Never ran into anything like it. My first thought was snake bite.
I guess age to be 2-3 years old.
Swollen skin that curled around toes was toughened and almost like a foot pad.
Hair on enlargened leg was much longer and as thick as regular legs.
It was limping along, stopped and met up with a 223.

Gotta wonder how that happens? A genetic thing or injury?

I have drawed down on a few coyotes over the years that stopped suddenly and began biting at their front pad, leading me to believe they caught a cactus spine at one time or another. I have snagged cactus here and there and they become infected pretty quickly, if you can't extract all of it. But, my belief is that coyotes avoid a cholla forest because they don't like stepping on cactus any more than we do.

And, HEY!

Guess what? My first local sighting this year, not fifteen minutes ago driving home. Three blocks from here, corner of fifteenth and San Antonio, full grown coyote, on cat patrol.

Yuck, that had to be uncomfortable. Funny you should get a coyote like that in NM this week. I saw over that PM that Barry (Rockinbbar) killed a club legged looking coyote this week in NM as well. Maybe there is something to all those alien sightings and probes down there in NM. [Wink]

Ursus... Same coyote. I took the pics.
Also took photo of a white camel and goofy-horned Oryx while I was there.

shot a bear a few years ago that had a bad front foot. he actually walked on the top of his foot on that side. can't remember a growth like that but the hair on his pads was 2-3 inches long
