try on the next hunt and hopefully one or the other does a better job of killing clean...
The rifle worked well and the speed loaders came in real handy when I had to do a quick reload on some of the multiples or cripples...
Anyway it was a good day and I'm glad I was able to get out and enjoy some of the nice fall weather which I usually miss due to the work load..
I was going to have my son come along on the hunt but he had an appointment with the local Pheasants fore-ever chapter.. They put a hunt on every years for the kids to get them more interested in hunting and a chance to get some shooting in at some birds.. They also have a little work shop they put on and the kids learn to make wood duck houses and are shown how to clean or dress out varis game animals..
Dakota came home with one pheasant and said he missed a shit-load but also said he had a good time hunting with his friends ...

Well maybe he has figured out that coon behave much like coyotes. You can get away with calling aggressive with some but not all. Or he is in the process of a big reply and we will just have to wait till he is done..LOL ![[Wink]](wink.gif)

That's pretty cool, Tim! Man, I hope ya saved a couple for that pretty red dog to tree???
Posted by TA17Rem (Member # 794) on October 22, 2012, 07:46 AM:
Plenty of coon around Fred but Copper won't be treeing any of them.. Copper will have her turn come late Nov. when the deer season is over here and I can get after the coyotes..
My area is'nt much different than other places when it comes to deer. The land owners don't want anyone running through there property till after deer season but it so happens I'm related to a few of them and they allow me to call on there properties for coon and coyotes..
Normaly I don't call or hunt/trap many places till after deer season but by that time the coon here are not as active as they are now .. I have one more week-end to get after them and then I have to let the areas cool off so the deer settle back down for the Nov. deer openner...

Nice!!!!
Question(s);
Are they prime this early or is the leather still blue??
and
You ever eat 'coon?? As in par-boiled then B-B-Qed??? Not bad at all!!!!
Posted by TA17Rem (Member # 794) on October 22, 2012, 08:54 AM:
Koko our season here starts when a animal (furbearer)starts to become prime. Some of the early ones will show some blue when hide is stretched and dried and some won't. The fur is still good but not at its best so you may get a lower grade with some.. You can take two coon from the same tree and neither one may be the same as far as being prime goes.
Next week-end our season for beaver will open as they prime up a little later than the coon or fox..
Another example is our wolf season which consists of two seasons a early and a late..
The early season is for the dam deer hunters have to keep them happy by letting them get there revenge..LOL The fur on these wolves won't be the greatest but its more about killing than it is harvesting the fur..
The late season is for the trapper and hunter that is after the hide to either sell or have mounted or rugged out as the fur will be at its best....
As for eating coon, nope never tried any and don't plan to.. I leave that for the southerners..LOL
I'm not a vet or doctor so I can't say for sure which one is good enough to eat and which is not so I'm not takeing any chances...

Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on October 22, 2012, 05:56 PM:
Okay, okay! That's an acquired taste, don't you think?
I was mildly surprised a couple years ago, when Randy Reeves served some bobcat. I thought it was quite good. I think it was tenderloin or backstrap?
On the other hand, the rattlesnake seemed much too bony, for me? like those very small bones you see in blue gill that will lodge in the back of your throat.

No long rely here. Success is success. I've used the non-fighting sounds and they come in, but slowly, almost cat-like. About as passive as I go is a duplexed coon chatters/ woodpecker sound that gets their curiosity going. Fact is, with fur prices where they've been on coons, by the time ours are fully primed, distemper has hammered them each of the past four years. Last year, all I found at most of my best den tres were carcasses at the bottom where they landed when they crawled out and died.

