Had the day off, so despite 30 mph winds, I needed a dead coyote for some photo support to go with an upcoming piece, so off to the woods I go. Well, not the woods, I guess.
Anyway, the first place I call is a big fat zero. Oh well. Going to the second place, I spy a big ol' dog coyote running across a hay meadow toward the shelter belt I was headed to, so I kept on driving to another place to let the coyote get comfy for a later get together. At the back up place, I called a beautifully bald mangy dog in and had to woof it to a stop about fifteen yards from me and three steps from eating my Ultimate One. Ar went boom. Dead coyote, but not very photogenic.
Went back to the place with the shelter belt and made a long walk in from the south side, set up looking west down the length of this big half-mile long shelterbelt and fired up the caller. I thought I could hear something messing around in the leaves behind me but didn't want to chance the move to look, and about ten minutes in, I look to my right (downwind) and a coyote is scooching his way to the north. Had to shoot through standing weeds, but the AR did the job and blew a big assed hole through his back at about 70 yards. #2 down, and I got my pic with him.
Had a dr's appointment to hit and got back out after noon to high winds. Made five stands and the last two produced. On #4 stand, calling over corn stubble, a nice pale coyote came in hard from the left. I woofed him to a stop at about 40 yards and he stood on his hindlegs to get a better look at me and the caller. I shot at him with my 22-250 and hit a corn stalk. He took off and I made an 80 yard shot going away through corn stalks and somehow still managed to blow his pelvis apart. BOOM! THWACK!!!
Headed down the road to my last stop of the day in a drainage below one of my beef men who asked for us to hunt his place and about ten minutes in, a coyote appeared just shy of dead downwind, running to circle. he hit my stank at about 90 yards and stopped to check up. Had him in the AR's scope when he craned his neck "just enough" and BOOM! WHACK!!! again. Shot him right through the throat. Left a mark. Four seen, four killed. Having fun.

I do have to admit, shooting these machine guns at coyotes is kinda a blast. I have hit them from 15 yards to nearly 90 and haven't had one spin or drag itself off yet.

Tom,
Kind of an interesting way that the problem was solved.
While I was relating the tale to you guys, I was working behind the scenes through my own connections within the gun community. I was somewhat hobbled in what I could do at first because Remington/ Bushmaster/Freedom Arms are paid advertisers with T&PC and FW Publications. I didn't want to overstep myself and end up having them demand that my arrogant butt be summarily discharged as a writer for any of the magazines I appear in or they would cancel their advertising. Wouldn't happen? Believe me, it has, and to me on one occasion. Fortunately, my editor at the time went to bat for me and the situation was resolved peacefully.
Anyway, after explaining the dilemma that I could do nothing and not cause waves for anyone (especially me) and be out a thousand bucks, or raise some hell after consulting with my bosses and hope I could get something worked out to my bosses, they told me what I could say in my defense and told me they had my back.
As you recall, I'd sent the rifle back and they retorqued the barrel nut. Didn't help. So, I sent it back a second time because the rail on top of the upper was loose where it dovetailed to the upper when the set screw hole stripped out, yada, yada, yada. Long story less long, they put it on the repair schedule and when I went to check on it, I was told that they were on a parts hold for a new barrel, and didn't know when it would come in.
When we came to the six month anniversary of my owning the rifle, I was pissed. With my editor's blessings, as well as the blessings of the good guys at our sister magazine, Gun Digest, I contacted Bushmaster, advised them that they'd had an opportunity to get free exposure to the 50,000 readers I appear before each month but that their handling of my gun problems was completely unacceptable. I had several people along the way state that if BM knew anything, or knew me, they should have simply grabbed the best damned gun they sell and shipped it to me as soon as they had mine in their hands and hoped that doing so with a short apology for all the problems they'd caused would keep me from ripping them to every reader I have. They didn't. Instead, I advised them that 6 months, 5 of which the gun was in their possession and not mine, was too long and that they had 72 hours to either send me a new rifle, send me mine, repaired and with a new one year warranty on everything, or the money I'd paid for the first one. They sent me a check.
Granted, the lower on the AR I did buy is a DPMS, but it's working fine aside from a short-stroking issue that will likely be fixed with a good cleaning tonight.
All's well that end well, I guess. But, I will admit that the carbon experiment was a resounding failure. LOL

Sorry to hear of your failed experiment with the Bushy, at least you got your check back.

Turns out it was a loose set screw in the gas block. Fixed!

Lance I'm glad they gave you your money back and you bought something better, well except for the dpms lower... grin
The carbon 15's have been an interesting idea from the beginning but have also been plagued with problems.
I took my mucheen gun out this morning with 55gr Barnes TSX's to kill a deer but no joy. I'll get back out next weekend maybe and try again. We have one more week to endure after that, then I'm ready to start calling!
