Thought some of you guys and gals might find it interesting to see Yote Yoda's first "Coyote". He killed this rascal back in 1988, way before he talked me into giving the game a try. He was so excited that he couldn't wait to get a full body mount done by a taxidermist he knew, so off he went. Turns out it was a coydog, and a beauty at that. He has put many coyotes down since those early days and is surely a hard and proficient hunter now. I killed my first coydog on the same farm that Yoda killed this one.

That one is part dog, Really? I thought it had the same smile as my fiends Malamute after getting a dog treat.

Leonard, this particular coydog really resembles the one I killed on the same farm several years later. I am reasonably sure the daddy was a typical farm shepherd, judging by the markings. A guy on the adjoining farm had such a male shepherd. You are too used to looking at those little old desert coyotes to appreciate how unique this rascal was. Typical coyote in a lot of ways but you can see the dog there too. I thought the taxidermist did a reasonably good job. One man's funny looking is another man's pride and joy. Yoda was real happy when he killed him, and it pleased him to have him mounted.

This coyote holds a special place in my heart and I thought it to be worthy to have it mounted..
This coyote was spotted running into the long grass (CRP) to bed up for the day..
It was my turn to put the stalk on so we gave it some time to get comfortable..
I walked into the section about midway along a fence line running east to west and walked till I picked up a set of tracks go north into the grass... I took my time as I went scanning ahead for any sign of a bedded coyote or one up and on the move.. I was a little over half way through the long grass and one of the guys called on the radio and asked if I'm still on a track, I said yes I am. Then he replyed I don't think the coyote is in there as they could see into the grass pretty good from there location and also could see me and he said I don't have very far to go before I run out of grass..
I told him I would stay on the track and see where it goes or comes out of the section at...
I kept my eyes forward and scanning ahead and looking down from time to time to watch where i put my foot down. At the time we had some snow on the ground but it was melting fast and there where little grassy spots I could step on and make very little noise as I went..
I came apon a small depression in the ground roughly 40 yds. by 100 yards and spotted the coyote curled up around 30 yds out on the top left side of the depression.. I picked it up in the scope to be sure and then dropped to one knee and took the shot..
I don't know of too many people that have gotten this close to a coyote and kill it before it was up and running when stalking them so I thought it was worthy enough to have it mounted...
I also have a Red fox in a simular pose that I also thought was worthy enough to be mounted as well, but thats another story...

I stalked a mousing coyote to about 30 yards once. I was bow hunting and he got behind a tree so I made my move to close 10 more yards. he never came out from behind that tree.

One time, we were laid up in the heat of the day down on the res. I strung up a hammock and I had my little 6MM leaning against the tree next to me. I woke up at some point and I saw a dog coyote piss on a bush about 30 feet away, then he turned and scratched and moved out of sight, but I could tell he was still there. So, I swung out of the bed and cranked down the X ring and did a couple lip smacks. As expected, he turned and looked right at me and took an 85 grain Spitzer right in the chest....which scared the hell out of the other two people with me. Now, obviously, this coyote was marking his territory and knew the location of everybody in camp. That's how coyote's act when they don't think they are the focus of attention, which I have seen on many many occasions.