Hey...............I've got a caller that looks somewhat sort-of like that. A Sony WalkMan, & misc. Radio Shack parts in a project box. Sounds like crap even to my tone deaf ears but the heck of it is that it has called in quite a handfull of critters.
Posted by TA17Rem (Member # 794) on October 28, 2012, 10:53 AM:
Is'nt that little green box something though (WT Mighty Atom for those that don't know)....
I called two counties this mourning and put on a little over 140 miles round trip. Got a few more heavey weights that ran from 30-35 pounds..
I switched ammo in the 22-mag and went to the CCI 40 gr. h.p. and saw an improvement on kills right off the get go then later in the mourning the performance started to drop and some of the coon required a finishing shot.. This bullet maybe openning up to soon as I was getting some big entrance wounds on a few..
The weather was cool with a dirty sky and I think this maybe the best time to be out calling them but don't know for sure yet till I get a few more hunts in..
That green box( WT ) is really doing the job for me so I think I'll hang onto it for a few more years..

Anytime Leonard..
Yes I wish other places had alot of the little devils as well..
The thing with the coons here is we only have a few hound hunters and some trappers and a large area that they live in.. Pretty adaptable creatures that can live most anywhere and not be bothered to much...
Been finding out that alot of farmers don't want them around, even the farmers that don't like hunters much, as the coon make a mess of there equipement and can contaminate there livestock feed or stored grains.. So I have been getting access to areas that would be normaly off limits..
Another thing to keep in mind is we may have alot of coon and some places have very little but they may have a good number of gray or red fox or coyotes by the thousands of which I would be very satisfied with if we had them....

tim. are you just cold calling or setting up on sign..abandon houses, cornfield, cattails ect..??
and to LB. you got coons alright!!
Posted by Leonard (Member # 2) on November 04, 2012, 05:40 PM:
I didn't say we don't have them, I said I hardly ever see them. I hardly ever see bear, either. I think the reason is because where I hunt, we don't have a lot of trees or water. I can count on one hand the number of coons I have called in, over the years.
Good hunting. El Bee
Posted by TA17Rem (Member # 794) on November 04, 2012, 07:45 PM:
LOL. Bear...
Too bad Leonard don't have a season for them. Wonder what they would cut off to show proof for a contest hunt?????
I don't do too much cold calling. I look for trails in the ditches, farm groves or abandon groves as well as along creeks or one river that I have close by.. After awhile you can pic. out most of the den tree's pretty easey.
Oh! And to clear up a misconception from what I read over at F-P webb site about calling coons or where to look...
Some member there claimed that coon make there dens in only dead tree's which is false, atleast in my area..
You will find den holes or hollow tree's that are still alive and growing which can be cottonwood, Oak, boxelder, and ash to name just a few.
Here is a pic. of a tree with a den, the hole is just underneath where a branch broke off.

Also down along creeks if there are not any tree's big enough to have a den the coon will dig a hole up along the bank and the tree's roots or just dig a hole into a bank..
Not every tree or hole is going to produce a coon everytime but keep calling them anyway as some coon will have more than one den.
Example: I have a place that has an abandon grove on both sides of a north and south road with a drainage ditch just to the south of both groves. A coon or coons in this area depending on how much sign well have a den in both groves and a hole or culvert down by the drainage ditch..
Once the coon is fatten up it will move away from the ditch and into one or both of the groves and spend most of the colder month's there..
As most good trapppers will tell you, you hit the creeks first for coon then move your traps to the wood lots later into the season. Same canbe said for calling.
If you have big enough tree's for dens along the small creeks then the coon will be there pretty much through the season till mateing starts. I find these coon to be a little easier to call.. Just like calling coyotes or fox its a numbers game and the more places you have to call will increase your percentages and it don't hurt to go back and call areas you have called before that you had kills on..
I have a few good spots that have produced three Sat.s in a row and I took anywhere from 2-4 coon each time..
Also if you find a den and call a coon in do some looking around as there maybe other dens close by in tree's or on the ground as the families tend to stick together.
Also if you have a good spot and call in and kill a few YOY coon you better come back and hit it again as mom and pop are still around..
The boar coon willbe a little farther away from the kids and from what I have seen so far they tend to hang about 2oo-300 yds away and the sow is less than a 100 yds. from where I have taken the YOY..( if there are enough tree's around for a den)
Enough for now...

