In the news this week Mn. DNR said they will be takeing over control of the wolves in the state and also will not renew Wildlife services contract at the end of Dec... The DNR also has a draft on the table to put a hunting and trapping season on the wolves..... It sounds like the DNR is going to keep the core area of the wolves off limits but will loosen restrictions for those that need to protect livestock and dogs, ect.

Who wants a tag????

Last i heard the DNR head honcho said when they get control of the wolves there will be no season for at least 5 years to get a grip on the population and see how they want to handle it. Dumping the WS contract and letting them run rampid for five years? this should be interesting.

Did Mn. dump the WS contract or did WS loose the funding.

Looking at Mn. money problems I would guess it's a budget crunching deal if any cost share program is involved.

How many is to many? I thought this mentality had played out already out west?

Yeah from what I read they want to get something in place as far as hunting and trapping goes with in the nest year or so.. They said they have to work out a few details...

Randy. At the end of Dec. when Mn. DNR takes over fed. funding will stop comeing in and the MN. DNR says they have no plans to keep them on..
Any problems or complaints will be handled by local trappers that do work for the DNR...

As for how many I don't remember the exact number, could of been 2000 and anything over is surplus..
One of the deals is they want to protect the core area of the wolves and just trim around the edges but also loosen up the protection laws for when a land owner has to protect himself and his livestock/ pets....
I'll check around and see if I can find the info on the delisting of wolves here..

Here is a update of what the DNR has planned for the wolf.

At the moument they are planning a draw for a lic. rather than selling them over the counter but this could change due to the pressure the Mn. deer hunters ass. is putting on the state. They want to see a large reduction in the number of wolves right away..
The DNR also wants to run the season dates from late Nov. and into Jan. when the fur is at its best and the hunts willbe mostly on agg. land or areas with livestock....
The state needs to keep the number of wolves above 1,600 or they can or will go back on the protection list and the state does not want to see that happen..
The wolf too, will have a say.. No matter how many the state allows to be killed, the quota will be hard to meet because the wolf is difficult to hunt or trap..
Montana has about 550 wolves and nearly 20,000 lic. have been sold to res. ($19.00) and non-res. ($350.00). Looks like non-res are paying the bills again..LOL
Only half of the 220 wolf quota have been killed so far so Montana may exstend there season...

Anyway we have a season comeing, some may like it some may not.. Allmost all of the info posted above came from the StarTribune...

my guess is MN will try for 50+ $ for a tag.
went ice fishing yesterday for the first time this year. seen fresh wolf tracks in the snow. snuck into a remote swamp and tried calling them in with the bright moon.. no takers. also found where a pair with 4-5 young took down a deer. this is in farm country [Mad]
