went out on saturday to give it a try. made 2 sets with no takers. 3rd set looked promising. found fresh tracks in the new snow crossing the road and heading into a far off cattail bottom. my buddy was doing the calling and i was downwind about 150 yards. about 5 minutes in i see one coming directally at me but trying to get downwind of the caller. i took the shot at about 80 yards straight on. he never even twitched this was a decent sized male. we than splt up as i was gonna head for home and taking back roads, i again seen fresh tracks crossing and heading into another cattail bottom. i follewed the tracks untill i was confidant as to where he was layed up and set out the foxpro on a knob and i went to another 50 yards away. this big old dude came screaming in on the ice and was pogo-sticking his way in trying to see over the cattails. it was fun to see. he stopped braodside at about 30 yards and thats when i whacked him. same thing, never twitched. man do i love this 17-204!!. not sure what he weighed, but he was BIG! and has an extreamly heavy/thick pelt. he barely made the stretcher.

Please, do we have to call a stand, a "set"? That's right up there with "yote". A set is something that trappers do.

Just kidding, you have earned the right to call it whatever you like. <ugg> [Roll Eyes]

Good hunting. L Bee

I agree with El Bee that a `set` is something that trappers make, but why do we refer to an attempt to call predators a `stand`, when we rarely actually stand?? Shouldn't it be called a `sit` or a `kneel`?? Maybe even a `lay` if hunting the short-grass or a `perch` if on a ladder?? I'm confused & my meds are all mixed up, too.

BTW; Nice 'coyote'. Now, stay where you are and a man in a uniform that you don't recognize will be along directly to chat with you about the percentage of protected wolf DNA that coyote carried. [Big Grin]

Pure speculation, on my part, but: I'd say the old buffalo hunters made stands and that's the origin of the word applied to calling present day predators.

Good hunting. LB

What up fellas!

I always "called" the spot I decided to "call" from a "call". Like, "I 'called' there the other day", or "Lets make a 'call' here". Of course that was before I found the www, or became politically correct. I have had several people over the years "call" me out for that being different, but I will stick with it as it is what I have always referred to it as.

Its a "call" to me boys!

Take care,

Todd

Hey Todd;
How's about this.................

When we hunt your spots, it's a call.

When we hunt my spots, call is what we do on the stand.

And when we trap, we make sets. [Big Grin]

I made a `squat` on my last calling trip and now NOTHING comes in downwind of that patch of bushes. [Eek!]

It's really not for innovative descriptive terms, fellas. A "stand" is what it is, and those that insist otherwise, will be laughed at behind their back. A prone? A call? "Set" is bad enough, but making up your own name for what is, and has always been called a "stand" is kinda.....you know? You KNOW what I'm saying? It just ain't right, I know that much.

Good hunting. LB