TRnCO right now is one of the best times to be after coon here before the big freeze hits, that and I have a little time on my hands till the snows hit and I can get after the coyotes and fox then when the fur is prime... Makeing decent money on the hides plus there are plenty around.. I'm happy... ![[Big Grin]](biggrin.gif)

Tim the other day you mentioned changing ammo (22mag). I hunt with a CZ 452 22mag around my house, I mostly use the old Federal Premium 30 gr. Sierra HP. It is very violent on fur and hell on smaller, less than 30 lb varmits. A while back i ruined a bobcats day by basically splitting it wide open with a chest shot.
So i changed ammo to Win 22 mag FMJ flat point, (X22M). If you arent happy with the CCI's you might try them. They do mushoom pretty well and aren't too violent on fur.
Posted by TA17Rem (Member # 794) on November 08, 2012, 08:45 PM:
Thanks for the advice P-P. I switched to some Rem 40 gr. h.p. and used them on the last batch of coon and I had fewer runners after doing so..
I looked at the Win. ammo I had and noticed the h.p. appears to be punched in and very shallow and the cci and rem. seem to be the same which was nice and deep. Any way I'm going to try the Rem. one more time and if I start to get more cripples then I'll give the solids a try..
And for anyone interested here is another den...
Posted by Prune Picker (Member # 4107) on November 08, 2012, 09:42 PM:
Just a few mins ago i shot a med size skunk going away from me. At about 40 yds the 30 gr Fed Prem split that stinking bastard from the base of the tail to about the shoulders. I don't think a chainsaw could have done more damage.

I was going to hang up coon calling for now and get started on some coyote trapping and calling but the weather has been so dam nice here I really hate to pass up a good time to be out after the coon. So I decided to go after them again this mourning and hit a few new spots and some old spots that produced in the past..
I managed to get five coon and lost two cripples that escaped back into a hole in a creek bank.. The temp.s have been in the mid 30's to mid. 40's with a low humidity which is crazey for this time of year here in MN.
I took the five coon I got today out to a local fur buyer and had them added to my grade sheet and noticed I had turned in 8 jumbo's so far and have 6 more in the freezer at home I plan to take up north to another fur buyer I normaly deal with...
Prices have been running anywhere from 5.00 up to 12.00 for coon in the carcass and little more if I skin them.. I know I can get a better price up north but I don't have much room for keeping hides till I have time to make a trip up there so I guess I canbe happy with what I got so far..
Might be looking for another rifle in a few weeks or maybe a bigger freezer..

one jumbo, a large and a few reg.

Nice tail-gate of coons. Those suckers sure are fun to call! Been shooting a few big boars myself. Sounds about right on the price for around here. You might get $18 for the biggest of coons, but these VA coons ain't worth much. Still fun to shoot though and they pay for your gas money.

Thanks Jason.. We have some good numbers this year so it does make it that much more fun to do..
What do your coon run for as far as weight goes???
Posted by jasonpredhunter (Member # 3843) on December 10, 2012, 01:45 PM:
Tim, BIG coons down here usually weigh in the 20-23 lb. range. I'd say a good average coon is mid-upper teens. I actually called a big boar in last week that was probably the biggest I've ever seen. Weighed him and he was 27.2 lbs but I've never seen one even close to that big before here. Our numbers are pretty good here this year it seems, I've heard a lot of guys in the midwest with low numbers. I'm sure the drought has had some sort of impact on them.
Posted by TA17Rem (Member # 794) on December 10, 2012, 05:25 PM:
Well we got some snow here and cold temp.s so I'm done for now with the coon and ended up with 50 coon with 20 some of them being jumbo's which ranged in weight from 32-38.5 pounds..
I finally settled on what ammo I will use in the 22-mag from now on which will be Rem. 40 gr. h.p.....
